and are new bands as good as the old ones like 'jesus and mary chain' / crowded house ?

I still listen to the old school Metallica and Guns n Roses.

I find it hard to keep track of the latest music because we don't have the definitive chart anymore. There are so many different charts out there now, I don't bother. And MTV are shi'ite.

are the prodigy still cool?

I picked up Invaders Must Die and it reminded me of Jilted Generation and the early 90s, also recently picked up Massive Attack's Heliogland and that reminded me of the same time period (especially with the Marina Topley-Bird vocals).

Those were good times (when all this was fields etc)

I put on Appetite for Destruction last week, and its like one of the best rock albums ever! I never thought it was as good years ago, when I first listened to it at 8 years old on cassette. When I was older, I only thought the singles from the album were good, but now I think every track is amazing. Especially loving Out to Get Me.

If you're still liking rave try the new Danny Byrd "Rave Digger" album on Hospital Records. Great rave v drum&bass fusion. Amazed when Ill Behaviour made it into the charts last week and Radio One put it on their A list.

I am 55 (almost) and like listening to Iron Maiden, Def Leppard etc - as I have been for over 30 years. I like to remember that the present Iron Maiden lineup are all in my age group and their latest album Final Frontier is brilliant. (Love at CD cover art too!)

I'm 27 and I listen to The Beatles, The Who (who I've seen live), Bowie, Johnny Cash and I'm forever discovering old fresh music. Some people seem to find it strange, but they're the ones missing out as far as I'm concerned.

Of course, there's lots of modern music I like but listening to mainstram radio these days is a depressing experience. Tiny Temper, Katie Price and the rest of the chart-dominating guff these days can all pee off and die as far as I'm concerned.

But age ( or passting time?) can sometimes make a difference in attitudes towards a particular band. During my teens in the early 70s, my friends and I used to think Led Zeppelin were the bees knees (and ankles) but somehow I can barely stand listening to them now. But a band like Def Leppard for example, who gained prominence almost a decade later than LZ and tend to use a more linear rhythm to their music, still appeal to me very much.

Strange how kids now like old bands.

The prodigy have no been around for 20 years. The thought of listening to 20 year old bands when i was 18 would have made me sick to the stomach.

Well, that's just daft. Coz you'll never get everyone to agree that band X is good or great. For the record, I like a lot of folky, well-crafted stuff (more so as I've got older) but I still don't get Crowded House. A track like Weather With You just grates with me. Don't get me wrong - I can see why some people like them, but it just leaves me cold. It just doesn't engage me emotionally and it's definitely not 'exciting'.

Yes, nice arrangements, but the sort of band I'll admire from afar rather than get excited by. I used to live with a girl who was a bit obsessed by them, so they're forever tainted in mine eyes by endless, endless, endless repitition.

Old bands are refusing to die and reforming to play for the old faithful who can remember ten years ago but can't remember where they put their teeth 5 minutes ago :D They're filling out the touring schedules.
I've recently managed to see The Joy Formidable and Kellermensch are lined up for a weeks time with Apocalyptica in a couple of weeks and I'm 47. Mind you new these days can be 10 years old. Green Day who are popular with "the kids" are a veteran band from the 90s afterall.

I've heard more than just a single, LB (although, to be honest, I don't remember much more than WWY now). Whether you want to believe that or not is up to you...

Do I need to add an 'in my opinion' after everything? Anyway, being dull, which is precisely what I'd accuse of them being, is perhaps the worst sin you can commit in art (IMO ;)).

A comment on art, unless explicity attributed to someone else, is implicity the opinion of the commentator. If someone told me a film, album or book was ****, of course I'd attribute it to the person. There will always be someone who sticks up for something and always be someone who'll call it crap (no matter the 'general opinion').

A song that's well written can also be (perceived as) dull. There are songs used in musicals that are held up as good examples of song writing but I wouldn't personally choose to listen to them. See also Crowded House.

Yes, but then you have to evaluate the credibility of the commentator

No, you just to have realise that people have different tastes and want different things from music. I'm not a fan of music that feels overly studied and I'm more of an appreciator of sound than lyrics (generally speaking).

I would give my opinion on Crowded House, but as - based on the evidence of the hit(s) - I've never really listened further I guess I'd better not :)

Things are so different now though - in the 70s we only had 20 years of "pop" history to look back to. (I know there's a longer lineage but the term was only generally applied to rock and roll onwards) It's hard to believe there were barely more than 20 years between Bill Haley and the Sex Pistols - and in that 20 or so years we had the British Invasion, Psychedila, Heavy Rock, Prog, Glam, Electronica, Punk, Ska, Bluebeat, Dub, Lovers, Doo Wop, Motown, Sax, Atlantic, Funk, P-Funk, Hip Hop and the Singing Nun...

In fact, the roots of pretty much every musical genre we're still listening to 30 years later

My reply was mostly down to the recent Prodigy and Massive Attack albums sounding like the (good) stuff they did 20 years ago.

Although, to be fair, that's mostly aimed at Massive Attack as I thought Protection was great, Mezzanine was ok, and 100th Window was completely forgettable. For me Heliogland was an epic return to greatness.

Anyway, I'm as old as baffled (40 next month), I really like the two Professer Green tracks I've heard "Just be good to Green" and "I need you tonight", but I'm not sure if that's wholly down the tracks themselves or from liking the originals and the changes he made.

I like them because they mix great hooks and melodies, fantastic middle eights and changes, some good moody stuff and thoughtful lyrics. If you think they sound boring then of course that's your right. However, it makes a nice chnage from the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-guitar solo or inane lyrics and shouty old ruubbish from most of today's "in" crowd.

(Although to be fair I can see why people have grown to hate Weather With You as this suffers from over repetition of the chorus - even more so in the single version than on the album).

I think it also depends upon the age of a person in relation to the decade in which a particular type of music became popular. About the only thing that I like from the 70s is the music and since a lot of Hard Rock & Heavy Metal bands hit the scene in the 70s, people (usually men) now in their late 40s to mid 50s tend to still follow those bands. I feel like I have aged alongside some of the big names like Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) or Joe Elliott (Def Leppard)

Johnny Vodka

I think it also depends upon the age of a person in relation to the decade in which a particular type of music became popular.

*I think* that's the point I was trying to make in the other thread. I'd say that much of the music that means the most to me was the stuff I got into in my mid teens to early twenties, and much of that was current at the time (Suede, Primal Scream, Radiohead). 60s Liverpool was so distant/alien to me I could never get into The Beatles (although there are maybe a couple of their songs I'm surprised to enjoy when I hear them on the radio).

I still enjoy 'older' music and new music, but I think you bond more intensely with music when you're in your teens/early 20s, especially when you're lurking in your room listening to the most miserable tunes you own when your dream girl rejects your advances. :suspect: :D

The main difference for me now is that I tend to use music to pick me up (hence my preference for dance music) than to help me wallow in misery.

I actually much, much prefer both Mezzanine and 100th Window to the rather dated and "dinner-party" Blue Lines and Protection. I've not yet heard Heliogland. I agree that The Prodigy's best work is certainly their older stuff, specifically Music for the Jilted Generation.

One clear exception to the rule is Portishead, whose 2008 Third album represents a career peak.

Slightly digressing from the main topic while remaining with the age issue, it amazes me how some ageing rock stars maintain their stamina during live performances. I was watching/listening to the DVD of the live act by AC-DC for the Iron Man 2 show last night and the band members' energy on stage was amazing, considering that they were over twice the average age of most of the audience. Brian Johnson is 63 years old, for God's sake and did not seem to let up at any stage.
