I was in Wilkinson's at the weekend (I know, living the dream ...) and while browsing the magnificent audio section I noticed a few things were priced at the odd price point of £5.10

Can't help but think these were items that had already been pre-priced for the post-VAT rise period but due to stock issues or whatever, had been set free early.

Any other evidence of 'premature rip-off Britain'?

yes ive noticed it on a few things, and expect the same companies will then be boasting about 'were not raising our prices on jan 1st!' no, because you already did.

I noticed Costa Coffee had put all of their prices up a few weeks back, wouldn't be surprised if come 1st Jan they announce they are not increasing the price and "absorbing the VAT rise".

Typical. When the VAT dropped to 15% nobody changed their prices, but increased them when it went back to 17.5%. Now they've increased them again...grr!

Are we really that suprised though?

Thing is we do not have more money so will just buy (or save) less. Its ultimately avout getting more money back into Goverment coffers anyway but cheeky all the same by the retailers.

Is anyone planning a major purchase before the official vat rise? Do you think that Pre-vat sales will be worth waiting for?

Costa didn't drop their prices but have been charging a bit extra since the VAT went back up to 17.5% so they are already charging 20% VAT.

**** them!

My work canteen decided they'd do us a 'favour' by including the VAT rise in the other recent increase they did, so they didn't have to worry us by putting it up now and again in January. Thanks. :|
