Anyone have a definitive list of Hong Kong Legends & Premier Asia titles?

EDITED 5th March ---- Anyone got an up to date list or a link to a good HKL website? Their official site is now closed it seems.

Was looking for a definitive list of all the current Hong Kong Legend and Premier Asia titles available. The official site is a mess for those of us that just want a quick browse of the current back catalogue.

I know most of these have been around for ages and [for various reasons] it seems that nowadays the novelty of HKL seems to have worn off but I for one have only just started getting into them again due to how cheaply they can be picked up

Cheers to Grimmy for the list.....

Not to go too far off topic but can anyone remind me the reasons why Prodigal Son was a disapointment? I've got the HK release which is non-anamorphic and I seem to remember people saying that the picture quality was even better than the HKL one or something.

I think the reason was that the HKL version was cropped but I am not positive on that one

Fist of North Star and Drive for instance are just great Medusa titles and so are Playboy for that matter

Looks like a lot on the HKL list.

Stopped buying HKL's a while back but, having recently picked up Bullet In The Head: Platinum and Duel To The Death, my interest in these excellent releases has been greatly restored!

Looks like there's approx 30 of em I haven't seen. Also noticed that HKL are doing some nice little collection boxsets - for example just picked up the Swordplay Collection (Swordsman, Moon Warriors, Dragon Gate Inn) cheap 2nd hand, very nice indeed.

Weird that they were the bees knees for Asian martial arts DVD releases, with each new title being eagerly snapped up on release day. I know that other companies are also putting out great titles in proper formats & many extras, but the fire seems have died with them.

I assume he's talking about the likes of Fortune Star who are releasing and re-releasing good quality anamorphic transfers and licensing them out internationally. Their releases along with the likes of Eastern Eye, Tartan getting their act together (sometimes), and a couple of mainstream distributors putting effort into their world cinema releases makes HKL seem a little ordinary these days. They're no longer the market leaders and in some respects have fallen behind the competition.

Here's the DVD Times review. No cropping, anamorphic transfer, but some print damage.

Admittedly I'm no expert on Hong Kong cinema on dvd but "HKL seem a little ordinary these days" seems a bit harsh considering the back catalogue of SE's listed above (most costing £7.49 new!).

I'm off to check out these other releases to compare. Again I welcome any specific recommendations of non-HKL titles as now I'm very intrigued!

There's definately cropping as seen here. The HKL print also appears to be slightly squashed again and the non-anamorphic HK dvd certain looks better in these screen grabs.

Yeah for £7.49 you can't complain too much and if this was the standard retail price I doubt that many people would. But many of these releases contain highly irritating niggles for collectors which people would put up with 3 years ago when there was no alternatives but there's no reason too any more. Despite claiming to be a peoples distributor HKL have more recently shown the opposite by ignoring emails and requests by their supporters instead choosing to neglect the hard core fans and appeal to the mainstream audience. This is made evident by the release of Internationally edited movies on their Premier Asian line and up until recently the complete drop of old school classics from the release schedule.

At the end of the day though they are primarily a business, if the old classics arent making the money for them, as disappointing as it may be for the fans, its perfectly understandable why they would drop them. I get the impression that most of their business seems to come from the casual buyer who catches a few adverts on tv or picks up a dvd of theirs in HMV so maybe the old school classics just dont sell.

Whilst I don't buy as many HKL's as I used to they are still a bloody good company who have done a lot for HK films in the UK. They may not be perfect but there recent releases such as Millionaires Express have been damn good.

Love the classics much more than the 'new' HKL films. Though usually passable (popcorn, no-brainer) entertainment (Purple Storm, etc) I draw the line at crap like Avenging Fist - God that was awful! No wonder there wasn't a Bey Logan commentary

Then again I can't say I've ever bought a HKL in store/full price, generally pick em up for a fiver (or less!) on trading forums or Fleabay, which isn't good business for HKL I guess.

HKL ran out of Bruce lee movies to release from then on it was all downhill

Those screenshots of prodigal son over at dvdbeaver doesn't make the cropping look too bad but I've seen screenshots where the cropping makes a huge difference.

This one?

It's not so much the cropping I find annoying (although it still is annoying) but rather the squished transfer. I had a real problem with that on their PS1 release.
