Compact Camera for skiing??
I'm looking at replacing my Ixus 40, however I can't seem to find anything on the market that has most of the following? I have an EOS 30D but like to have a compact for taking skiing, mountain biking etc, hence the need for an optical viewfinder and large zoom!
Does anyone know of anything in the works? The G9/10/11 look like they will do the trick but I think they maybe too bulky to get into a skiing jacket pocket inc a cover/bag for a little bit of protection. Must haves: 1) optical viewfinder or LCD that shows the 'live' picture in burst mode, ie so I can track a fast moving object in continous shooting mode 2) At least 2fps 3) decent zoom (up to 200mm equivalent at least) and ideally a wideangle of at least 28mm equivalent 4) optical zooming while filming 5) image stabilisation Nice to have: HD video |

It's a VERY rugged camera though - should fit in a ski jacket pocket and I'm not sure you'd need an extra cover. Mine was dropped from standing height by an aunt onto a stone fireplace and it didn't even chip the paint. The other big plus of the G series is that you can configure lots of settings without resorting to menus. Something that would be handy in ski gloves! |

Thanks, the G9 actually appears slightly smaller with a larger zoom, also just seen the product announcement about the Nikon S8000, need to find out if the LCD stays 'live' whilst tracking a fast moving subject...

G10 certainly isn't 2fps - its not even 1 sometimes!
Very bulky too - but echoing Woz - great for gloves and ruggedness. I'd go for something like* this; Panasonic Lumix FT1 *I have no experience of this camera however - but the ruggedness, HD video, 4.7x zoom, wide angle, seems to match most of your wants.
