Splice [Vincenzo Natali 2009] - Adrien Brody & Sarah Polley raise hybrid.
Saw some exclusive footage from Vincenzo Natali's forthcoming alien-esque horror/sci-fi Splice, and very nice it looks too. Adrien Brody & Sarah Polley star as two scientists who raise their own hybrid lifeform (spliced from human and animal DNA), to serious consequences.
Being a fan of Natali's Cube, I've been keeping an eye on this - and the footage shown has seriously piqued my interest, the FX work on the hybrid is quite impressive. Presented by Guillermo Del Toro, and starring two brilliant leads in Polley & Brody, this looks like it could be a winner! Check out the Species/Alien-nodding poster below! ![]() Stills from the film available here Last edited by Ratfink; 05-11-2009 at 21:19. |

First I've heard of this. Looks promising. I loved Cube (not so much the terrible sequels) and Cypher, and Brody is on pretty good form recently.
Also, Sarah Polley definitely needs to be in more things.

Saw it at the Sci-Fi Film fest a few months back and it's definitely worth seeing whenever it arrives on general release.
Oh, and there are in fact boobs, but it's nothing like Species. |

This film was funnier than expected. The whole cinema was laughing at the bloodiest and twistiest moments. Not really primarily a horror movie, but sort of a dark comedy about parenthood and amoral science. I liked that, unlike in say Species or Alien, it's not like the resulting monster is purely destructive. Potentially dangerous, yes, but also tender and childlike.
Although the plots are only very broadly similar, the themes are probably closest to Frankenstein.

Has this a proper UK release date? I can only find the festival dates that it has appeared at for the UK.

Well it appears to have just been classified by the BBFC today as a 15 with an expected release of 23rd July.

Watched it earlier, Started off great but goes down hill fast in the last 30 minutes when it becomes predicable. Reminded me of an episode of X Files.

I think the limited release is more due to the fact that all the cinema screen are taken up with Inception, Toy Story 3 and Twilight. There's just not room for a small film like this in most cinemas.
Shame really because this could find an audience. The showing I saw in Cardiff on a friday night had pretty decent numbers. |
