Square Grin screen burn - Plasma ???

Folks, in next 10 weeks I will be buying either an LCD or plasma (42 -46inch) - but with plasma Im worried about screen burn for logos (ie*Sky and channel 5). My mates have exprienced this with their plasmas...mind you tehy are all cheaper models. I was looking at a few 1080p £1000 plus models....just wondered if they still suffer from it ???

Screen burn-in is supposed to be nearly impossible in modern plasmas, outside of ridiculous abuse, but image retention is certainly possible, and I've seen it a few times on my Panasonic PZ80, mostly related to gaming and things like HUDs. It can be "washed" away by watching anything else (like TV) for a few seconds, though.

Never had retention from something like a Sky logo, though, at least nothing I could discern.

Modern plasmas are much more resistant to this problem than the old ones, by using newer materials in the elements and also things like motion-adaption where the image is moved by a few pixels (which the human eye does not notice). However it is my personal view that I would not use a plasma screen as a PC display or for a game console, because there is the potential for images with bright, static elements to be displayed for many hours. I know this view is not shared by other posters!

However, things like TV channel logos and idents should not cause any issues. Many of them are semi-transparent now anyway, which further lowers the potential risk.

I think it extremely unlikely that you will ever have any problems.

I watched the England-Ukraine game on ITV HD last week. The scoreboard has yet to completely disappear from my screen. It's retention rather than burn, but it's still something that occurs after just a few minutes on my Pio 6G panel.

(I mentioned the HD part because with an SD signal I can shift the picture around to push the scoreboard off-screen, but not so with HD. So I get a far better picture with HD, but also a lot more trouble with image retention. Harumph.)

Do the Pioneers not have a "wash" option in the menu like the Samsungs do?

Had my Hitachi 42" plasma for 3 years togther with my 360. Depsite 100s of hours of gaming (driving games, fps and RPGs) I have never suffered image retention of any kind.

It helps to do research on settings for the TV as the manufacturers defaults are usually pretty bad and can contribute to image retention.

No issues on my Planny 46PZ80, as swanny says though I have adjusted the contrast and brightness down during the first 200 hours of watching and will probably keep them there as the picture looks good like that. As it arrived the contrast and brightness were too high for my eyes and would help contribute to image retention (as already mentioned screen burn on the latest plasmas is pretty much non-existent)

My 2 year old LG has occasional image reteniton from freeview teletext or PS3 if left on for a while but this goes in a few seconds of other use.

Its not a concern in my day to day usage.

The cost of the PS3 is an outrage - its far too low. I would willingly sell my house and all my possessions to help fund Sony and buy more of its wonderful products.

Not only is there no 'wash' function, but Pioneer even took the screen orbiter off of the 6G sets. IMO the latter should be a mandatory option (albeit user controlled) on plasmas.

I love my plasma but I've got to be so flippin' careful with what I watch. Ten minutes of Sky Sports News and I'm left with the imprint of all the on-screen tickers for a week.

Crikey. Can't say I've noticed anything like that on the Panny. Very, VERY bright whites leave retention, but normally it has to be super hot, like videogame hot, and they go in a few mins when washed with anything else.

Major problem on my 3 year old Pioneer. I watch BBC News 24 or Sky News most of the time and am stuck with their ghost logos always on the screen.

A few seconds of retention on my panny, things like ssn on a saturday afternoon for a couple of hours or extended gaming sessions cause it. As others have said though, two minutes of any other channel and it's gone.

Take the tv out of the stupidly bright and oversaturated mode it will arrive in and turn thr brightness down for the first few weeks. Then do a basic calibration using dvd/bd. Loads of films have thx or similair setup tools on them now.

I've seen a bit of retention on my Panny plasma PZ85 - usually after gaming, which bizarrely, the GAME mode setting seems to contribute to as it whacks up the brightness/contrast....

Goes after a few mins of TV though like others have said...

Had my Panasonic 42" plasma for 3 years, never had any probs with logos, however I do have some burn from watching 4:3 programmes. I can't bear stretched or zoomed pictures.

Sometimes get image retention on my panny with different aspect ratios, logos and ps3 use. But as others have said, within half a minute of putting something else on it goes.
Just like Kryten, I would never use a plasma for computer use due to desktop/windows remaining static for a very long time.

That's why there's an option to have grey instead of black side side panels. Set that to "high".
Panasonic's don't have a "wash" option, but I find that putting it on static (ie, untuned analogue channel) does the job in no time if I have noticable retention (which generally only happens if I fell asleep watching a DVD and so the menu has been showing for hours).
It should be noted that retention doesn't fade while the tv is off.

Done and done, and it doesn't make a difference. My Pio is a bugger for image retention.

Thats right, I have often turned on my LG and seen logo's, as above thoiugh they go very soon.

Still have to see an LCD that can come close to plasma so its worth it imo.

Were'nt the Pio's bad for it a few years back with the panny's better for it?

I had a Fuji i 2004 which used a panny 6 (pw6) screen and up until xmas it never burnt once.

I have a Pioneer KRP Kuro now and haven't seen anything untoward yet... What's the last generation? 10?
