Its been a while since Southend have been in League 2 but after last season, its hardly a surprise

As of this evening we were finally able to sign the 17 players that Paul Sturrock, our new manager had signed up on pre contracts due to a transfer embargo being in place over the summer

We start off as we finished last season, with Stockport, and after watching the friendly against West Ham, I'm more optimistic than I have been for a while

Bradford or Gillingham to win the league

I'll settle for midtable and consilidation. Never thought I'd say that about Southend in League 2

Port Vale finally look like they might be able to genuinely push for playoffs at least this year. Micky Adams has turned the playing side around and there's even some loaded banker wants to buy into the club. Good result today at Bury which we need to follow up with a strong home win next week to get the fans on board and get some momentum going.

Fancy Rotherham to go close, Bradford should do well but wouldn't be surprised if they fall short.

I'd hoped not to post in this thread for a little while. Ho hum.

At least we're off to a good start to the season. Hoping for at least a playoff spot (which we'll then waste in traditional fashion).

You should have been in double figures today

3 games in and we can tell its going to be a long season

Why can we not win games? It's getting ridiculous, we've drawn about 90% of the games so far this season.

Finally got a run of wins under our belt

The season's beginning to shape up nicely - not much to separate the top half of the table yet.

Re-Bradford
Was full of optimism before the start of the season (after the way we ended last season on a high). All the pundits were tipping us for promotion but so far this season we have been terrible. Sometimes unlucky but mostly terrible :D Nice to get first win on saturday since August but the players seriously need to get with the program or another year in league 2 beckons

As always, we're taking it right to the last game and not making it easy for ourselves. Need to match the Shrews' result to keep automatic promotion and so avoid the playoffs, which we always lose.

Welcome back ;)

Its amazing how some of our fans slated Corr and complained that we needed a 20 goals a season striker...

Would be nice to keep Grant (no chance) and Ferdinand (ditto).

Shame about Tilson and Lincoln

Wheels fell off for vale massively when adams went to sheff utd mid season last year. After failing miserably there he's back and even a director now after some shocking boardroom politics.

Lots of unrest at the club, complete boycott by a lot of fans and a new ceo who is not making himself popular by putting ticket prices up to £21.50 for fourth division football.

Can see us in administration this year sadly, a good result for us will be to finish the season. I'm pretty much done with the club, I'm ashamed of the board, team and fans.

Crawley to buy the league by a mile.

Good luck, a quality player on his day, a liability on his worst.

Thanks, I've been reading around the PNE, Southend and Charlton forums today :)

Seems to have struggled a bit recently, and a lot of fans seem to question his social life/attitude. Not sure why we signed him as we have central midfield well covered, presumably we have another leaving (Ferry?) which is a shame.
----------------------------------------------
So how do people rate their teams chances this year? I'll start:

SWINDON
-----------
Manager : Paulo Di Canio - talks a good game, can he manage as well as he talks?

Outs: Most of last years relegated bottlers. There were a few quality players in there when they could be arsed.

IN: About 11 players, 8 of which are foreign players I've never heard of.

Prediction: No idea. We could be brilliant. We could be a disaster. Pressure is on to get promoted but with such a turnover of squad and a rookie manager its going to be challenging. We will be the yellow scum from down the A420 though :)

sleep4ever
27-07-2011, 12:34
SOUTHEND
-----------
Manager : Paul Sturrock - Possibly too good for us, managed to stabilise a sinking ship last season and at one point the playoffs looked a possibility

Outs: Anyone I bought a shirt of with their name on the back. Dammit.

IN: Neil Harris. Pretty much all you can say really. There are other players but all of our season hopes are pretty much tied up in that signing.

Prediction: Staying in business would be a start. And work starting on the new ground would be nice (should be sponsored by Camelot as the odds are the same).
I am tempted to bet on promotion this season, but you should never bet on Southend as you never know which Southend will turn up - the one that thinks it's Brazil or the one where the players play like complete strangers. It's never boring supporting them.

Well not long to go till the season starts Im getting very confident Bristol Rovers have had a good pre season so far with so many new faces Paul Buckle seems to have put a good attacking team together.

At least we should make the play offs 1st game is live on sky welcoming the AFC wimbledon to the football league hopefully Rovers can spoil the party

BRISTOL ROVERS
----------------

Manager: Paul Buckle come and cleared out the mercernaries bought in 15 new players (a couple of wingers aswell which is a novelty)

Out: 90% of the deadwood from last year

In: two many to mention but we will score goals for fun !!!!

Prediction: Play Offs

Looking forward to a few local derbies

Hope I dont put the mockers on the lad Im sure he'll get in the southend first eleven and will get a good reception from the home fans when southend come to the mem if he plays of course.

Leon Clarke was good for us too when he was on loan, there was a time when he was too good, he wanted to stay but it came down to money issues. However there was one match where all the Southend fans wanted to do a Paolo on him.

Interesting to hear the PDC take on what happened. Apparently the argument started with the fitness coach - Clarke thought they had trained too hard over the (then) 8 days he had been with us. Fitness coach disagreed.

After the game Tuesday the fitness coach kind of gave it the "I told you so" after Clarke was blowing out is ass for the last 10 minutes. He told him he'd be running again on Wednesday. Paolo steps in to "diffuse" it, and does the opposite.

Local press today say that Clarke wanted out after just over a week because of the fitness regime. And that PDC received a text from within QPR saying "good luck with the nightmare".

There are of course two sides to every argument and nobody has covered themselves in glory.

The club are looking to send Clarke out on loan ASAP. Not bad for 12 days work!

Once a club stops paying players, they should be docked points.

So, Plymouth players set to go on strike. Should never have been allowed to start the season.

Once a club stops paying players, they should be docked points.

I guess it was the promise of "funds being in place" for the takeover (presumably by the administrator) that convinced the league to do otherwise.

Really feel sorry for the Plymouth fans, players, and manager, who have done nothing wrong.

Yes rules are rules.

campdave
02-09-2011, 13:39
The league need to stop listening to promises and only allow actual evidence to stand. It's not fair on the other teams in the league if some teams get a cricket score against a youth side.

That's a cracking result for Morecambe today, Crawley not making many friends with their managers attitude so that will go down well across the league I would imagine.

Vale are plodding along with the usual mid table form, nothing to get excited about for us this year yet. Most fans are still more interested in the politics than the football.

When Blair Sturrock plays 90 minutes I didn't need to ask if you had injuries up front.

The 'gypo' up front looked useful, missed a sitter header though by putting it against the bar. Was taken off at half time for the ginge. I think your chance went with him.

In truth we were reasonably comfortable for most of the match.

Never seen this thread before...

Although a life long Gooner (my Mum was born near Highbury), I have always gone and watched Crawley Town. From the dark old days of Town Mead and the Beazer Homes League, players like Cliff Cant and Tony Vessey to what we have now. I never thought I would see the day that Crawley can really seriously challenge for anything.

My daughter plays for Crawley Town Under 11's and is looking good to continue up into the next age group...as she plays for Crawley, I get a half price season ticket and my daughter goes for free...we have been to every home game, and on the whole have liked what we are seeing.

Apart from of late, where Crawley seem to insist on playing a horrible long ball game.

Great to see that Crawley beat Bury today 0-2 to go through to the next round of the FA Cup...

So why is it that Crawley seem to be so unliked by other fans...I realise the manager is a bit of a character (and has a slightly dodgy past), and I guess rival fans could be a tad envious of the cash being thrown at the club...but for me to see little old Crawley rise up and challenge has been a great pleasure!

You answered your own question for my reasons. But he isn't a bit of a character, he's a fat crooked ******* ****.

The money thing, well yes I can see that being a problem for some. Every club that spends a lot gets criticised by peer fans. However unless your benefactor is really some rich sheik clearly your spending isn't sustainable on gates of just 3000 average. I think there is suspicion of how your "project promotion" is being funded..

Going to watch the Crewe game on NYE. The problem that Rovers have on their hands is that Buckle has been given so much freedom with the playing staff. Only Anthony remains from last year, and is is not a very good defender. His treatment of Campbell has left a sour taste in the mouth.

He has been a very arrogant manager, the club should have been right up at the top of the league. I am inclined to say give him time due to the investment made in players, they need time to gel. Perhaps someone should have said you cannot play your first game of the season with 10 debutants. My issue would now be that Buckle is the only thing that brought these players together, it could get even worse if he left.

I think what has annoyed most rovers fans is the fact the bloke is a complete plonker who refuses to personally take any blame when things go wrong. The more interviews I hear from him the more I hate the bloke. Out of the 18 signings he made I think we have 1 maybe 2 players who could play at L1 or above. They are all very much L2 journeymen.

Good luck for tomorrow. I'd have liked to have gone to see Steve Phillips but can't stand to watch Buckle be clueless and see a rovers team with no passion or motivation.

PS. Sawyer is the other player here from last season!

Timlin's arguably been our player of the season, I'm pleased he's staying.

There was some suggestion we were going to sign Benson, but as you've beat us to him and we need a striker, we'll happily take Benyon.

I think that'll be it for us in this transfer window, unless somebody comes in for one of our players and we need a replacement.

And Aldershot arent offering refunds for the botch up, but are offering 50% discount to reattend

Just as I thought Crawley could not play any worse...went to the home game last night against Barnet. Long ball after long ball...a goal up after two minutes and that was it. If we had played the ball on the floor it could of been a cricket score....seems some people are happy that we are winning even though we are not playing too well...I would like to see a bit more from the team personally!

Well 2-5! Truly awful performance in the first half, the defence was atrocious. Anthony's confidence was shot, would not be surprised if he and the keeper (who got subbed at half time) don't play again under Buckle. However long he may last?

The upshot was that they dominated the second half, with a bit of luck a great comeback could have been on.

We might be top of the league but its best to be level headed as it is only January. Some of our fans seem to forget that unfortunately, especiially with a high scoring win against the team at the bottom (great to see Moshni stay on the pitch, and score).

Just to be clear (you may have realised), he was sent off for waving his arms about after a free kick wasn't given nearly leading to a goal. The kick up te arese was after final whistle after Ritchie skied a penalty.

I think he is either a genius or just mental. I think he'd wind me up if he was the visiting manager, but I love him and his passion.

As for Evans, he's just a fat Bobby Davro. Who cares what he thinks. Cheltenham and Southend splashing the cash, no offence but as if...We have had a fair few signings this year, its not as bad as it looks because we had almost an entire squad leave over the summer. Besides, if Crawley had crowds of more than 3000 perhaps he'd have some money to spend.

Di Canio got it right last time Evans was on about the "Di Canio circus". He just said "I've never heard his name, I don't have anything to say to a person who is one of a million people talking about me in the world." Then we beat them 3-0. Bring on Valentine's day, Swindon v Crawley.

As for Evans, he is abrasive, but what he is doing at Crawley is remarkable and he surley should get recognition for that.

Once the new stand goes up (in the next few weeks I believe) I can see the attendances creeping up. The new stand will appeal to families etc rather than all piling into the terraces and the somewhat feisty banter of the supporters!

Arsenal is my team, has always been since I was a kid. When I was old enough to go to watch footy matches, I would go and watch Crawley (where I am born and bred) rather than travel up to Highbury (my Mum wouldn't let me go)...once I got to a point where I could go to watch Arsenal I stopped watching Crawley and went to watch Arsenal.

I have now reached a point where (although always a Gooner) I am getting much more enjoyment watching Crawley again (especially as I can take my daughter with me)...I 'enjoy' watching Arsenal on the TV, but really have no motivation to go and watch them live anymore....

I live a 10 minute walk from the Stadium, and have been totally taken in by Crawley FC. That is why I say 'we'...as I feel more of an association to Crawley's football than Arsenals! (Something I never thought would happen)

Well vale are on the verge of administration so count us out of the play off fight. We'll be lucky stay up. HMRC issued the winding up order this afternoon.

Inevitable given the way the board and fans have been at each others throats for the last few years but still gutted. Some of the directors should be facing jail time for the stunts they've pulled, it's outright fraud. We've been trying to get the FA and the council involved for months but they all sat by and did nothing and will no doubt hammer us now.

So fed up with football at the minute that I may just walk away for good.

With the gates we draw in we've no excuse. We had two directors being issued with huge quantities of shares on the basis of an IOU that was never paid, they then used these shares to vote themselves onto the board. One became chairman and the other ceo. They were both on 100k plus salaries and extortionate expenses and have both now vanished leaving the bungling idiots that thought it sounded like a good idea to hand us over to the taxman.

How this isn't criminal is beyond me, they all want locking up.

Sorry to read about that paulsaz, not least because you were going to steal O*fords playoff place.

Hope it works out somehow. There is always hope. We've been in admin twice now, mercifully before the -10 points came in, and were effectively being run by a charlatan who was a disqualified director. But somehow we lucked out with new owners who so far have been superb, even if we did get relegated.

Guess I'm saying it is never over until it is over.

Are the fans questioning the sale of Matt Tubbs yet? It seemed an odd decision at the time. And his record since joining Bournemouth is 1 goal in 6, way worse than at Crawley.

It reminds me a bit of our situation when Danny Kedwell left us to join Gillingham. Luckily we got in Midson, who's not been too bad, but it took our team a while to adjust and in all honesty we're still struggling for goals. Hopefully we can beat Plymouth tonight...

I had no problem with the sale of Tubbs, it was to his home club and for a silly price compared to what we bought him for. I question the sale of Barnett though...actually, I question the letting him go on loan till the end of the season then the sale. Why not keep him at Crawley till the end of the season then sell him? Yes, it was, again, silly money for Barnett, but the last 4 games have all had Crawley battering the opposition but not being able to put the ball in the net.

Crawley have signed Gary Alexander, who to be fair has been reasonable in the lower leagues since we let him go.

Big pressure on Cheltenham. Obviously we want to win it, but a loss for them would give us a 9 points gap and a game in hand.

I may be getting confused...we are talking about the Akpan foul and leg break? The incident happened right in front of me, I really did not think there was anything malicious in the tackle, and that it really was an unfortunate that the break happened. Yes, I agree that a 3 match ban does not balance up the fact that the player may not return to the game at the same level, but Akpan is not a nasty player and a 3 match ban is penance enough.

I would be disgusted if Crawley fans caused trouble...this is where I think we are talking about different games, I have never seen anything untoward from our supporters, just some good hearted (and at times close to the knuckle) chanting

I'd like both Torquay and Crawley to lose :p (and if that did happen I'm sure Macclesfield would do us) and us win.

In the real world however I'd still like to be shot of Crawley in the play offs.

Unlucky in the end sleep4ever...Torquay lost but we managed to squeek a 0-1 win and have gained the last automatic promotion spot!

Looking forward to taking my daughter to watch Crawley in League 1!

Will be having a few brews tonight to celebrate...I had a horrible feeling we would choke if it came to the Play Offs!

Yes congratulations Crawley.

As usual we couldnt have made it any closer :brickwall Torquay 3-0 down by half time, just needed to win (did that) and for Crawley to draw or lose. Not to be.

Crewe look rather ominous, not having been beaten in 16 games.

Congratulations to crawley. Come and join the party S4e. Can be no better way to win promotion than at Wembley. Good luck.
