I am looking forward to this one, for some reason.
Carlisle have had a fairly big squad clear out and brought some decent sounding replacements in, including a USA international. I'm going to stick my neck out and say ... ooh, top ten finish! Going to take in the friendly w/ Newcastle on Saturday 'cos I'm having to miss the first home game due to a wedding ...
We'll miss our annual tussles with Leeds but maybe we'll see them again soon?
What are your hopes, dreams and fears this season?

What are your hopes, dreams and fears this season?
Hoping that Saints will hit the ground running this time & be pushing for a top two place from the off. Now that there's some stability at the club I hope they just get their heads down & get on with it.
Last season was the first one in ages that I've really enjoyed - hope this ome is as exciting :)
Signings have been made by most, more to come for sure, and pre-seasons now in full flow.
For my lot, Brighton, most are feeling optimistic on improving on last season's performance. Poyet clearly knows what he wants with several players, including some who cost us a bit, on their way.
Looking forward to the big kick-off at Swindon in a few weeks. Nicking their captain from them this Summer should add some spice to the occasion.
Right now I fancy us for the top 10. I think we'll need a few more decent signings to challenge higher than that. Poyet is still hunting so I expect our squad to be improved in the next week or two.
Southampton will be automatically promoted I think

Would be great if Brighton could kick off the 11/12 season at Falmer, in the Championship

Bring it on!
PS. What's your shiny new kit all about, looks more like it should be in the tour de france? Shame we wont see spider-Brez too.
Southampton will be automatically promoted I think
I agree and think they must be early favorites (along with Swindon)
Been a hell of a lot of going, and not a lot of coming at Charlton so dont really no what to think about our chances yet.
On the negative side I would not be surprised if at the first sign that we wont go up administration might be beckoning.
On the positive side maybe Curbs will win the Euro lottery and come back and buy/save us:nuts:
There was already a thread for this so I have merged them.

I fancy a good season for the Terriers this time around, got a pretty good set up now.
Really happy with the signings Alan Irvine has made this pre season.
Key ones
Clinton Morrison
Neil Mellor
Paul Heffernan
Chris Sedgewick
Gary Teale
Daniel Jones
All improvements on the players released at the end of last season. Competition for places at last up front. Barring injuries I can see us challenging at the top.
I agree and think they must be early favorites (along with Swindon)
I don't think we are anywhere near favourites. From last seasons first 11 have lost:
Paynter,
Greer,
Ward (gone back to Bolton),
Ferry (gone back to celtic),
Derby(gone back to liverpool)
We have brought in Prutton and Rose, but we have to replace Paynters goals and Greer's experience.
Though there are hopefully more coming in before the kick off
Can't believe I had to look up what Quasi meant. I thought this a thread on a sport I never heard of, all along it's football. Too many beers :brickwall

Sheff Wed issued w/ a winding up order.
Looks like it will be paid before court. Fingers crossed.
Game on!
Off to sunny Swindon today and I can't wait. We have a couple of key players out and given Swindon's good form last year, I'd take a point.
Enjoy the first day of the season everyone - always has a special feel this one.

Well done. Your midfield bossed ours today. That's where the game was won and lost.
That said, neither team will be promoted on performances like that! But its the first game of the season, both teams will get better. Last season we lost 5-0 to the pikeys. So its an improvement this time round.

Wouldn't say crap. Played good football at a good tempo to go 2-0 up, agreed we lost our momentum after that and became sloppy.
Dagenham did not play too bad they just had nothing up front to really worry us.
Gonna see a few games like that this season I reckon.
We are bottom of the league!! Not too dissapointed, think Posh will be up there come the end of the season. Looking forward to playing Yeovile next weekend, my 1st game of the season!
Our best midfielder from last season was left on the bench yet, lots of rumours linking him with Southampton.
Only positive of the day was that the former England #1 also let 3 goals in!!

Adam Stansfield, Exeter striker and former Yeovil striker, died tonight. He'd been fighting bowel cancer.
He scored the winner for Yeovil in the FA Trophy final back in 2002. Then afterwards while being interviewed live on sky said "I've come ******* miles for this" Yeovil had signed Adam from a really small non-league club called Elmore earlier that season.
Thanks for the memories Adam!

I notice that The Sun (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/3090311/Opposition-2-Bournemouth-0.html) has now taken to calling us 'Opposition' or 'South Coast Club' due to the club chief banning press photographers from the ground :/

Blimey Yateyob, I thought your lot were having a bad week but Coppell seems to have outdone you by walking out on City already!
Keith Millen has been appointed manager on a 3 year deal apparently. mwahahaha.
Made my day today once I seen Coppell couldn't walk. He made some quote about not being passionate about the job which made me laugh!
Rumours circling that Trollope is in trouble too, we have a woeful record like 2 wins out of the last 20 games. Think the Chairmans had him in for a 'chat'. A defeat to Yeovile could be the end of him! Bristol football a bit of a shambled at the minute!

You drink in the sportsman before all home games m8
I was at the yeovil game and got throughly ****** on by the weather again we looked a bit off pace and yeovil had the lion share of the game in the 1st half bit better in the 2nd half ....just about deserved 3pts from all accounts rovers played better against exeter. So Southampton on saturday and the possible return of rickie lambert we will do well to get a point but with Jo getting 2 in 2 and hoskins of the mark hopefully they will start banging in the goals. We need a Big target man to mix it up a bit ....devon white you still availabe m8
Another game another disappointment, this time at franchise. I'm sure we can turn it around but last seasons Wembley appearance is looking like a blip!
I see the Saints have sacked Pardew. Any Saints fans about like to shed light on that one as it seems strange to me. Maybe it was only beating Rovers 4-0 that was the final straw :)

Nope, it's a bit baffling to us as well - it's no secret that AP & Nicola Cortese haven't exactly seen eye to eye over everything so I presume that's got something to do with it, but who knows. Given the chequered past of Saints replacing managers this move doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.
Maybe they've already got someone else lined up?

Wonder if Pardew has been going over the side with players wives again as he was alledgedly doing at West Ham & Charlton ? TBH if he could just keep it in his trousers then I'd have him back at the Boleyn like a shot. Least he shows some passion.

Very disappointed that Ian Harte has left Carlisle for Reading. He was actually a bit of a liability at the back and his lack of pace will be terribly exposed in a higher league so he'll probably spend the twilight of his career on the bench, at best. But he was a senior squad figure for us and without his set-piece goals last year we would've gone down.

Its a funny old game. Last Monday I came in to work and although we were mid table we will still only 6 points away from the top. This week we are still around mid table and only 5 points away from the bottom:help:

Too true!! Come on you Royals tonight, keep the 82ers rooted to the bottom of the league.
Cannot beleive Wednesday are 4th. I think we have only played well for 90 mins in one game this season (Hartlepool, where the scoreline flattered us).
Irvine getting a bit of stick on the forums for negative tactics. I think they need to be a little more positive, Jermaine Johnson should help in that respect now he is fit.
Poyet is losing it big-time...
Charlton 0 - 4 Albion
Peterborough 0 - 3 Albion
...results are getting worse - I think he's living on borrowed time now.
Odd season. Brighton aside the league is so inconsistent so far. We have been poor, conceding goals and yet are still only 5 points off the playoffs and a point off the bottom.
Seems anyone can win the league or get relegated.
Trollope sacked today. Sad day but I think the right decision. He'd been here just over 5 years and was the 7th longest serving manager in the FL. The most succesful manager we've had in the last 20 years and my time following Rovers. Some amazing memories of FA cup quarter finals, trips to Millenium Stadium and Wembley, beating c*ty with him in charge.
No idea who we appoint now. Who wants to take on a club with no money and poor facilities.

Taken over on New Years Eve, and Parky sacked today:
Charlton boss Phil Parkinson sacked
By Richard Cawley
CHARLTON boss Phil Parkinson has been sacked following the 4-2 home defeat by Swindon yesterday.
The South London Press understands that the Addicks manager was told that he had been axed this morning.
New owners Michael Slater and Tony Jimenez acted after Monday night's 4-2 home reverse to Swindon.
Parkinson leaves Charlton fifth in League One, just three points off second place, but their slump in form has come at the wrong time as Slater and Jimenez assessed whether he was the right man long-term to lead the Addicks.
Charlton had not won at home since November 20 - a run of four matches - and have taken four points from a possible 18.
To be honest I think if we had the money to sack/pay him off we would have done a while ago.
Maybe my wildest dreams we now come true and :notworthyCurbs:notworthy will come back:nuts:
EDIT - Story now updated on official site:
Parkinson departs
Posted on: Tue 04 Jan 2011
Matt Wright reports
The Charlton board announced on Tuesday that manager Phil Parkinson, assistant manager Tim Breacker and first-team coach Mark Kinsella have left the club with immediate effect.
Charlton chairman Michael Slater said: "Clearly, improvement is needed on the field. The team has not won in the league since November and recent performances have simply not been good enough.
"Last night's defeat [to Swindon Town] convinced us as a board that change is required now while we are still in the hunt for promotion, and that we must appoint a new manager to give us every chance of going up."
A bit surprised that all 3 have gone as thought that one of them would stay on as a caretaker manager, maybe the new owners already have something lined up?
EDIT 2 - or maybe not as the official site has now added to the above:
The club will announce a caretaker management team in due course.
The board recognises that Phil, Tim and Mark have worked under difficult circumstances for the past two years and would like to thank them for their efforts.
Bit strange that one, thought he was doing a good job in difficult circumstances
Hutchinson sacked as Walsall manager today also!!
Trollope linked with Port Vale but rumours are he turned the job down.
It really is the silly season with all these sackings over the Christmas season.
Bit strange that one, thought he was doing a good job in difficult circumstances
If you just looked at the table and our results then you would say that, however if you have actually sat through a few of our games this season or even last season this would come as no surprise.

I thought it was more a consequence of the takeover than poor results, though looking at the Charlton message boards after last nights humiliation* ( :) ) made me realise he was none too popular with your fanbase.
*makes up for you stuffing us at the County Ground. Though this is the first game we have come from behind to win since Brighton in 2009.
So Denis Wise then, assuming it is. Did well for us, got us fit and organised. Problem is that it was possibly Gus Poyet that was the brains behind the operation...

I was never Parky's biggest fan by any means and the football last year was dire, but I'm a bit worried by this. We're not in the world's worst position and have a shot at going up, but unless the new board have someone lined up and in soon we'll be in danger of not even making the play-offs. That said, it would be harder to make the change if he did take us up.
I can't comment a huge amount on our displays as I didn't renew my ticket this year (financial reasons), but the times I've seen us on TV I think we've always lost!
Not liking the rumours of Dennis Wise (would Varney take him? Took Dowie I guess...), absolutely no idea of a realistic alternative. I think I'll do something drastic if a clown like Laws got it.
Chrisy Powell confirmed as Charlton boss.
Happy with that from a long suffering fan view, time will tell if he will get the quick response the new owners hint that they want.
Eddie Howe off to Burnley?
After our (BHAFC) raid for Noone from Plymouth, Ryan Harley has been left out of the Exeter squad for their game tonight, so hope he's heading along the coast too soon.
Dive Dive Dive, all aboard the Swindon submarine....We're going down at this rate, particularly if/when Austin goes.
Even Rovers (last win 16th Oct) tonked us.
And thoroughly enjoyable it was too SPB!! :)
Wanted: Two strikers. Please apply to the Save us from Relegation Appeal, County Ground, Swindon.
Well that was one of the more bizarre refereeing mistakes I have seen. Gillespie scores for Col U, referee rules it out, talks to his assistant, gives the goal, teams line up for the re-start, 4th official comes onto the pitch and consults with the ref, ref disallows goal and re-starts game with a drop ball on the edge of the Charlton box!
Turns out that as Gillespie put the ball in the net the referee had blown his whistle anticipating an offside flag which never came, so the drop ball was the correct decision albeit it followed one that was completely wrong. And then, of course, we concede and lose a game we deserved to get something out of.
Bloody stupid sport!
I was watching this on Sky Sports News last night and it seemed to me as if the whole incident took about 5 minutes to sort out, it sounded like the ref just lost it big time, why would he blow for an offside when the flag wasn't up ?

The ref did blow before Gillespie shot, but to be honest and even as a Charlton fan he looked on side to me.
Thing is once he has blown play has to stop so what looked like a good goal can not stand. If he had left it at that and given us a few kick, it would have been another great example of refereeing at this level, however what happened afterwords brought it down to another level completely :brickwall
On the plus side for us (and with apologias to loftus!) that's two out of two for Chrissy Powell's Red Army :)
Having seen it again on SSN it seems Mooney's dummy caught out not only the Charlton defence but also the ref. If Mooney had touched it Gillespie would have been offside, as he let it run through his legs Gillespie was well onside - which is presumably what the linesman told him when he was consulted.
Agreed that once he blew the whistle he had no choice. If he had just given Gillespie offside we'd have chalked it down to yet another poor decision - and we've been both the beneficiary and victim of enough of those as have most other teams. As it was he managed to reduce it to pure farce.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/c/colchester_united/9385022.stm
The goal is to be "probed" apparently, not that anything will come out of it. But the ref should be taken of League One duties for a month or so after that.
If that had happened in a Premier League game with a "big club" there would have been hell to pay.
Bye bye Danny Wilson. Great season last year, genuinely disappointed it came to this.
Paul Hart is the name of the man most likely. Meh.
Bye Bye Dave Penney. A disastorous 13 games but I believe the board made a massive mistake giving him the job.
Good luck Stu Campbell, do the impossible and keep us in L1 and you'll go down as an all time Rovers legend!!
Haven't posted on this thread much, mainly because I'm a Southampton fan and it appears that we're not well liked! Quite understandably as there are a large amount of arrogant tossers that appear to think we should be winning every game 12-0!!
Anyway as we go in to the late part of the season the news from Yateyob is good for us as Brizzle will have quite a say in the end of season run in - they play Bournemouth twice, Hudders, Peterborough and us.
My prediction is that Orient will sneak in to the play-offs in place of MK Dons (or possibly Bournemouth, but I hope not). I think Brighton have the league sewn up, I was expecting them to have a bad patch but all credit to them they keep getting result. I'd like to think that we will finish 2nd and playoff teams will be POSH, Huddersfield, Bournemouth and Orient.
Shorty
We'll win again, don't know where, don't know when, but I know we'll win again some sunny day.

Yup you were unlucky - resolute defending, made couple of chances and your keeper played very well, made some fine stops. If you continue to play like that you should get out of trouble. If we continue to play like that it's play-offs for us!

I'm still confident - the injuries aren't helping but c'est la vie; would be nice if MK Dons could do us a favour on Friday though, just to release a tiny smidge of pressure.

So what are your views on Trollope, was he hopeless without an experienced DOF, or did the cash situation screw him over. He has been linked to the managers job here, probably unfounded but ....
Not a lot of consolation I know, but the Rovers fans were great today, particularly the fancy dress conga.
Game was very much like a practice match. The defending for both our goals was non-existant and one we conceded came from a cross, just like all the other ones we haven't been able to defend all season long.

I loved Trollope for what he had done here but his time was up. His style of football was quite negative but his major downfall were his signings, people like Mark Wright, Darryl Duffy, Dominic Blizzard, Andy Williams all cost a transfer free, were on decent money and were absoultely CRAP. Some of them got 3 years deals on £3k per week and have maybe played 10 games for us!
So Lennie also has to take some blame for the poor signings. With a DofF Trollope might be ok.
I've heard we've got Danny Wilson lined up!! Sounds like we're doing a swap.
Thanks for the info. Negative football is what ****** the fans off regarding Paul Hart - 1 up front at home, etc. Looks like Trollope may not be the shoe in we thought following a change of chairman. Pretty sure he's in the running, he's been spotted at a few games now (as has Richard Money at one or two).
Danny Wilson is a good manager. Even if he is ex-1982er. I'm sure you know as much about him as I do. Plays good football. Last season got everything pretty much spot on even down to the loan players. This season seemed the exact opposite. Losing our two main goalscorer and also our main defender and captain, and replacing them with crud is only going to end one way. Was this all down to him, or boardroom meddling? Who knows.
Rumours here are Wilson is still in the running but the club have also approached Kevin Blackwell. I see Mickey Adams got sacked tonight too....
Our manager to be announced at the start of next week.
Someone here mentioned Trollope wasn't being considered for the Swindon job.

As yateyob knows, I believe that Danny Wilson is a great manager at this level.
There is no way Wilson happily let Greer (main defender, captain) come to us - your board decided to take our cash. And, when they did, Swindon remained bullish that we had taken the old war-horse and you had better youngsters in the ranks. A fair few called that one wrong, I think.
When Hart came down to us, your boys were playing well and most would rank you in the top 5 teams we had to play - the table suggests we caught you on a good day maybe.
Di Canio for Swindon would be interesting (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/swindon_town/9482709.stm)

That's one way of putting it. As a fellow fan said that it may well end in a car crash, but it would be an exciting journey!
George Burley alegedly in the mix too.

Not overly excited! Would of preffered Di Canio but I think Buckle is the safe bet.

Long Term Stability v Short Term Excitement. I guess we'll see who the winner is!
