Paramount release Region Locked Blu Ray

Just read that "CSI: Season One" has been tested, and confirmed as Region A only.

**** - I hope this isn't the start of a new trend.

If it is, I hope multi-region BD players drop in price asap!

Maybe becuase its not Paramount in other countries, maybe a TV rights thing more than a film thing. Guess we will have to wait and see. Odd thats for sure.

I'm holding off buying a new Blu-Ray player in the hope that multi-region players start to become available. You can already get a Panasonic deck which plays both Regions A and B, it could be the first of many.

It looks like CBS control the content and Paramount are merely distributing it, as with Trek: TOS. But unlike the region-free TOS, the rights to CSI outside North America are scattered about all over the place.

So I'd say that CBS insisted on region coding the North American release to 'protect' the myriad foreign distributors.

That still seems like a weak excuse. It would be understandable if it was a recent season of CSI... but Season 1 aired back in 2000. Even Kazakhstan must have seen that by now.

Multiregion Bluray players have been about for over a year although up until late last year they were very pricy and could only be sourced from outside the UK.

I got mine from Multiregion Magic before Xmas for £269.
There is a dvd retailer that is now selling them too but instead of cheaper discontinued models they appear to be offering current models so they are £450 and £550 each - not a very consumer friendly price.

MR still do the BD35 for £329

They play Regions A,B and C aswell as all dvd regions too

This release is highly desirable though as it's the first time Season 1 has been presented in widescreen.

Perhaps, but they're essentially the same company.

What can you buy in Region B that you can't in Region A? I can't think of many things.

Sure, but it should be obvious by now that CBS have their own agenda to follow.

Isn't it more a case of what can you get in Region A that you can't get in Region B? For example: -

http://www.axelmusic.com/productDetails/786936787115

unless you settle for the Region 1 DVD.

An uncut Kill Bill vol 1 will most likely be another one. The same with many other uncut/special editions/etc. If people don't need multi-region bluray, why have we all been buying multi-region DVD for years?

UPDATE - Oh, and avoiding Entertainment in Video releases is another extreme reason!!

Skipping EIV releases is not extreme at all - it's very sensible and I've always done it for dvd and will continue on Bluray .
The US Austin Powers set is a good example of New Line v EIV ( or will be if they ever release it)

After 12 years of dvd EIV still fail to mention extra features in their dvd magazine ads
