Terry Bozzio - Drummers thread
Saw him do a drum clinic at the Sage in Gateshead. Now I have seen many great drummers, but this was something else, I kept thinking 'thats impossible' and rubbing my eyes. If you listened to this on an album, you could be forgiven for thinking it had been overdubbed a few times or maybe there was four drummers.
This wasn't some overblown drum solo, complete with all the usual guff, this guy created music with drums, something I was unprepared for and which was very inspirational. Amazing would be an understatement. Unsuprisingly, he has replaced Slayers drummer Dave Lombardo for the Fantomas tour..............he sight read the entire drumming score on stage.................!!!!!!!! If you have heard the Fantomas then you know what I am on about. I'm not really keen on drum solo work, but this was very fresh and worth a shot if you like percussion players............makes your eyes water TBH. |

Bozzio is a great drummer, but little heard of for most people.
His learning ground was with Frank Zappa, who's band he joined when 24. The first LP he appeared on was 1975's Bongo Fury, also featuring Captain Beefheart (school time FZ friend). He stayed with Zappa's band for a few years. Zappa wrote the drum solo The Black Page as a challenge for Bozzio (available on mp3 from here ). Bozzio would sight read somethings and play others from memory. On some songs he became lead vocalist, combining sight reading and playing the drum part with theatrical vocals. In the 80s he moved onto the US pop Group Missing Persons with then wife Dale and ex Zappa bassist Patrick O'Hearn and ex Zappa guitarist Warren Cuccurullo. When they fell apart in 1984, Andy Taylor of Duran Duran poached the rhythm section for his solo album. Cuccurullo responded by contacting Duran Duran and asking them if he could replace Andy Taylor. At that point they didn't know Taylor was leaving but Warren joined the band until the recent original lineup reformed. I'm struggling to accept that Bozzio will be 55 this December. Very classy drummer. ![]() Check out www.terrybozzio.com

Hi Andy,
Knowing you are a Zappa fan, I thought you might drop into this thread. That must have been a real career highlight playing on the same bill as one of your musical heroes. Congratulations, what many of us would love to acheive. Not wishing to sidetrack the thread, but how are things going for the IQ tour? I would love to go and see the band again (its probably been 20 years). The Aschaffenburg gig (3.5 hours away) is the closest to me, I'm still debating whether I can make it. Back at school a friend and I were great IQ fans circa Tales From The Lush Attic and The Wake. I saw them whenever they came to Bristol, he saw them in Bristol and at festivals and whenever he could. At the time he became pretty good friends with Pete Nicholls, and I was with him at a packed Genesis gig in the mid 80's, at what could be described the fans ultimate dream - we where heading for food or a drink after the support band through the crowd, Pete spots my friend Dave and calls out to him by name. They chat for a while, and then we walk away, my friend with a huge grin on his face. My best to you and the rest of the band for the tour.

Boogerman
It's not completely off topic, here is the link... Terry Bozzio played drums in UK with Eddie Jobson and John Wetton. John Wetton's band used to be half of IQ (John Jowitt and Martin Orford with Thomas Lang on drums who was also on the bill at this years drumfest) When I played with Terry I did a signing session for Tama drums and they brought in Bill Bruford (?!?!?!?) to do the signing with me!!!! So that was two heroes for the price of one! Go on, go to the Aschaffenburg gig... |
