View Full Version : With Scart Splitter I Can Still Hear The TV
Bit of an odd one this, I'm using a twin RGB scart splitter with a playstation 2 in one port and my Sony 735 DVD player in the other, the splitter has a button that requires me to switch to which device I require.
I find that sometimes the sound on my DVD goes very hollow and if I pause the disc or during quiet moments of the film I can actually hear what is on my television in normal mode (ie I'm watching a disc but can hear eastenders (or whatever is on the current TV channel at that time)). It doesn't happen all the time, it can happen mid film and then when I play another film sometimes it's back to normal and sometimes it isn't.
On the playstation 2 if there is no sound you can sometimes hear the telly too if it's up very very loud, but it isn't really a problem.
My DVD player is wired up in such a way that is also goes to my video (as it MacroVision disabled), which in turn goes to my Satalite, which in turn goes to my second scart port on my telly, switching to this port restores the sound to normal but looses pic quality as it's not RBG.
Something to do with the scart splitter you think?
Not entirely sure!!!! BUT I think the tv has an option for inuts/outputs on the scarts (mine does old Sony 4:3 job) I have a feeling that the scart socket you're stuff is connected to will be setup to output one of the signals (whatever it is you are hearing) I'm not explaining this very well I don't think!!!
Check the setup/options etc on your tv mine comes under menu: input/ouput.
Someone else may be able to explain it better!!
HTH
Nope nothing like that, just checked (thanks for the info though), I've connected the DVD player directly to the telly and still have the same problem, sometimes it's quiet and I can faintly hear the TV other times I can't. So I guess it's the TV or the player or the cable? I hate cabling stuff like this, just when you get everything working right it starts acting strange.).
I'm assuming what you are hearing in the background is the RF terrestrial tv signal. (this can be a problem on sony tv's)
Why not just disconnect this and only use it when you really need to ie. if your sky system goes on the blink.
Or if it is the faint sattelite signal you are hearing then why not just switch off your sky box.
Is this sound at normal levels or is it faint?
Thanks Andrew.
The sound goes very quiet and hollow and you can faintly hear the signal from RF (i'll disconnect it in a minute and see), it's a panasonic TV.
It's not a sat signal as I can change the terrestial TV channel and I hear the program change.

I have a 36PF10 which does that on the AV channels.The simple way to stop it is to go to a snowy channel before switching to an AV channel.

Thanks Napoleon, Did it always do that or only recently? I've had the TV 3 years now.
The strange thing is it doesn't do it as badly on the Playstation 2, you have to pause the game and turn the TV up to full volume then really listen and you and faintly hear something but can't make out any words. On the DVD player you be half way through a film and it will just go, all of a sudden, no real pattern to it.
In case anyone is interested I fixed this last night.
I had the 2nd scart cable connected to my videos second AV port (as I have a macrovision disabled player) which it's been like since I've had it (about 18 months). I disconnected the scart cable that links the DVD player and video and bingo, no more hollow sound or hearing the TV.
What I still don't get is:
* Why has this only just started happening;
* Why does it only happen about 25 mins into watching anything;
But, it's fixed I never record anything to VHS so it's no loss, I'm just glad it's fixed as it was beginning to do my head in.
Thanks to everyone who helped on this one.
I'm bringing this very much back from the dead as I've just fixed the problem!! It was nothing to do with being linked to video player!
My player cut out on me again today and I noticed how very hot it was buried under my sky+ system, so it from under the sky+ system and let it cool down and now it works fine without cutting out.
Don't know why the heat would cause that problem, but it seems to be finally fixed
