Just read this over at the AsianDVDGuide Forum:

Hey all,

I just got the announcement for the Audition R1 DVD. I know most of us have the R3 already, but what the heck...

Title: AUDITION
Label: Chimera
Order Date: April 8, 2002
Street Date: May 7, 2002
Genre: Thriller
Rating: R / Un-Rated Director’s Cut
Running Time: Approx. 115 min.
Synopsis: As close to an arthouse horror film as one could imagine. AUDITION has been called a “well-crafted, visually deft piece of grand guignol” (Nick James, Sight and Sound). AUDITION begins disarmingly when a shy, middle-aged widower, Aoyama, decides to chose his new wife by holding a phony audition for a nonexistent film. He falls for the demure and alluring Asami (Japanese fashion model Eihi Shiina), a former ballerina with a suspect past. Their polite timid courtship takes a 180-degree turn when Asami, trumping the stereotype of the submissive Asian woman, visits her revenge on Aoyama in the most nightmarish of ways. The film morphs from romance to psycho-thriller in the bat of a pierced eyelid. The ending, not for the faint of heart, “realizes a sadistic breach of contract between filmmaker and audience of which Hitchcock could only dream.” (Richard Falcon, Sight and Sound).
SRP: $29.98 (VHS - Rated) / $29.98 (VHS – Unrated Director’s Cut) $24.98 (DVD – Unrated Director’s Cut)

I have no idea who Chimera is but the DVD will be available at most places since its distributed by Ventura Distribution.

Best,

Eddie

Hopefully this'll wipe the floor with the Tartan DVD in the transfer stakes! :)

I know this thread sank like a brick last time, but surely i'm not the only one waiting for a decent release of this title??
Anyways, a little bit more info has been posted over at DVDTalk (http://www.dvdtalk.com/):

We wanted to feature the announcement for the Japanese Horror flick Audition. Set for release 5/7 Audition will be presented in Anamorphic Widescreen, Dolby Digital 2.0 Japanese with English Subtitles and include an interview with Miike Takashi who is often compared to David Lynch and Dario Argento.

I know I'm a bit slow on the uptake with this one, but where is the best place to get this from? Would it be the R3 release from Coolashop or DDDHouse (I take it that this has english subtitles?), or is there a better R1 or R2 out?

Cheers!

When you say uncut, do I take it that the R2 version was cut. Or just that C4 might have wimped out and cut some of the gore?

The R2 German 'rapid eye movies' release of "Audition" is the best out there, see the dvdtimes review (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=750&story=3004)

Also the R1 isn't anamorphic see bullets n babes (http://www.bulletsnbabesdvds.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpBB_14&file=index&action=viewtopic&topic=3407&37233)

The R2 DVD is uncut. Besides, it's not THAT gory.
