Hi all,
I haven't been reading the forums for quite a while, and have fallen a bit out of touch with new players etc. A friend of mine wants to spend around £350 on a multi-region DVD player... and wants some advice? Any suggestions would be most useful! I'm sure he'll stretch nearer £400 if needed!!

Do a search as this question has probably been answered already.

My Pioneer 646A was under £400 from HCH / Justin & I would highly recommend it (& Justin!) It does DVD-A as well FYI ;)

Really depends on what you want it for, if you want it for both stereo use and AV, then the marantz DV4100OSE is one of the most popular products at the moment, and can be had for £330 M/R. If you want DVD-Audio, then the Pioneer DV646A is worth considering.

If you want SACD, the Sony NS700 is ok, but the most popular and most reviewed sub £400 machine is without a doubt the Pioneer DV545!

The Sony NS900 is available for £399 from quite a few places now. It's also ranked three places higher than the Pioneer by Home Cinema Choice on the list of best players over £300.

Going to resurrect this thread, seeing as my old faithful Panasonic A360 is starting to freeze up with alarming regularity.

So far looked at (threadwise) Sony DVP-NS900 (would match the tv and the amp :)), but people seem to rate the Marantz DV4100ose.

This was looking good till I saw that the Marantz DV6200 didn't have any RGB passthrough and if the dv4100 is the same, then it's definitely out of the picture, can anyone confirm or deny this?

Any other suggestions?

Richer Sounds are doing a multi region Toshiba SD510E for £299, usually £399 for the normal model. What HIFI gave this an excellent review, and it has progressive scan and DVD-audio.

The Pioneer DV646A is now the favourite, and also getting better reviews then the Marantz and Sony musically wise, which is a bot supprising:)

Another vote for the Sony DVPS900.

I moved from a Pioneer 737 to it.

HiFi Choice have just named it best DVD player ever. I think that's going to far but I have to say that the CD quality on it is superb.

It is quite wonderful indeed.

Another vote for the Toshiba 510e for the joy of DVD-Audio that it gives!

Do you need anything special on your TV to benefit from progressive scan? And what software (DVDs) output it? I take it that it will 'travel' by RGB Scart and that I'll notice the difference?

You need a TV with P/S support via a Component input (currently only high end Toshiba and Pana CRT models, Plasma and projectors), a half decent Cable, and some R1 Software;)

If you can find a £100 player with progressive scan, component connections, supports SACD and DVD-Audio, can play a CD as well as a proper CD player and has decent build quality then I'd be very impressed.

he never mentioned wanting anythin like that.. all he said was a multi-region DVD player,, and the mico i have at te minute does have a better picture to my eyes the the previous dvd players ive had.. inc a pioneer and others round the 300-400 mark ive seen...
if u want a bloody good multi region dvd player that plays anythin u can throuaw at it crystal clearly..(even if it is a little ugly).. then the mico is perfect.. if on the other hand u actually need all that other stuff,,, which ive never found myself wanting for as of yet,, then yup,, u gonna have to spend a few more quid ;0)

oh.. i nearly forgot,, the mico for 99 quid DOES have componant Y Cb Cr outputs.. ;0)

I'd go with the Pioneer 545, i did and its a cracking player for the money, cost me 250 quid and plays everything out. MP3 Playback is great and has reduced the amount of CDs i know buy as well, so i save a lot of CD Space but have around 10x as many albums :)

I got mine from Justin way back through the forums special offers, so might be worth a look.

P.S I've literally had all the budget machines put out over the years from the likes of tesco ect and every player had problems and had to go back, after 12 different players i went to my senses and bought a proper player for a decent price. The 545 has never given me a problem even though i managed to drop a floor standing speaker on it and dent it

thats suprising... seeing as most of the "cheapo " models have the innards from more expensive machines in a different case...... the MICO for instance is mostly panasonic internals i believe.. and i rememeber the wharfys bein of a somewhat expensive insides as well.... shneider as well .. one of theres was a rebadged pioneer i think.. so,, theres no reason alot of the time why they shouldent last... as im sure many many ppl on these forums can attest to... look at the ammount of ppl that obviously buy these cheapo machines and never have a problem.. theres an awful lot of happy dansai owners out there ;0)

It's as JamesW was saying, for £400+ you're getting SACD/DVD-A and hopefully decent cd playback. (and DVD-R/RW/coffee maker, etc)

Anyway, at the mo I'm going mad and will be spending £700 on a pioneer 747A.

Nearly had a dilemna on my hands as the Tosh 900e can be had for the same price, but the lack of RGB passthrough means it lives in the bin :)

What the hey, it's only money :D

I must have been one of the unlucky ones then, as i took 3 maybe even 4 ( i lost count) of them back.

I know of 8 dansai's that have been returned to tesco.

As for the mico i had read that it was a good player for the money but dansai :brickwall :shudder:

Justin, I've just ordered the Pioneer DV 444S from you as the impression I got was that the 545 was only really worth it if you had a TV with progressive scan. However, having read some of the opinions here on the 545, I'm worried that the 444's picture and sound quality is not as good as the 545's. Have I made a mistake?

Cheers.
