Can anyone recommend some royalty-free background (piano) music, for a photo-slideshow I'm putting together ?

Just needs to be very simple - a few melancholy plinks & notes.

I've got some "pay what you think" tracks, but this is for a public exhibition, so I'd rather not risk infringing any copyright.

Thanks. :)

I can't help by suggesting any particular pieces but it might be worthwhile trawling the jamendo website. I think most (if not all) of the music is available under Creative Commons. Any restrictions will be listed by the artist so you'll know if your ok to use the tracks.

freeplaymusic.com is usually reliable - might take a bit of a trawl to find what you need, but it's all fair game for your sort of project.

I used one track from there the other week, the way I understood it as long as you mention the site and give a credit to the artist its ok?

Daughters karaoke video got a copyright caution thingy that youtube themselves had, but thats daft as its not even the original artist in the track.

Problem is, I need the music for a slideshow to be seen by the public (at a free exhibition) which would seem to go against the std T&Cs -
Can I use music from jamendo for non commercial uses?
Jamendo offers free streaming and download of music published under Creative Commons licenses. On jamendo, artists grant use of their music for private uses free of cost.

To be honest, when I make a personal slideshow of a wedding or birthday, I (wrongly) use any old music as only a couple of dozen people will be seeing it, in the privacy of their own homes. But I've got more respect (caution !) in the public arena !freeplaymusic.com is usually reliable - might take a bit of a trawl to find what you need, but it's all fair game for your sort of project.Nope - still no good - 2(c) Free Personal Use: ... when FPM music is used for personal non-commercial purposes (personal listening pleasure, personal family slide show, (cannot be posted on a website.). The use / purpose must be non-revenue generating, either directly or indirectly (promo, demo or other similar uses are consider indirectly revenue generating for the purposes of the preceding sentence). Free Personal use excludes broadcast use of any kind, including, without limitation, web, blog, and podcast, gaming or shareware.

I didn't know Jamendo had started charging to provide tracks for commercial use. I've got some of my old stuff up there. I might take it down now, it sort of goes against the reason I used them in the first place.

I think what you're looking for is material published under a Creative Commons Attribution (BY) licence, Share Alike (BY-SA) or Non-Derivative (BY-ND). I think the non commercial use tracks are listed as (NC). Its been a while since I licensed anything so you might want to double check that

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/

This might be a useful resource for what you need.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Piano_music

If you click on the speaker icons it'll take you to the Summary page which sets out the terms of the licence for the track.

I've just remember this site (http://www.jamstudio.com/Studio/index.htm) it allows you to compose music using different instruments.

It's a bit basic and to get the finished song as a .mp3 you have to be a paid member $24.95 for 6 months.

Might be worth in if doing a lot of music.
