Cheers, Barry.

BTW, we saw Poppoya earlier this evening. Strictly speaking not one for this thread (Japanese) but it is the Korean edition so....

The DVD has an anamorphic trasnfer which is slightly soft but that is no real criticism. Audio is DD 2.0 Japanese which sounds as if it is encoded for prologic surround. Subtitles are very good, with a few odd slip-ups.

The story conerns a "Poppoya", a rail-road man or rail-roader. He is the station-master of an end-of-the-line town that is slowly dying. The coal-mines are closed and the last several-hundred inhabitants are all senior citizens. But how long will the line be kept open?
His story is told in flashback but the main plot is rooted in the present. Just who is the young girl who visits the station?

This was a gosh-darned beautiful film. It was a visual delight (I'm a sucka for snow, but steam-trains too!) and the peformances were excellent. The wife left the room at the end puffy-eyed after spending a good part of the film in tears. It is sentimental at times, but certainly not unforgiveably so. See if you can track it down, very highly recommended indeed.

:D - I tend to comb through all my disks fairly regularly, so you never know! Actually, with this one I'm pretty sure it'll be a keeper. My wife will probably pull my arms and legs off if I sell it.

It really was an excellent film, and my capsule review doesn't do it justice (must try harder). It does help if you like a little sentimentality, though, and this is what seems to have offended some viewers.

Poker Industries came through for me with this (took a few weeks), but I'm not sure if they have any stock left.
The HK is meant to be either full-screen or non-anamorphic w/s, I think.

Well Darcy thought it was good ...

"A Good Lawyer's Wife turns out to be a much different film than its poster or its breezy, rhythmic editing and music would suggest. This is not a movie about the flaunting of social and sexual conventions, however much it may appear to be. Instead, much of the main characters' breaking with convention seems to be more of a survival mechanism. It's in some ways remarkable that such a serious, downbeat film could have reached so many viewers. In the process, Im Sang-soo has proven that he deserves as much attention as other top Korean directors who emerged in the late 1990s. "

Haven't seen no.2 yet, but there are rumblings that Zhang Zi Yi may take over as the lead in part 3. Don't get too excited though, as nothing has been properly confirmed yet.

From Impact magazine (December 03):

'....it now seems that Zhang will be taking over the mantle and playing the lead in the proposed My Wife Is A Gangster 3, set to go into production in 2004.'

Phantom: the Submarine is magnificent!!

The story (written by the writer/director of Save the Green Planet!) is so so and a bit predictable, but the cast (especially Choi Min-su) is great (though Jung woo-sung seems somewhat uninspired) and the film has superb atmosphere and tension. Very stylish and well filmed too with susprisingly good production values. Great ending as well imo. It's definately better than any other submarine films of recent years (like u-571, crimson tide and hunt for the red october).

The HK DVD is very good (16x9 enhanced IIRC) and comes with a slipcase. I haven't got the proper equipment, but considering the sound design I assume the DTS-track will sound pretty impressive.

Highly recommended.

Oh! Happy Day

Pretty much agree with everything KC said about this film HERE (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=2859303<br%20/>#post2859303).

Definitely not your everyday lovey dovey type of relationship. Some pretty candid humour - particularly about a certain anal problem. :gag:

Great performances from both leads. May be a tad confusing initially due to being, well, very stupid at the beginning. One of the best endings I've seen for ages. Kinda puts the Sixth Sense to shame.

Recommend you at least watch it once.

Ono gives this 6.75 out of 10 (which means good BTW)

Ono's Babewatch

Lead actress Jang Na Ra (http://global.yesasia.com/en/artIdxDept.aspx/aid-33147/section-videos/code-k/) is plays a very cookey character in this film which suits her down to the ground. She's got the big smiley eyes but, as mentioned in the film, she looks kinda like a rat or a beaver. :suspect:

She get 5 out of 10. (which means Ono wouldn't given the choice.)

Oh Happy Day has got to be one of the worst Korean films I've seen, it seems to subscribe to the theory that Korean women getting angry & shouting a lot = Funny, which I admit it can be when the film has a good script, but this film is derivative tripe of the highest order. Oh and most the actors in the film couldn't act their way out of a paper bag.

It's no better than any of the usual middle of the road rom-com crap that Hollywood churns out every week.

Oh & while i'm at it My Wife is a Gangster 2 is pretty poor as well, I'm a fan of the original but again this is another comedy that resorts to tired old jokes that just aren't funny, it also has the faintest of links to the first film so it can't even get by via association to that film, what a complete mess of a sequel!

Somebody was asking about Love of South & North awhile ago. If you're still interested, I've reviewed it at Korean Cinema House:

Love of South & North (aka Love: Impossible) (www.koreanfilms.host.sk/southnorth.html)

It's kind of a spoof of a propoganda film, an old story of opposites attract. Oh, and lots of advertising for Coca-Cola. ;)

EDIT:

Umbrella scene of a different type:

http://home.earthlink.net/~mimmack/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/lovesouthnorth.jpg

Just thought I'd add this screengrab from Love of South & North since I find it amusing. Yes, it's yet another romantic umbrella scene in South Korean cinema, only this time it's not raining, save for the flood of Coca-Cola promotions in the film. Actually, "Go Red" could be the motto for this film. ;)

I forgot to say in my previous posts that I've now seen the following Korean films....

Sympathy For Mr Vengeance (great stuff)
Musa (Good)
Shiri (very good)
Memories Of Murder (excellent as I've said before)

I've now just gone and ordered A Tale Of Two Sisters after reading the dvd times review and I'm a fan of asian horror films. Sounds really good in my humble opinion. :)

You haven't seen or ordered My Sassy Girl

Anyway here's a few more worth ordering imho, I'm sure others will disagree.

My Sassy Girl - Universally liked by everyone I think.
Save the Green Planet - Great little Sci Fi
Lee Chang Dong Boxset - This features Peppermint Candy, Oasis and Green Fish. All good films
Tube - This one is subjective, if you really liked Shiri then chances are you'll like this as well. I know there are people who don't rate this though.

I saw A Tale of Two Sisters yesterday - HK edition. The picture has a bit of aliasing from time to time but nothing too distracting. Nice solid blacks and good colours. High bitrate and DTS sound. It certainly comes recommended.

Oh, and the movie is really good too ;)

... Quite confusing though.

@ Yesasia

Into The Mirror

http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/pid-1003022298/pname-Into-The-Mirror/code-k/section-videos/did-165/

In a department store where a fire took place a year ago and people were killed weirdly -- throat cutting with a pizza cutter, skewering through a man's ear with a ball pen, and twisting one's wrist to death, the security manager Woo Young-min (Yoo Ji-tae) who felt self-condemned for the deaths of his colleagues determines to probe into the cases and unveil the truth. But never does Young-min think that the suspect is a woman…
Kim Sung-ho's directorial debut in 2001 "Into the mirror" stars Yoo Ji-Tae ("Ditto", "One Fine Spring Day"), Kim Myung-min and Kim Hye-na. With its tight plot and astonishing ending, this horror suspenser attracted much media attention in Pusan International Film Festival in the same year.

The DVD pack comes with extras including a limited edition of the scenario book which is exclusive for the first edition of the DVD, a commentary by director Kim Sung-Ho, production note, still gallery, theatrical trailer, deleted scenes and three award-winning short films directed by Kim Sung-ho.

Going with the flow of the thread and because Bae Doo-na is fab I put in my order along with Oh Brothers (also 3-disc set) ... both comedies I hope will give me some new Year cheer ... reviews for both films seem to be non-existent but Oh Brothers did well at the Box Office.

A reminder of the top films in Korea This year:

1. "Memories of Murder" 5,101,645
2. "My Tutor Friend" 4,809,871
3. "Untold Scandal" 3,345,268
4. "Oh! Brothers" 3,125,256
5. "A Tale of Two Sisters" 3,110,000
6. "Once Upon a Time..." 2,835,000*
7. "My Teacher, Mr. Kim" 2,470,000
8. "Crazy First Love" 2,340,000
9. "Singles" 2,198,319
10. "The Greatest Expectation" 2,102,000*

*Still showing

Oh Brothers is a film about someone who is left a surprise package by his father ... A brother with a rapid aging disorder ...

New Melodrama ...ing is supposed to be quite good according to AsianDB.

website is here http://www.000ing.com/

The story revolves around the reclusive Min-a, who is having a hard time adjusting to her new school. Having spent most of her young life in a hospital, Min-a keeps her true feelings and her malformed left hand hidden from the world.

A simple story of love and friendship, the film could have easily ended up being contrived and patronizing. But instead, ...ing is a young adults film in the best sense. Like the earlier films of John Hughes, ...ing¡ is successful at taking the teenager¡¯s world at face-value, warts and all.

Order put in at 10.25pm on the 30th.
Shipping invoice at 12.45am on the 31st.

That's two and-a-half hours to turn an order around... (Do You Like Spring Bear, My Wife is a Gangster, Running on Karma, Good Times Bed Times and Needing You, if anyone's interested.)

The Uninvited - Overseas DTS

It has seemed like an eternity waiting for Jeon Ji-Hyun to release her follow up film to My Sassy Girl but at long last I have been able to get my fresh fix of the most gorgeous babe in the World. :D

The film is a dark horror/supernatural thriller which is very much a departure for her and one which sees her branching out and letting her acting shine rather then her stunning looks. Having said that, even dressed and made-up in very dowdy and subdued colours she lights up the screen whenever she occupies it. There are other pretty decent Korean birds in this film but JJH just seems to have so much screen presence these days. :luv: She does seem to have lost a bit of weight for this film and frequently looks gaunt in need of some protein in her. In fact, I'd like to ........... but I digress. Back to the film. :D

I suppose the best way to summise this film is to call it The Sixth Sense mixed in with some horrific and shocking scenes which I found difficult to stomach. One scene in particular involving a small child and a lorry would never pass censors in the West and is so realistic in its execution I still shudder thinking about it now. JJH is, of course, not the only actor in the film. In fact the film's main protagonist, Jung Won, is played by Park Shin Yang who co-starred with JJH in her first film, the much criticised White Valentine. Jung Won is an interior decorator who wakes up on a Subway train to find two children poisoned by their mother. This sets off a chain of events which means he starts seeing the 2 dead kids in his own home and also leads to the meeting with Yun (JJH), a girl who seems to be tormented by the happenings of an ongoing murder trial where her friend stands accused of murdering not only her own baby, but Yun's as well. Soon after their meeting Yun helps Jung Won to unlock some dark secrets from his own past for which he has surpressed and had no memories before the age of 7. These memories are both sad and horrific.

That's all I can say about the plot without spoiling it for you guys. As with a lot of Korean films (of any genre) it can be confusing without repeat viewings and this is no different. I'm still not entirely sure about some elements of the film (in particular JJH's baby) but managed to understand enough to rate this film as GOOD.

The film has, in the main, garnered poor reviews but I can't help thinking that many of those negative reviews were expecting something to match the astronomic MSG. This film is not even close to that but is disturbing, well acted and very watchable. The DTS soundtrack is very well done with ghostly children crying out in the rear channels and some deep rumbling bass when something ominous looms. The picture is w/s but not anamorphic but the print is crisp and clean.

Ono gives this 7.5 out of 10 - well worth a watch even if you're ghey, I mean, not a JJH fan :D

Footnote:
It's just a shame those publicity shots of JJH in a ball gown aren't actually part of the film at all. Let's hope they do some behind the scenes stuff for the Korean R3 release. :)

Great review Ono :) I had started to have my doubts about whether this was worth purchasing or not, but your review has made my mind up for me. Only decision now is which version? Thanks peeps.

The sound is fantastic on the OVerseas version and the picture is very good as well - although during the course of taking the screengrabs on my PC they did appear softer than when viewed on my TV.

Subtitles are extremely well done. I can't remember seeing a single spelling or grammatical error.

My only concern about buying this is the looming Korean Version with all the potential JJH laden extras.

It's a polar bear bookmark. You slide the clip over the sleeve of the book you're reading and place the bear between the pages you're upto when finished.

The dvd is jammed stuffed with extras, off the top of my head there's a directors com, actors com, after film com, alternative ending, alt com, del scenes, NG scenes, loads of cast interviews and behind the scenes featurettes, promo tours with more interviews, loads of adverts and trailers (many of which have nothing to do with the film), picture gallery, and I found at least 4 easter eggs. Plus there's a fair bit more I'm no doubt fogetting, Oh and there's the CD soundtrack with 22 songs on it.
I was quite surprised to see such a commercial failure get such a strong dvd release - It did flop at the Korean boxoffice right ?.

Yes, I really liked it.
It doesn't break any new ground but it's as solid as any of the other recent Korean rom-coms. All the characters are amusing and likeable (especially the guy who plays Bae Du Na's dad).

Bae Du Na delivers another charismatic performance and the film gives her plenty of scope to play the slightly eccentric and cooky girl she's famous for. I can't really understand the luke warm reaction the film received on it's cinema run, it's better than the recent romantic comedy output like My Tutor Friend but it obviously can't compete with the importance of the big hitters like My Sassy Girl. I guess the Korean rom-com is a victim of it's own success as there is little to see in Spring Bear that you haven't already seen before. I still found it highly entertaining and there's no way I'm getting shot of my copy, the only criticism I can find with Spring Bear is that it's arrived a year or two too late rather than there being any fault with the film itself.

Given how Korean audiences tend to flock to these types of melodramatic rom-coms the film proberbly seemed like a safe bet for Bae Du Na and to be fair I can't see any logical reason why it wasn't. It certainly has all the right ingredients for a successful box office rom-com, but like I mentioned before maybe that's the problem.

I think it's very easy to see why Spring Bear flopped:

1: It's just not funny
2: It's immensely derivative, although in fairness that's most likely on purpose.
3: It suffers from the editting problems that make most Korean comedies feel like an episode of The Fast Show. Films like My Sassy Girl can succeed in spite of the "sketch show" flow because it's a very funny movie. Spring Bear on the other hand is about as funny as a punch in the face.

I agree it's no worse than successful pap like My Tutor Friend, but i'm an optimist and I want to think that the reason Spring Bear tanked is because Korean Audiences have grown tired of obvious jokes and gurning actors and are actually craving comedies with some semblance of wit and excitement.

Imo films like Spring Bear are the Korean equivalent of J-Lo movies. Pap the whole Pap & nothing but the Pap so help me get through the next 100mins God.

[The Uninvited] (In fact, already delayed. 'Jeon Ji Hyun' can see what we must not see!)

[Natural City]

[Untold Scandal] aka [Scandal] (Not sure you'd believe or not, anyway it's another BIG THING in 2003 Korean Cinema. [Cruel Intention]-ish Scandal happens in Chosun Dynasty, starring 'Jeon Do Yeon' & 'Lee Mi Sook'.)

[Please teach me English] (Recent film done by the dir. of [Musa]. Romantic Comedy about Learning English. Starring by 'Jang Hyuk' & 'Lee Na Young'. First release is Digipak. HOW DARE YOU TO ESCAPE! And you can understand why few Korean DVD has poor English Subtitles. Highly recommended by mrkwang himself.)

Cirrus888 - I have had a look at setting up an account (looked after I posted here). And it is impossible! Couldn't work it out so looks likely that I shall have to forget it for now.

The only other place that seems to have it in stock still is HKflix but it is $50 + p&p for 5 DVDs there. It looks to be 23900 won at dvd.co.kr (which is about £11 I think) + p&p so was thinking it may be cheaper. But as I can't seem to be able to order the price doesn't really matter after all!!

Managed to work out the p&p costs (I think). 23000 won so about the same as cost of dvds. So about £22.00 all in. Compared to £30 at HKFlix.

Maybe you meant 'Yoon Ji Hye', if you mean the sidekick of 'Bae Doo Nah' in [Spring Bears Love]. If not, well... Have no idea.

She starred [Whispering Corridors] - [Plub Blossom(aka Youth)].

I'm not sure you can enjoy [Whispering Corridors], but it was great film, and her character was too good.

And that's why I enjoyed [Spring Bears Love]. :)

See MrKwang likes Spring Bears Love so there...!:p ;)

As for Yoon Ji Hye she looks fantastic in Plum Blossom (AKA Youth), even better than she does here in Spring Bears Love but the film is for quite a selective taste.
I rate Momento Mori as one of the strongest Korean films I've seen but the negative response to Whispering Corridors has put me off buying it. I might check it out if a cheap HK release becomes available.

Were you after a copy of the Classic LE? I had an extra a while ago and sold it for a pretty penny. Still pretty damn hard to find now. I couldn't even find any with the Original discs. Both of my copies were of the corrected ones.

As for a re-release of the LE set with fixed tint, i highly doubt it. It would seem that an extremely large %age of these sets were sold before the release date, and with it's immediate recall, subsequently went OOP. Can't see the manufacturing co. re-issuing a numbered Limited edition dvd. Of course, there is always the attractiveness of making more money:suspect:

Saw The Uninvited last night and have to agree with Ono's review a few pages back (minus the drooling over JJH :))

It's certainly a film that gets you thinking. Once it had finished I found myself sitting there reviewing what had happened in my mind, and I'll definitely have to watch it again.

There's no huge plot twist, as in The Sixth Sense, but as more details about the two main characters and the events they have been involved with become known, you start to rethink what you thought was happening and, I must confess, I'm still torn between a couple of interpretations.

I'm no cinephile, but as Ono states, the picture is more than adequate though non-anamorphic, and subtitles are pretty good. I think I spotted one grammatical error and there was one time when the subtitle appeared and was immediately replaced by the next sentence so I had to rewind and pause to discover what was said.
