I need to get round to the like of Breaking Bad and Mad Men but I'm useless and the amount of episodes needed to catch up is daunting. Any recommendations of shows in their first series/just a series or so to catch up with?

I'm really enjoying Persons Unknown and enjoyed Gravity. I like something a bit different.

If its only the 1 series then Spartacus and justified for me, if you can push to 2 series then sons of anarchy.

you should really try and watch breaking bad at least their are not loads of episodes per series

Only 1 episode aired so far. Based on a Stephen King story.

But I second the Breaking Bad comment, really doesn't take long to get caught up and it is brilliant!

I just watched the first episode and spent it thinking that I knew the female lead from somewhere. It was only afterwards that I realised she voiced Elena in the Uncharted games on the PS3.

I thought The Glades looked like it could be alright as well. Pretty formulaic crime show, but the lead looks to have an interesting character.

Hawaii Five-O looks entertaining too.

Woeful would be my best description. it's like teen drama with cops, who of course are all young and beautiful (well 'ish but you get the idea)

As mentioned above, the first episode of "Haven" was really dull & offered nothing new to the genre. A shame as the leading lady is a cutie.

Still to give "The Gates" a go. Waiting to see if it gets a decent run of episodes before inevitably getting the boot.

The best by far looks to be The Event... seems to be a mix of the action in 24 & the mystery Lost. The performances look great, but trailers can be deceiving!

And I'm not too sure about The Gates. Judging from the trailer it almost looks like The Vampire Diaries crossed with Desperate Housewives... in other words my worst nightmare!

Haven sounds like a nice idea, but I've never been able to catch on to SyFy shows due to the pretty much guaranteed poor acting/overacting. But i'll give them all a chance :)

Watched the first episode of The Gates this morning, not bad but going to have to run it past the OH to see if she wants to watch it before I continue (already had to tell her I wasn't going to watch anymore legend of the seeker since the cancellation (she's only watched the first few of season 1), didn't have the heart to tell her I'd watched both series on the train).

I liked it, I originally wanted to see it as a **** take after seeing the poster campaign in one of the disney parks last week, but it was a pretty good show.

I feel TV is lacking some good Sci-Fi, Have i missed something or is anything on the horizon?

The Bear
14-07-2010, 14:38
Warehouse 13 is ok, but as a fairly average flatline level. They've just started season 2.

Eureka is much the same as Warehouse 13. Pretty much ok with very occasional standout moments.

Caprica was much the same for the first season. It has the pedigree to get better though.

V is decent and picked up towards the end of the first season. Not much sci-fi in it other than stuff on the alien ships though.

So not really much that stands out at the minute. I assume you've seen Battlestar Galactica? That's been the best thing in recent times IMO.

What about Fringe? Plenty of forums love for it.

daboy3000

Seen Battlestar, liked it. W13 is just too cheesy, its like buffy or some other tripe that i've seen. I couldn't get into fringe, whats the low budget show where they trap all the monsters and keep them in a building, the main characters a woman with an English accient? That was ok for a low budget.

What I'm looking for is a Star Trek next gen replacement, big budget, loads of action and aliens etc. Have no interest in vampires etc.

Looks like it has the possibility to go the way of Lost or go the way of Flashforward. looks like some good stuff coming up.

Saw a good trailer for a lawyer show if you like that sort of thing Outlaw with Jimmy Smits in.

I loving Pillars of the Earth, but everything else they've shown over the summer has been a bit meh.

This was hammered home when I finally got around to watching some of The Mentalist which I'd given up on originally for being a bit bland and its head and shoulders above the summer fare

I expect some of the networks will see how the Pilots do before picking up the show full time.. Covert Affairs, The Gates and Haven are already on, but a lot of the others i was interested in aren't showing their pilot till next month or the month after..

Not as good as 4400 but how about

Fringe
Stargate Universe - they've tried (unsuccessfully) their best to rip off BSG

i loved SGU. Because of it, i gave SG-1 another chance despite not really thinking it was good the first time around. I only got about 6 episodes into the first season before getting fed up of it though, SGU just seems so much better.

Fringe was ok, but there was something about it it that made it a bit ****, is it British made? I just can't watch most British Sci-Fi, they all seemed to be aimed at kids and families, ie Dr Who, Torchwood, Primeval etc. Same with the Buffy series and True Blood etc, I know loads of people like this stuff but in my opinion its all a load of cak!!

I can deal with bad acting, but bad writing really turns me away.

I tried about 5 episodes of SGU but it just didn't go anywhere and the lack of any action just didn't keep me entertained. Show me some Aliens, i don't want to use my imagination, i want to see little green men fighting it out with lasers and spaceships!!!

I enjoy Eureka. It's very futuristic science based and is very likeable if a little throwaway. It has had a couple of standout moments but is always good-decent. Currently in it's 4th season. The first two can be picked up really cheap.

True Blood made for families? You haven't watched it much have you..? It's is about as far away from being family friendly as you can possibly get and is certainly not badly written!

There are aliens in SGU on quite a few occasions infact, though unlike SG-1 they don't all look exactly like humans. The show is more about the enemy within though, how a group of strangers react when cooped up with one another for months on end.

Fringe is on the edge of family friendly shows and True Blood is about as far away as you can get.

Fringe is J J Abrams show and is excellent. True Blood is HBO and is very adult indeed...

Both worth watching...

Looks good, but not scheduled till next year as a mid season replacement. Thats normally, though not always, the kiss of death.

ABC paid a fortune for it and had to guarantee it would get a full season and be shown. So Perry will at least get his show on the air and get to finish a whole season. Bit of a weird one for ABC to bid so high and be contracted so heavily.

Er are you sure you have actually watched Fringe (which just gets better and better IMO) or any of the other shows, for a start it doesnt even look like its made over here, and a lot of the episodes are not for familys. Got bored of True Blood my self but do you and the family sit down and watch a Spartacus/True Blood double bill;)

i loved SGU. Because of it, i gave SG-1 another chance despite not really thinking it was good the first time around. I only got about 6 episodes into the first season before getting fed up of it though, SGU just seems so much better.

I would give SG1 another go, I recently sat and watched the first season again and while it started weak i really fell in love with it again and it took me back to a time when shows were fun. Granted it is different to SGU but SG1 certainly got very good.

When I was refering to family viewing i meant the British stuff, must have worded it wrong LOL, and don't get me started on Spartacus, i've seen better acting in soft porn!!

Fringe is ok but I only managed 40 mins of True Blood as the acting made be want to stick daggers in my ears!

Anyone else watch Melissa & Joey? It started last week on ABC Family and stars Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence. The creators must be hoping that nobody has seen 'Who's the Boss?', because the plot is exactly the same!

I've seen worse shows but the "studio audience" is annoying and it's pretty obvious how the show is going to play out.

I watched a bit on YouTube and for half the time I thought it was a kids show. I'm filing it in the "**** US sitcom" folder.

Watching the trailer for the new Hawaii Five-O series, and comparing it to the original, I have to ask the question . . . can we not have a show that portrays characters in positions of authority as sober, reasonable adults, and not wisecracking children?

Now one seems to talk about it on the forum but "The Closer" is a brilliant cop show that is just that. The way the crimes are solved is realistic and the way she sometimes (the show doesn't do the same thing every week) get the people to confess is genius. Plus all the characters are well drawn and interesting.

Amen! It's superb in every department. Six seasons in and it's still going strong.

You have to give your heroes flaws to see them over come them, the wisecracking is for people like me who like to laugh at the silliest things.

Just watched the first ep of Melissa & Joey. Pretty weak, but I've still got a bit of :luv: for Melissa Joan Hart so will give it a go at least until everything else starts back.

^^ Is 'mince' Cockney rhyming slang or just means being crap? ^^

I've just started on S1 of Stargate: Atlantis and it's not as bad as I remember first time around (though I guess it would be unwatchable if it didn't have the awesome Rodney in it).

No idea - a Scottish mate of mine uses it (to mean crap) all the time, so it's kind of invaded the way we all speak.

Yes totally agree The Borgias is excellent great performance so far from Irons and Sean Harris's character is brilliant

 I forgot to mention that anytime they display an aerial shot of Rome in the show, i'm looking for Ezio leaping around the rooftops.

There actually is an assassin in the show who has quickly become one of my favourite characters, but he's as far removed from Ezio as you could get.

Anyone tried Traffic Light? (formerly Mixed Signals).

I liked the look of it from the trailer, and it's decent enough to keep watching. The characters are interesting/funny enough and the cast seems to have a good dynamic going.
