View Full Version : Your favourite actor ever is.........
....who? and whats your favourite film of theirs?
Mine is a tie between the following
Gene Hackman - 'The French Connection'
Harrison Ford - 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'
Cary Grant - 'North by Northwest'
Russell Crowe - 'The Insider'
I also particularly enjoy the work of Sir Alec Guiness, Toshiro Mifune, Al Pacino, Bobby De Niro, Denzel Washington.
Alec Guiness in Tunes Of Glory which is one of his most under-rated roles.
Just one??, that's a toughy probably Al PAcino. He's cool.
Although i think Brad Pitt and George Clooney have a certain coolness to them.
An actor whose recent work I have consistently enjoyed is James Gandolfini, he managed to steal the acting chops in 'The Mexican' from right under Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts' noses.

Paul Newman in anything he's ever done, but especially Cool Hand Luke, Butch & Sundance, and The Sting.
wide
Harry Dean Stanton is the man.....especially in two of my fave films.....Repo Man and Pat Garret & Billy The Kid.
The latter also has the king of cool.....James Coburn.
Johnny Depp in almost anything.
Marlon Brando - for being the greatest screen actor of all time despite his best efforts to waste his talent. His work in "Last Tango in Paris" will surely never be surpassed for sheer bravery and brilliance of technique.
Gene Hackman - for the sheer quantity of good work he's done, often in films which were unworthy of him but especially for "French Connection", "The Conversation" and "Night Moves".
Michael Caine - for reliability and being extraordinary in very ordinary films like "Alfie". Recently, I thought his work in "Little Voice" was incredible.
John Wayne - for being a great star for 50 years and pretending he wasn't bothered about being an actor while sometimes proving he was, especially in "The Searchers" and "The Shootist".
Warren Oates - for being the greatest of all cult movie stars usually in marvellously mad films, like "Cockfighter" and "Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia".
Harvey Keitel - for taking the risks in the nineties that Robert De Niro should have taken, especially in "Bad Lieutenant".
Humphrey Bogart - for being the coolest tough guy imaginable
Alec Guinness - for being the most self-deprecating of all British film stars, constantly being the best thing in big bad films, including one set in a galaxy... well you know the rest. He also created the most believable spies of all time in "Our Man In Havana" and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy".
James Woods - for being one of the few reasons to keep watching Hollywood films and for never being boring. Any man who could make "The General's Daughter" and "True Crime" watchable deserves my eternal gratitude
Clint Eastwood - for remaining a great action star while constantly seeking out new territory to conquer.
Albert Brooks - for being the funniest man alive.
Michael Douglas - for constantly refusing to settle for safe, easy projects and always being watchable.
Oooh!, I just remembered Luiz Guzman (SP?) he was hilarious in Out of Sight and pretty funny in Traffic too.
Also mentions to Steve Zahn and Jack Black

Sean Penn - because he has a subtlety & nuance that mostactors could only dream about.
Steve Zahn - one of the new boys who is constantly funny & not irritating.
Robert De Niro - For reasons already mentioned above.
Gene Hackman - for consistency.
Steve Buscemi - for playing loser characters so well.
Probably more, but those were the first to spring to mind.
Harrison Ford - enough said :)
Chow Yun-Fat - coolest guy on the planet.

Bob de niro
enough said.
Tom Hanks
Mike Douglas - he plays the same role every time!

Pacino (or maybe Bob De Nero if you caught me on a Thursday !) no explanation needed ! :D
Buster Keaton - no contest!

Well most of the good chaps have been mentioned already so no sense repeating so let's here it for the laydeez...
Linda Fiorentino... always watchable even in trash like Jade but best in The Last Seduction
Jodie Foster... always watchable even in trash like Maverick but best in Silence of the Lambs
Catherine Deneuve... always watchable full stop.
Julianne Moore... always watchable even in trash like Evolution but best in Boogie Nights.
and my vote for Greatest Female Performance of all time goes to...
Bjork in Dancer in the Dark. Its a shame she says she won't ever act again.
I think your forgetting someont the god himself...........Bruce Campbell :D

Benicio Del Toro - Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas (a Samoan god)
Paul Reubens - Pee Wee's Big Adventure (still cracks me up when he falls off the Hell's Angels bike)
Viveca Lindfors - Welcome to LA (A Goddess as far as I'm concerned)
Genevieve Bujold - Choose Me (I could watch her performance as Dr Nancy Love every day of the week)
I've admired & adored the above for years, but special mention has to go to -
Jeanne Tripplehorn - Timecode (her drug fuelled angst in the back of her limo IS riveting!)
Daliah Lavi.
Robert DeNiro
Favourite performance: Midnight Run
Not my fave performance of all time, but it's DeNiro's best all round (IMO) and his back catalogue is the most consistent and impressive.

When I saw Quint's post I thought just for a fleeting moment that he had gone for my favourite, but my eyes focused and I realised that it was not Errol Flynn I saw before me. Errol Flynn is the man.

James Stewart - Simply because he oozes charm, yet he retains that rare distinction of looking and talking like a normal person rather than a film star with an inflated ego. My favourite film with him would certainly be Rear Window .
I also love the following:
Carey Grant: Just such a cool guy. In many ways he's the opposite of Stewart, but he stars in films where you need to be a star rather than an everyday man. Best film: North By Northwest.
Anthony Hopkins: one of the best actors of the last 20 years. I think his performance in The Remains of the Day says it all.
Robert De Niro: He's just sheer class, although he hasn't made a demanding film since Heat .
Al Pacino: Everybody knows why he's so good.
Alec Guiness: A true master, who had a huge on-screen presence. Fav film: Bridge on the River Kwai .
Toshiro Mifune: You can't star in as many great Kurosawa films without being something very special. He has the ability to be as equally convincing as a raving idiot as he is at being a sombre, haunted samurai warrior.
Humphrey Bogart: Just watch him in The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep where he makes Robert De Niro look understated.
Joseph Cotten: Doesn't ever receive much recognition, usually because he's overshadowed by someone he's working alongside (whether it be Orson Welles or Alfred Hitchcock), but he is one of the main reasons why films like The Third Man and Citizen Kane are as good as they are.
Fernando Rey: Merely because I couldn't think of anyone else who could fill the roles in Bunuel's That Obscure Object of Desire and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie quite so deliciously.

I agree with most he the 'A-list' choices that have been made, and would add Samuel L Jackson and Bruce Willis to the list.
I also have a lot of respect for the actors that never achieve this status, yet always turn in a great performance.
For example: Bruce Dern, James Woods, Robert Duvall, Ed Harris, Jeff Bridges, Tommy Lee Jones, Michael Ironside, and many more...
I'm with Tristan and Mike for two of mine.
Humphrey Bogart Almost every single film he is in is worthy, if only for his performance and presence.
Toshiro Mifune His performances in Kurosawa's films are never less than striking. His versatility from Rashomon to Red Beard, or from Record of A Living Being to Throne of Blood is hard to believe.
One that I think has been missed:
Walter Matthau Always entertaining. Perfect comic timing and delivery.

1.BRANDO - Last Tango In Paris, On The Waterfront & Apocalypse Now (who else could have played Kurtz?)
2.JULIETTE BINOCHE - Three Colours Blue & Les Amants Du Pont Neuf
3.DE NIRO - Taxi Driver
Can't be arsed to list honourable mentions and while the positions of 2nd & 3rd may change within the hour, Brando is GOD with more talent in his pinky than any current A list 'star'.

Although Michael J. Fox is too good to be on this list, he is the god.
No. 1 Michael J. Fox
Michael J. Fox has been in such classics as The Secret To My Success, Greedy and The American President[i]. He's been snubbed a best actor nom at the Oscars for [i]The Hard Way, Casualties of War and Teen Wolf. My fave film of his has got to be Back To The Future but the trilogy as a whole has, and never will be matched, for title of greatest trilogy of all time.
...closely followed by Harrison Ford. The man who has played two of the most iconic movie heroes of all time: Mr Indiana Jones and Mr Han Solo. Not forgetting many other superb films he's starred in.

Steve Buscemi: No particular reason he is just a general kind of funny looking actor :D
Bruce Campbell: I know the evil dead geek is voting for him hw predictable, BUT he is very under-rated.
Billy bob thornton: Superb, chameleon like is how I would describe him.
William Dafoe: See Billy Bob Thornton.
Dustin Hoffman: Yeah, definitely got to vote for him.
Al Pacino: Always will be better than de-niro in my eyes.
Johnny Depp: Very much a gamble but when he is on form he really is one of the best.
Samuel L Jackson: plays cool better than anyone
Bruce Campbell:clap:
Not my favourite but can't believe Robert Duvall hasn't got a mention!

William H Macy: Brilliant in everything he does, although he's made the unwise decision to star in some big-budget toss over the last couple of years. I love the way he plays losers. And he's so funny! Best performance: Fargo.
Bill Murray: Just a personal favourite comedy actor. Loses points by not being very diverse. Gains the points back by being so damn funny. Best performance: Ghostbusters.
Jodie Foster: Dunno what to say. Just good. Best performance: Uhh... Silence of the Lambs.
Morgan Freeman: Isn't very diverse, but plays his usual character very well. One of the few believable movie Presidents. Best performance: The Shawshank Redemption.
Samuel L Jackson: Bad mutha******. Great actor! Best performance: Pulp Fiction.
And a list of my most OVER-rated actors:
Robert De Niro
Al Pacino
Humphrey Bogart
Anthony Hopkins.
