What choice is there?
The R1 and R2 are both dubbed.
The R3 undubbed is out of print!

I sell them on Ebay  Failing that just get the VHS which is undoubtedly the best way to view this film.
Jet's best - FOL and OUATIC 1, 2 in that order.
Also Tai Chi Master, Fong Sai Yuk 1 and 2, My Father Is A Hero  and the early Shaolin series
Bazkeane, what films did you see?

Never heard of a R3. Please elaborate.
R0 Ritek Taiwan is w/s uncut and in mandarin. Print is decent (best DVD version though) w/ English Subs
The French DVD release has no english subs :(
The absolute best version is on the oop LaserDisc since it is in the original cantonese.
Just like Drunken Master II, there is no definitive version. The R1/R2 dubbing just ruins the film completely.

I think we can assume he's talking about the Ritek version since most equate Asian DVDs with R3.
I think the VHS is the best at the moment - uncut and the Japanese speech is intact

The spine of the DVD says "My Father is a Hero". And really he is a hero. Risking his life for truth and justice. Double kicking the baddies in the face. Using electrical wiring in innovative ways. A great Father - Son story.... with a little chop socky and machine guns interspersed throughout..

Once Upon a Time in China is his best, closely followed by OUATIC2, Fist of Legend, Last Hero in China, Swprdsman 2 and the first Fong Sai Yuk.
Try to see them in Cantonese, if possible. I had a look at the version of Tai Chi Master they showed on Sky last week and it was a shameful piece of dubbing... :(

Yes it is.
and its also available in its correct aspect ratio making the UK VHS WS edition the best one to go for.
Possibly the only time when I'd recomend a VHS over a DVD.

The edition from Made in Hong Kong (whatever happened to them?) may still be available - it's certainly on Amazon.co.uk in the 1-2 weeks delivery bracket. My advice: get it. It's a fab, fab, film.
I too hate the cheesy English dub that most HK films get... the ironic thing being that most HK movies until about 5 years ago were shot without sound, and dubbed thereafter. It's just that they know how to do it right.

The One is the best Jet Li film to come out in quite some time. I thought KOD was a let down, boring and sucked cat poo.
I'll list my 10 favorite Jet Li's here (will try to keep it short):
Fist of Legend
Fong Sai Yuk I
Tai Chi Master
OUATIC II
Hitman
My Father Be a Hero and ****
New Legend of Shaolin
The One
Shaolin Temple I
Marital Arts of Shaolin
One's that sucked my granny's nipple:
KOD
Kids from Shaolin
Dr Wai
Master (this sometimes goes to my fave list for the cheesiness!)
Last Hero in China

There is the opium smoking scene, which was cut.
And the Taiwan is R0 and I have a sneaking suspicion a lot of these copies are really good boots. I don't think anything else was cut from the R1 (the fights) and your R2 is coming out 4/25/02 not 3/02, which I think I posted.
I've already got the R1 so I won't be buying the R2. The dubbing really annoys me, but at least (from what you say) the fighting is all there.

well, the man was right there was a cut at the ending, but none of the fighting. also i forgot to mention that the R1/R2 have a new soundtrack which with the dubbing changes the feel of the movie even more so.
"...The American version fades out early, which deletes a few extra seconds of training/running."
BTW "My father is a hero" has been renamed into the "Enforcer" for western audiences.

Another vote for Fong Sai Yuk (especially part 1), it was the first Jet Li film I saw and is still my favourite and is a nice alternative to his usually very serious style of films.
I think part 1 is out in R1 and soon under R2 but is called The Legend (thanks for that Miramax!), if only HKL could get thier hands on this...
I'd agree with Fist of Legend as a No.1
Just saw The One & Kiss of the Dragon , and would have to admit I loved Dragon & thought The One was a little weak, but a good laugh...

The Opium scene is not cut out due to the fact that it was never inluded in the final print (or so I think - tpr007?)
Has there been any news on any upcoming versions of FOL? (excluding the R2 of course).

The Fighting in The One is pretty good and it is better than his other american releases simply because he says I am no one's bitch! in it ... :)
I find it quite amusing how the views on "The One" are totally polarised between "it's great" and "it's crap".
My copy should be arriving later this week so I'll be making my own mind up at that point.

I think you have mixed up twin dragons with twin warriors which is Tai chi master starring Jet Li.
my best Jet Li has to be My Father the Hero....loved the One too, best US offering so far
I like Kiss Of The Dragon!
apologies in advacen, for I have not read all of the posts!
My input:
-Fist of Legend (MIHK vhs is the best way to own this - 10.99 at splashdvd)
- My father is a hero (Mei Ah from DDDhouse £6 +p&p)
- OUATIC 1 + 2 (2 has better fights)
- Fong Sai Yuk (funny, with very extravagant wire work)
- Last Hero in China (good fights, bizarre comedy)
- Shaolin Temple 1,2,3 (excellent Wu Shu style - his debut!)
- Tai Chi Master (more excellent fights and wire-work)
other notable, with less martial arts
High Risk (Die hard rip off)
Bodyguard from Beijing (The bodyguard rip-off)
both of the above have more gunplay than his usual films.
reviews in full can be seen in my signature link below...
Having read through some posts, i have a few inconclusive answers!
FOL should be getting a release in France with original language. It MIGHT have burnt in subs on the print - otherwise English subs will not be appearing.
as for the opium scene - i think it might be cut in the VHS. although the cut would hurt the film less since the Taiwanese DVD is completely dubbed into mandarin - changing the emphasis slightly and losing dialogue between Japanese and cantonese characters. (there is no action missing from the vhs.)
IMO none of his U.S films are as good as his best from HK. although some of his HK stuff (The Master, Born to defence) are real shi*e
Elephant Man

1. Fist of Legend
Kiss of the Dragon has one best end fights I've seen. The end fight is very entertaining.
I agree that Jet Li's American movies aren't as good as his HK stuff. It seems that American moviemakers just don't know how to use Asian stars. I think they try and get them to be like American heros and it doesn't work very well.
Having said that, and as mentioned above, Jet's final line in The one was worth the ticket price alone.
'I am Yu Law and I am nobody's bitch!'
Once upon a time in China gets my vote for best Li film. It's not only got some great Wushu for which Li is so rightly famous but it's also a very good film in it's own right.
Shaolin Temple I is great if you're into the Arts, it has some amazing Mantis form at the end.
Watched "The One" a few nights ago and thought that it was very poor. Already put it up on Ebay :D. The acting was poor (especially Jason Statham) and the action was quite dull as well. Easily Jet Li's worst movie.

I have only seen 3 of his movies The One,Romeo must Die and Kiss of the Dragon.
Kiss of the Dragon is easily the best of those three with The One being the worst
Can any of you experts tell me this: what is the martial arts film, set in China maybe 100-200 years ago, where the main hero is a girl who fights - most of the fight sequences are set in a travelling market or fair, on some kind of scaffolding. I'm not sure whether it is a Jet Li film or not - I thought it might be 'The Swordsman' but now I'm not sure.
Thanks and I hope this is not too far off topic.
Sounds like Fong Sai Yuk 1 with his mum and the bride contest.
Thank you, I have checked it out on several fansites and it is indeed Fong Sai Yuk that I was thinking of.
OK, so now I can answer the thread question: my favourite Jet Li film is Fong Sai Yuk. I just watched Kiss of the Dragon last night, and I thought it was fairly dire apart from the bit where
<table bgcolor=black><tr><td bgcolor=black><font size=1 color=white>Spoiler:</font></td></tr><tr><td><font size=2 color=black>he goes through a door in the police station and ... whoops! ... it is the dojo with 20 or so black belt cops in the middle of a training session. I also quite like the fact that every cop in France was portrayed as bent.</font></td></tr></table>
There were some vague similarities, in terms of the location and some of the gunplay and car chase sequences, between Kiss of the Dragon and Ronin, but I thought Ronin much better.

Apparently Hero is supposed to be excellent, and according to a mate who is a big fan, it's possibly Jets best.:)
WEll, I watched The One tonight and it wasn't that bad, rather fun actually. Usual screwup script by Hollywood goes without saying, there seemed to be a better film in there than that was shown [what happened to the middle?]. Still at least it was a happy ending for both good and bad Jet Li's ;)
The last few days I have watched Swordsman II and both Fong Sai Yuk films and they stomp all over this. The range of acting by Jet Li in [let's say] Fong Sai Yuk is way above anything he's been given so far.

Totally agree! I watched Swordsman 2 the other night and realised that Jet Li doesn't actually do any "real" Martial Arts in it.... he just flies around throwing a few punches.
My fave so far has to be Fist of Legend - a blinding remake of Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury !!
still looking forward to watching any of the Fong Sai Yuk films but will very soon
OUATIC was another brill movie maybe cos it had another of my faves Yuen Biao showing off his acrobatic usual self
OUATIC 2 was worth it just for the showdown between Jet and Donnie Yen :shocker: WOW !
My Father the hero/enforcer was a good show due to the bond between Jets father character to his son and great end fight scene with Ken-Lo (Jackie Chans real life bodyguard) who was also in drunken master 2
Twin Dragons/TaiChi Master - mind blowingly Brilliant Wire Fu by Yeun Woo-Ping
others I enjoyed for a laff were (even though all round movie was crap) :
The One - spoilt by crap story and Jason Statham's cringing US accent:oh-hum: decent matrix-like fights
Romeo Must Die - i loved how that fat bad guy kept coming back for more beats! LOL i also like the scene with the fire hose with jet showing off his Wu-shu skills
High Risk: Jet plays a bodyguard of a guy who spoofs Jackie Chan and alleges that Jackie doesnt do his own stunts in real life:norty:

I always thought that Hitman should have Slayer's "Angel of Death" playing in the background whenever the Angel of Death appears on screen. That would make the movie around 10% better IMO.
