Sounds like DNS issues with Sky - try changing the DNS servers in your router setup?

Its not DNS I have looked on the skyuser forum and someone there is having the same thing and he has tried a whole host of DNS servers. Anyone tried speaking to sky?

I'm using OpenDNS so I wouldn't have thought that was the cause of the problem. It seems from reading around a few other people on Sky have having problems accessing certain other sites as well, sites such as Yahoo, Face Book and eBay

Out of curiosity Alan, have you installed the Vista SP1 RC1? And are you using the sky router?

Hmmm this is curious I have changed my router settings. I still have the DNS settings in but I have changed my IP settings to detect rather than inputting my own and everything "seems" ok...it cant be that though...right?

I'm having problems even accessing the bbc news site now.

All I get is a blank page with "connecting to newsimg.bbc.co.uk..." in the status bar!

I had a similar kind of problem when I first got Sky broadband, where my web speeds were slowing down and on particular sites no images appearing/site taking forever to load.. after searching around I found the skyuser forum where some others were experiencing it too, and turned out to be due to the number of errors over the connection building up and up until they were nearly 100% but not going back down until the router was reset.

From that site I found 2 very useful tools (surprised if they're not already posted here):

This utility for changing some basic settings (can also use it to get your sky username/pass to use a different router): http://dg834gt.mognuts.com/NetgearRouterUtility.html

And this utility which forces a resynce when your error rate gets too high, so you don't have to manually reset/disconnect:
http://www.delweddau.com/scripts/stability.html

You can use the first one to download your router stats, so particularly next time you get slowdowns take a look and see if the errors are going crazy. If it seems to be the problem, then download the second utility which'll improve your routers stability (note this utility is only temporary so if you turn off the router you need to download the utility onto the router again).

I've been using the stability utility since September and it has improved my connection considerably as when errors start to build up it'll take care of the problem automatically.

I just emailed them to complain a couple of times[listing all the stuff I had already done to try to correct it] and magically they sorted it. I reckon they just turn up the juice or something..

That is what I was seeing yesterday evening when the site would not load. The only sites I know that I can't load now are Ancestry and Argos.

Looks like it is an OpenDNS issue....

Couldn't get bbc news to load at all, it just hung with "connecting to newsimg.bbc.co.uk..."

Removed the OpenDNS settings from the router, and can now access the beeb site once again! What the hell are OpenDNS up to? Their status page says everything's ok.

Alan b - that Ancestry site loads fine without OpenDNS.

Edit: Just been to http://www.opendns.com/support/cache/

And refreshed their entries for stats.bbc.co.uk and newsimg.bbc.co.uk

So far so good - working for now at least.

quick question - does anyone else on sky get a highish number of errors on their line? got my stats from the router and it seemed like a lot of errors in the short time i'd been connected - and I have the router syncing slower than usual, if it syncs faster the error rate goes through the roof. Does it seen like theres a fault on my line somewhere or am i just going to get these errors cuz i'm far from the exchange?

Well I signed up to Sky broadband as I can't afford to keep paying Nildram nearly £29 a month for internet access.

Anyway the router turned up toay and it's not a Netgear one they ship anymore it's a Sky branded Sagem router but no model number is shown on it. Anyone know anything about this router???

Thinking of joining up to Sky Broadband but need to check a technical detail.
Apparently I need a spare Ethernet port, but can't see this on my pc's user manual, the only thing I can see is a "network adapter connector" are these the same thing? If not, is there any way around this?
Cheers.

Ethernet port looks like - these

"network adapter connector" could very well be it, but if not you can buy a slot in card for less than a tenner which will do the job.
