Anyone else seen this new Louie C.K show? If not, this is the best new show you aren't watching.

It's like Curb Your Enthusiasm with a dash of Jim Jarmusch. Plus it has Seinfeld type stand-up sections, but they aren't locked to the beginning and the end. Very funny stuff.

Saw Louie on The Daily Show and both he and the bits from the show they had were pretty funny so I have been meaning to check it out at some point.

Just checked out the first episode, really liked it, far more so in fact than Lucky Louie, which was good but somewhat strangely sterile, maybe due to its studio-bound nature. Was somewhat reminiscent in tone of Annie Hall (there is the Seinfeld comparison to make but this felt far more raw), with the NYC setting and the jazz music and the social alienation and flights of fancy etc, although there were clear differences in situation and character. Not really feeling the Curb comparisons as this does have the sense of heightened sitcom reality, and the quick cuts of conversations rather than the excruciating minutiae. Hope he has a hit with this one cos he's a good guy, always liked him in interviews and on Howard Stern, and what stand-up I've seen.

This is a bit of a mixed bag for me. I like it when he is interacting with women or doing his stand up and he bumbling along, but when he is talking with his friends it feels uncomfortable and the laughs are absent.

When Ricky Gervais rolled out, I groaned because I don't particularly like him but those darn Americans keep giving him jobs. However the Dr. was very funny because he was so inappropriate, especially the in and out movement which made me

Good one this week. Great to see Pamela Adlon (aka. Cougar Smurf aka. Bobby Hill from King of the Hill) in it. I suppose she's going to be the love interest for the season. If the show even does that.

Just thought I'd mention I'm enjoying this too. It isn't as laugh-out-loud funny as Curb, it's actually pretty dark in most cases. The whole episode where he goes to Birmingham was especially grim!
As mentioned, the stand-up scenes generally aren't funny. I wouldn't mind if the episodes were longer, but they seem to fly by - we're looking at around 12 minutes storyline and 8 minutes of (usually unrelated) stand-up :S

It looks great in HD too, which is a bit unusual/unnecessary for a comedy I guess!

On the strength of this, I went back and had a look at the original sit com, lucky louie, which is also pretty excellent, if anyone wants more. Its an out and out sitcom but definitely crosses lines other sitcoms won't go near.

This is a real gem, isn't it? I read that FX gave Louis ~$200k to make the pilot; he accepted it on the condition that he had all the control. They wired him the money; he made a pilot with it and sent it back to them. No network help or approval. He writes, directs, edits and stars in all the episodes, which is impressive.

(I also love the theme tune, which is a cover by Stories of a Hot Chocolate song called Brother Louie... or rather, it seems to be a re-recording by Stories singer Ian Lloyd, as the lyrics change from "cry" to "die" near the end.)

The swell thing about this show is its unpredictability, in terms of style. "Dr Ben" couldn't be more different from "Poker", the latter being the segment that sealed the deal for me: funny, serious, thought-provoking, all joined together with no seams. It all seems so raw and so personal, which is to be expected I suppose.

This week's "Dogpound" episode was another change: one longer film which changed direction as it went. Loved that scary stoner guy ("Unless you're too busy wearing those shorts"), and the bizarre half-heard dialogue on the TV when Louie woke up the next day.

Original and hilarious stuff. More of this please.

I think some parts of this are better than Curb, it seems so much more personal. I love Curb and the plotting of that is still better, but this has more heart to it.

The best bit of the show so far for me, was the scene during the stand-up gig, where he calls the woman out for being a 'bad person'. After saying the worse things imaginable to her he then completely breaks down exactly why she is wrong and a total bitch. That's clearly pure wish fulfilment on Louie's part. But then, even though he wrote it, he doesn't give himself the pay off where he gets to **** her.

I think this is the best "comedy" on US TV at the moment. The Bully episode was sublime, from the talk by (and back to!) his dad, through the firendly but menacing bullying, and then the unexpected stalking and the even more unexpected heart-to-heart. What a fantastic show this is.

Personally I found this the least funny bit of the series - it's not responding to a heckler, it's just calling someone names and has no wit or imagination. It seems to be a US thing to deal with hecklers in that manner, when their UK counterparts often insult the heckler in a pretty witty way, US comedians just tend to swear at the heckler.

Well, that's the end of the season. Utterly brilliant stuff. Touching (especially at the end), surreal (the anchorwoman!), cringeworthy (the club), and funny. So, so funny:He starts going 'HCCCCCCCCCH,' and now I know he's spitting past his dick into his own **** and ****, literally 18 inches away from my daughter's little face. That was the culmination of a stand-up bit that had me in tears of laughter.

Louis has commented (scroll down) (http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/whats-alan-watching/posts/louie-gym-night-out-here-stands-a-man?m=k) on Alan Sepinwall's blog about the series, partly in response to the earlier discussion (in which he also participated (again, look in the comments) (http://www.avclub.com/articles/god,44549/)) about different actors playing his mother. It gives an insight into what's going on behind the scenes and in Louis' head.

(Incidentally, the Sepinwall and AV Club reviews have been really good reads.)

hadn't seen this show before but it's a firm favourite, now. watched lucky louis, too. an odd show but very entertaining. the decision for it to be a studio sitcom, but filmed like it was a sketch jarred at first, but after that it showed a lot of promise. i have a huge crush on pamela adlon, now. she's like a foul mouthed tiny demi moore.

his stand up/comedy is really honest and unashamedly personal. i think it'd be funny to see his kids reaction to how much smack he talks about them, when they're older.

I'm watching it every week still, and every week I'm blown away. "Duckling" was just the latest in a long line of brilliant episodes. I read that Louis actually filled FX in on what he was doing for this one, as he needed more budget; normally his arrangement means that he doesn't tell them anything until he submits the episode. (Apparently he also consulted a bit to get the Fox News show on board for "Come On, God".)

This, and Breaking Bad, are untouchable highlights of the summer. Nothing else on TV comes close.

Nice statement from his website: https://buy.louisck.net/statement

He reckons he's cleared about $200k after costs ($370k if you don't include the cost of the show, which was covered by ticket sales). I would imagine that figure would rise quite substantially over the next few weeks. Yes, there are people who would torrent it, but there always will be. This experiment, along with the one Radiohead did with In Rainbows show that if you charge a reasonable price for something the majority of people will purchase it.

$200K after it being up just a week is staggering. He hasn't even really started plugging it yet - maybe he will decide he doesn't need to.

If you've already got a huge fanbase, that is. I'd love this model to work for more artists, but the two high-profile experiments we've seen so far involved fairly well-known people. I wonder how less well-known bands etc do with sales on Bandcamp and so on.

It's fantastic that he's giving away what he is, he could easily keep 3/4 of that but has given to charity/his staff instead.

I think it's safe to say that all of his standup will be given away like this from now on. Though sadly that won't stop the torrenting. There was an idiot on a popular torrent site who ripped it (And who Louis commented on) but thankfully he was largely shouted down on the comments (Though it didn't stop about 300k people from downloading it) because he claimed to be so 'conflicted' about it. It's remarkable that something that's on sale for $5 would still be largely pirated.
