Am I allowed Jens Lekman - Oh You're So Silent Jens? It's a 2005 US/2006 UK album (not a problem judging by the inclusion BSS, CYHSY et al) and also an compilation of previously released EPs, but you really wouldn't know if I didn't tell you - only found out myself when I read the liner notes. It'll be my undisputed number 1 if it's eligible.
Assuming not, I'm not at all happy with the upper reaches of my chart. None of them would have been ranked anywhere near as high if they'd been released in almost any other recent year, and they've made it more or less by default because of being marginally more consistent or pleasantly surprising than the choices just below. So as many have said it hasn't been a good year for great music, but certainly a great year for good music, have a good 20+ albums which are of a very similar standard to my top 10 below. Which is: 0. Jens Lekman - Oh You're So Silent Jens 1. The Long Blondes - Someone to Drive You Home 2. The Decemberists - The Crane Wife 3. The Dears - Gang of Losers 4. Joanna Newsom - Ys 5. Final Fantasy - He Poos Clouds 6. Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass 7. Bonnie Prince Billy - The Letting Go 8. Howling Bells - Howling Bells 9. Mastodon - Blood Mountain 10. The Radio Dept. - Pet Grief Almost as good as, and mostly interchangable with anything around 6-10 above (rankings only very approximate, not much to choose between them at all): 11. Serena-Maneesh - Serena-Maneesh 12. Thom Yorke - The Eraser 13. The Knife - Silent Shout 14. Bat for Lashes - Fur and Gold 15. The Pipettes - We Are The Pipettes 16. Beirut - Gulag Orkestar 17. Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit 18. Flaming Lips - At War with the Mystics 19. Mogwai - Mr Beast 20. Peter Bjorn and John - Writer's Block 21. Sufjan Stevens - The Avalanche 22. Isis - In the Absence of Truth 23. Hot Chip - The Warning 24. The Whitest Boy Alive - Dreams 25. Islands - Return to the Sea 26. Band of Horses - Everything All the Time 27. Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene 28. Cyann & Ben - Sweet Beliefs 29. Grandaddy - Just Like the Fambly Cat 30. Tapes 'n Tapes - The Loon And not at all far behind those: Beck, Built to Spill, Calexico, Converge, Cult of Luna, Danielson, Delays, Dresden Dolls, Espers, The Evens, Grizzly Bear, I'm From Barcelona, Joan As Police Woman, The Mars Volta, Midlake, My Latest Novel, Seafood, Secret Machines, Semifinalists, Spinto Band, Tilly and the Wall, Tool, Tunng, TV on the Radio Last edited by Some bloke; 31-12-2006 at 16:35. 1. Beck - The Information
2. TV On The Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain 3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones 4. Cat Power - The Greatest 5. Bonnie Prince Billy - The Letting Go 6. Mogwai - Mr. Beast 7. The Streets - The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living I've not listened to enough full new albums this year to do a longer list... I'm still hoping for some late Santa deliveries though

Another fine year for music with plenty of good albums. I was quite surprised that P!ATD made the number one spot but I just love it and often still play it all the way through despite being released back in Feb.

Hoobastank - Every Man For Himself Just missing out and throughly deserving a spot in the top ten are: 11. Pearl Jam - ST 12. Breed77 - In My Blood 13. The Mars Volta - Amputechture 14. Kasabian - Empire 15. Johnny Cash - American 5: A Hundred Highways 16. Black Stone Cherry - ST 17. Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist 18. Lostprophets - Liberation Transmission 19. Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly - Chronicles Of A Bohemian Teenager 47. Thea Gilmore - Harpo's Ghost 48. Snow Patrol - Open Eyes 49. Fightstar - Grand Unification 50. Richard Ashcroft - Keys to the World I'm sure I've missed one or two ![]() Two albums would have definitely made the top ten are Terry Reid's Seed Of Memory and Honeysuckle Strange by Howlin' Maggie sadly they were released in 1973 & 1996 respectively, so were both ineligible

This closes at midnight tomorrow night - i.e. when the year becomes new.
Get the final votes in quick, and if those who have put album titles first, could change their posts to the format 'artist - album title' it would make the counting a lot easier Last edited by LouBarlow; 30-12-2006 at 13:17. |

Just saw this. It was 2005 in Sweden I think, but I counted it in my list as it's just been released in the USA.

A big thanks to Lou who is going to stay up on the 31st to make sure we get the results nice and early on New Years day
What year was it when it went pear shaped and the results were so late no one even cared?

Oh, you meant "I feel sorry for the Magic Numbers." Sorry, my mistake .Also, I think there's only one vote for Razorlight in the lists (and that's at number 9). Just goes to show that bands can't get by on past glories, at least on this forum. I thought their second albums weren't a patch on their first. Last edited by Tony Ferrino; 31-12-2006 at 09:10. |
