View Full Version : Claiming Tax relief for Doctor

I am a hospital doctor and have been qualified since 2005.
I have had annual subscriptions to bodies and professional registration fees since then, which are required to practice.
They amount to the sum of about £1500-£2000 a year. Also a higher rate tax payer.
Do I need an accountant to get a tax rebate ?
or can I do it myself ?
Also how far back can I go to get a rebate ?
I have no other source of income.
Any help much appreciated.

If the bodies or associations appear on this list:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/list3/list3.htm
Then all you need to do is write to HMRC with the amounts you pay to each of them, naming them and how many years you have been paying. If you put photocopies of the invoice in the letter it might happen quicker.
You can go back to the 2004/05 tax year, but if you want to claim for that year you will need to get your claim in by 31/1/11.
Take copies of everything give them a month (ha ha) and then phone up an make a complaint that you want a refund. HMRC are understaffed and v v slow at present so it probably won't happen quickly but if you kick up a fuss it will be done quicker :-)

Do I need to complete any special forms?
Or just tabulate in a letter plus invoices?
Also should I include any p60s

No form needed just knock something up for each tax year, probably best to send copies of your p60.
I have the same issue! Trouble is I pay most things annually in either August or September. Is it simply a case of dividing the 12 month sub into 12 and then splitting it appropriately into each tax year, or is does each sub come into to the tax year the lump sum was paid?
Thank!

Each sum comes into the respective tax year you have paid.
