I've now got myself a TiVo and want to upgrade it with another hard disk. I've read a few bits and pieces about this already and wanted to know if anyone had any ideas as to the best second HD to get.

Also, who's done this already, which instructions did you follow and were there any problems.....?

Best bet is to check the TiVo forums: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=14

I think that Maxtor 80Gb 5400rpm drives are OK for this, 7200rpm generates too much heat apparently. But then 2.5.5 seems to keep the fan running longer, so the box will be cooler!

I also saw an article at www.tomshardware.com

Thanks

I upgraded mine to 160GB last night. Just stuck in an 80GB Maxtor drive which was blessed by TiVoMAD (see www.tivocommunity.com for contact details). All went fine. Woke up this morning to find TiVo completely dead. New hard drive has failed. Now without TiVo for a number of days. :(

And there was me thinking that hundreds of people were going to reply saying "I've done it, it was easy, and here's how..".

Guess this is not quite so easy as it looks..... :(

Oh, Craig, good luck with getting it sorted :)

Don't let me put you off. It is easy if you do it like the following:

1. Check to see if your TiVo has 1 or 2 hard drives. If it has 1, it will be easier.
2. Go to www.tivocommunity.com and to the UK Forum.
3. Contact TiVoMAD.
4. Order a hard drive and have it sent to him.
5. He will set it up for TiVo (aka bless it).
6. You take your lid off, attach the new drive bracket (TiVoMAD will supply you with this) and then the new hard drive.
7. Hopefully it will work.
