Sleuth
Hard to get hold of in any region these days. Any word on what, if anything, is happening with this title?
|
For some reason it looks to be OOP dosn't it? Not heard anything, but a quick investigation suggests that if you do spot a copy anywhere, then snap it up (those Amazon Marketplace prices are ker-aazy)
|
/me hugs my copy affectionately
Great movie, didn't realise it had been deleted :( |
Got one from Caiman_US about 6 weeks ago for £7. Yes! Just for once I won one...
|
JLM once said to me that Sleuth was the only film in history in which the entire cast received an Oscar nomination. Never bothered to check but assume he must be right!
|
I think he's definitely right. Had they not opened out "Educating Rita" and "Shirley Valentine" for the screen, both of those would have joined it.
|
I was curious about this and had a bit of a hunt... I assumed something along the lines of Swimming to Cambodia must've been nominated sometime... a one-man-show type of affair and, yes, Give 'Em Hell, Harry's 'entire cast' (James Whitmore) was nominated in 1975.
Also, according to various sites, the entire 'speaking' cast of 1966's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf — Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Sandy Dennis and George Segal — was nominated. |
That's the entire credited cast for Virginia Woolf (it's been years since I saw it but I think there are a couple of uncredited bit parts). Of course the entire credited cast for Sleuth wasn't nominated. ;)

Any news?

I've relented and put my copy up for sale on Amazon - I like the film a lot but when I can get 2 boxsets from DVD Soon for this amount it has to go..
|
wow some crazy prices there. Simply couldnt sell my copy though, terrific film even if the Sailor did give me nightmares as a kid.
|
Are there people in the universe stupid enough to pay those Amazon Marketplace prices?
Just curious. |
Short answer Anephric - Yes.
There are many people out there who have to own a copy and will gladly pay a premium for it. I have no scruples about selling something at an inflated market price if it results in more wishlist discs in return (I consider it a highly advantageous swap, I suppose). However, they are many discs that are sacred and I wouldn't let go for any price.. |
I very much enjoy Sleuth so don't want to let it go... My Lord of the Flies R2 is currently commanding stupid money - I can't let go of that either (Criterion or no...)
My days of launching money hand over fist for titles has long since passed: laserdisc taught me a very salient lesson. |
Sleuth has been deleted? really? I got it from the HMV sale last summer for £2.99..
I have just sold my muppet show box set I got from HMV (exclusive) for £40 on ebay - cost £6.99. but I really like Sleuth - feel inclined to keep it.. |

I would never sell a deleted title that I love, just to make a few quid. I cannot see the point. It's not like we're even talking serious amounts of money here. Just a few quid. |
agree to certain point... for us the muppet show set was gathering dust.. Sleuth on the other hand is a different matter..
Only 1 Sleuth (R2) on ebay.. has 9 days to go.. so am yet to see the evidence.. |
I am not for one denying that Sleuth is a great film but if I can get £30 odd quid for it, I can then go and buy 2 Criterions of my choice (and I know which of these options I would rather have).
The good thing about Amazon is that unless somebody pays what you want for it the disc it just sits in the collection anyway, until or unless it is bought. I guess I don't have enough of the collector mentality to feel precious about something just because it isn't available anymore. I did the same with my Avengers boxsets (which I also liked a lot). I managed to sell them all on Amazon for silly money and took the £300 odd quid and bought a load of Dvd Soon bargain titles instead - and you all know how far £300 goes on Dvd Soon. My girfriend does call me Del Boy sometimes, which doesn't fit at all with the ***** 'Film Editor' image that I am failing to achieve :) |
I'd rather just have the great film :) Rather than sell a great film to buy other great films with. Where does it stop?

If anything, I'd say you're the one who's displaying a collector's mentality: selling one thing to buy another favourite of the collectors - Criterions. Feeling precious about the DVD because it is deleted and you want to keep a hold of it so you can watch it would be the film lover's mentality if you ask me ;) |
