JurassicMark

Looks like the French version of Sleeping Beauty is the one to get (UK in Pan And Scan!)
Apart from Amazon France which is quite expensive and charges VAT, does anyone know of any other cheaper but reliable French DVD suppliers?
Cheers

Has anybody got the French version yet ??? If so does the film and all the extras have an Englisg soundtrack??

If this is the case I could be interested in a co-buy.

Me too on the same basis - have we established the difference between the German and French releases yet?

I agree about the english soundtrack & if it has thats 3 of us in then, any more up for it?
Of course we will have to see if what we save on postage from france is not wiped out by reposting discs to people once they arrive in the UK.

Of course the other option is see if someone is going to France on a booze/cigs run & get them to but a few copies. This would save a lot on postage (I work with someone who goeas a fair bit, so I could check with himto see if he's up for it).

If enough people are interested I ll see if we can get a sticky for this.

JurassicMark - sorry for hijacking your thread here, if you want to jion the cobuy let us know, & if so would you mind changeing your header here to mention the co-buy?

I'd definitely be interested in a Sleeping Beauty co-buy, providing someone can confirm that any French subtitles are removable and what the extra features are (although the main reason I want this is the 2.35:1 ratio).

I bought a French release of Scanners off ebay and I can't remove the subtitles on either of my Pioneer players - it's watchable but it does get annoying at times!

So put me down - tentatively - for a co-buy. :)

While I agree that the widescreen presentatation of the film is the reason for importing from mainland Europe, it is also a known fact that the German version's special features have been overdubbed in German.

We are hoping (gambling?) then the French version's have not.

I'm going over to Calais on Wednesday, but will only be checking out the local hypermarkets. I will look for the set if anyone specifically asks me to, but only on the proviso that if I'm asked to buy it, they pay whatever the UK equivalent cost is plus postage (ordinary or recorded) and assure me they'll buy it regardless as naturally I can't guarantee what the cost will be even if they have them.

If interested, let me know here as I don't always check my webmail account daily.

lorenzo - I have updated & added your name to the list.

2099net - Was Amazon France the cheapest you could find then, & have you any info about there being an English Soundtrack & no forced Frence subs?

http://www.dvdzone2.com/ have Sleeping Beauty for pre-order, released on 20/3:

http://www.dvdzone2.com/cgi-bin/en/OM.cgi?command=showitems&pos=0&type=search&search=4975

~£16 delivered, no info on which version it is though -- as you can see, video is listed as 4:3 but since there are very few other details, maybe this is just speculation? Still, it's not long until it's released so hopefully they'll update the specs. Don't know how much amazon.fr are charging but £16 doesn't seem too bad to me :)

Yeh, I saw this yesterday at DVD Zone 2, but reckoned it wasn't the french 2 disc, release date 20 Mar also wrong.

Right a few points:

1) The DVD on DVDZone2 is *not* the 2 disc collectors edition. Is it 4:3 only? Don't know, but I would expect so. The 2 disc set is not out until April 24th 2002.

2) Was Amazon.Fr the cheapest? I doubt it, it costs to £21.49 which I don't think is a bad price all in. I only know of Amazon.Fr and DVDZone2 as reputable European suppliers, but I'm sure other people could point to others if need be. Remember though as we have only recently found out, the cheapest is not always the best option! :)

Total articles: EUR 29,34 / £ 17.90
Frais d'envoi : EUR 5,89 / £ 3.59
--------------------
Montant total de votre commande : EUR 35,23 / £ 21.49

3) How do I feel about the prospect of forced French subs? Well I'm still slightly worried - but having been impatient (stupid?) enough to buy the UK release after all I really don't have that strong a feeling anymore. The 'Making Of' on the disc shows a scene in widescreen for a couple of seconds and it looks stunning. That's why I want to buy the disc. Forced subtitles will not obliterate 42% of the picture like the UK release does!

4) Looking through the list of special features, some would appear to be textbased (especially various information on the history of the production). Will these be available in English?

Got this in an email, not sure which site it's from but could find out if we need to know

Disney is releasing their classic Sleeping Beauty in two editions over in France, a standard movie-only version and a deluxe 2-disc set. The specs are DISC 1: THX-Certified 16x9 transfer (2.35); English and French DD 5.1; French DTS; English and French subtitles; making of; "Rescue Aurora Adventure Game"; Art Attack. DISC 2: History (genesis of the project, Tschaikovsky); Design Featurettes (ink, paint, model references, 70mm tests and more); Music; Restoration; P&S vs WS Comparison; Advertising Materials; Still Galleries and the accompanying 1959 Oscar-winning short Grand canyon (2.35, DD 5.1). The DVDs will be released on April 24th.The discs are also getting releases in other European countries, but as far as I can tell France is the only one getting a DTS track.

Wahoo! Released this coming Wednesday. Hopefully I'll have my copy from Amazon.fr by the following Monday.

I only hope both discs are in the bi-lingual format, as it looks like the second disc may contain lots of text only pages.

I cannot believe that the disc has been mastered as a dual language version - why the hell was it not released over here?

There are a whole series of French DVDs that have been mastered from the original French cinema release of older films, complete with optical sub-titles for the VO (original language version). Scanners is one of these. I got Arrival, 12 Monkeys, Hard Rain, Dune and some others for £3 each, delivered, recently. They all have optical sub-titles on the VO.

Was Amazon.Fr the cheapest? I doubt it,
The best place I know of to find a good price is http://www.dvdpascher.net
They only do R2 searches and quote shipping for France, of course.

Amazon.fr are usually one of the most expensive in my experience.

I *think* mine came today.

I say think because if it was Sleeping Beauty, it came via Parcel Force! As a result I've spent over half and hour trying to get it re-directed to my place of work on Monday AND STILL NOT GOT THROUGH. Also, it's a damn answer phone thing that hangs up after saying all lines are busy - so each call I make is costing me money!

*sigh* Hopefully I will get it in my hands on Monday.

Has anyone seen any web reviews?

disk 1:
Once you've selected english on the first screen you wouldn't know it was a french disk apart from the titles on the trailers (which you can skip) coming up in french. The film is anamorphic 2.35:1. The 'making of' doc is in english with no (or optional perhaps) french subs.

disk 2:
is much more french-ified. The menus are all in french, with no english options in sight. Text-based stuff like the background to the story and the 1951 synopsis are in french only.
Short interviews about the music and the restoration etc are in english but with french dubbed over the top (like on the news) that makes it hard to hear the english.
There is a gigantic amount of graphic material that doesn't need explanation in any language - posters, photos, storyboards, film of actors on bare soundstages acting out the characters movements for the artists to study and copy.
The docu-fiction abut Tchaikovsky and the '4 artists paint a tree' feature are in english with french subs that seem to be forced.
The oscar winning short about the Grand Canyon - nonanamorphic cinemascope - has no words, only music.

If all this french seems too much for you, the 'comparison entre image respectee et image recadree' might sway you. It shows, on the top and bottom of the same screen, clips from the movie in the cinemascope version and the panandscan version. Guess which looks nicer.
I would say that a non-french speaker would still get a lot out of disk 2, but navigating it might be a bit random.
