Inside Deep Throat

I see this documentary has been passed uncut even though it includes scenes of Linda Lovelace performing her title trick. Produced by Ron Howard as well. So much for his family friendly image.

I'll be watching this then, just for the fascinating look into Linda's life and how she was used by the anti-pornography brigade and then cast off when she was no longer of any use to them. That's what I'm telling everyone anyway.

I wouldn't be too surprised by the Howard family. Old Clint has been in a few nasty horror flicks iirc and even Father Howard can be seen in the recent Toolbox Murders remake. It would seem that it is Ron who is the black sheep of the family. Until now that is.

Not only that, but Deep Throat has also been passed with an R18 cinema certificate (a la The Good Old Naughty Days). I wonder where it will be shown...

That's a good question - the Other Cinema on Rupert St was legally licensed as a cinema club to show R18s when The Good Old Naughty Days came out (I still have the membership card) but it's closed now. Also, Tartan were the distributor of the film and the owner of the cinema in that case.

My guess is either the NFT or the ICA, though you don't normally need a BBFC certificate to show a film there anyway - just local council permission. Both are clubs with membership that you can normally buy on the day of your visit - I suspect they'll be stricter about that if they show Deep Throat or any other R18 film.

Yeah, I still have my R18 membership card from The Other Cinema too.

I would guess that Momentum would release Deep Throat at the same time as Inside Deep Throat (which is obviously out soon, given that I saw the trailer before Mean Creek on Saturday), but the question of where is tricky one. My guess would be the ICA too (there's nowt in the June programme for the NFT). I'll keep my eyes peeled...

As an aside, does anyone know where else in the UK aside The Other Cinema The Good Old Naughty Days was shown?

I think it was going to be shown in Edinburgh but there were some complaints beforehand - I don't know if that showing went ahead.

There would be nothing to stop any council changing the certificate from R18 to an ordinary 18, but as far as I know that didn't happen.

I understand it contains just one scene of Linda Lovelace doing her speciality. A short one at that.

If anyones interested the R18 uncut version of Deep Throat has just been re-released.

Saw it today. An interesting doc, but it certainly didn't make me want to go out and see Deep Throat...

Deep Throat was shown on Friday at the Everyman, Hampstead (converted to a R18 club cinema for the occasion). According to an article in Saturday's Guardian, the cinema was at a quarter capacity (43 out of 160 seats). Clearly this still-notorious film is no longer of much interest...or has everyone bought the DVD?

Apparently there's only one cinema print in circulation, which will make selected appearances around the country.

saw Inside Deep Throat today at the Cameo who are also showing the original film itself on Friday and Saturday night... thought the documentary was pretty good really and was quite surprised by how graphic some of the clips were given that it was only rated 18. probably won't bother seeing Deep Throat but at the same time i would be intrigued to see how much of an audience they get!

The following motion has been lodged at the Scottish Parliament by a Green Party MSP:

S2M-2964 Shiona Baird (North East Scotland) (Green) : Inside Deep Throat— That the Parliament deplores the decision by the City of Edinburgh Council to allow the screening at the Cameo Cinema of Inside Deep Throat, a documentary about the notorious 1972 pornographic film in which the late Linda Marchiano later claimed she was forced to perform against her will; considers that the documentary of a film, which is widely held to have no cultural or artistic merit, is no more than an attempt to legitimise pornography and condone the abuse and degradation of women, and believes that, in failing to address the issue of Ms Marchiano’s lack of consent, this documentary serves to undermine the role of women in society and runs contrary to the Parliament’s and Scottish local authorities’ clearly stated commitment to equality for women and the elimination of all forms of abuse against women.

Supported by: Mr Brian Adam, Mark Ballard, Rosemary Byrne, Rosie Kane, Cathy Peattie, Ms Sandra White

England beware. This is what happens when you elect Green parliamentarians. I bet neither she nor any of the MSPs supporting it have actually seen the film.
