i believe there is a compatibility issue with the french R2 in the mood for love and thomson DTH 3300 DVD player.

SCRATCH?
I first ordered this title a few months back and when i eventually recieved the disc from Amazon.fr on opening the packaging, disc 1 slipped out from the spindle and a clear scratch eteched the underside surface...

i started to play the disc and on load up it stalled for around 5 minutes on the tele.fr screen (with the counter slowly etching up the seconds).. once going into the menu screen, and pressing PLAY movie, or going into chapter selection and selecting any scene, the chapter was not played instantaneously (as normal), but instead stalled for a further 5 minutes or so, while the subtiles would appear broken and iterspursed with the chapter selection screen..

so obviously i decided to send the disc back for a replacement thinking it was soley due to the noticable scratch on the disc.

A SECOND CHANCE:
After a wait for another month (dont ask..).. i've recently had the opportunity to open up a new french r2 disc set and this time the discs were on their spindle and when i had a look at the underside, NO scratch marks were seen, the disc looked crystal clear, without a spec.

I put disc one into the player again, and guess what? same stalling load up of menu screen, and same stalling load up of scene selection/movie play.

FURTHER:
i took disc 1 out of my thomson dvd player and headed up stairs to my desk top to see if the same occurred on my PC dvd rom (advent, ATI dvd player).
NO such stalling on menu screen load up or movie play.
BUT: the subtitles were not selectible as if the disc had not been encoded correctly, as opposed to the soundtrack which could readily be switched.

So, i'd like to ask:
1. whether anyone else on these forums has experienced the same incompatibilty issues with the disc for their Thomson DTH 3300 or any other such issues for other DVD players?
2. Could I have recieved a bad batch of pressed ITMFL? How can i check?
3. Are their any websites documenting compatibility issues of certain discs with certain players? Because if their are, and i have indeed a normally pressed disc, i think Thomson owners should be aware of this.

cheers for your time.

This reply probably won't be of much help, as I don't have the Thompson player, but here goes... Basically the same problem occurs on my JVC 511 player (stalling at the tele.fr screen), but after retrying a few times it works fine.

Fast forwarding or pausing the movie also causes problems (this also occured on my Pioneer 717), i.e. it locks up, but pressing play or menu gets out of this.

Also, Le pacte des loups menus don't work on the JVC, but work fine on the Pioneer and on my dvd-rom (movie plays fine though).

Very strange seeing as they're both French releases and have never had any trouble with any other disks from any region.

Matt.

As a worst-case scenario, why not get a refund for the French edition and order the Criterion (by all accounts so far, the best version with the best transfer and the most substantial extras - right up to including the short story that inspired the film in a 48-page booklet!) for a smidgen over £20 from DVD Box Office?

a good idea narshty which i had considered, but the 30 day amazon.fr return policy has since expired.

As annoying as this problem is, if i ever intend on upgrading (or rather changing) my player, this problem may not occur - which is something i'm counting on.

does anyone else know of any other incompatibilty issues for the french disc with their players, such as matt_uk?

The return is expired - even if the disc is faulty? Doesn't sound likely.

How good's your French - will you be able to argue this out?

well the reason for all the delays in the first place through trying to obtain an exchange was because my french is awful! and there after sales/returns department isn't the most prompt!

Had the same problem on my Hitachi DV-P250E with both the French release and the Tartan 2 disc too! Both worked fine in my mates Samsung 511 and in two DVD ROM set ups, I think it is a player incompatibility issue.
