just for a bit of fun and nostalgia.
i have no idea what time any of these started. i just know that for me, the theme tunes generaly meant BED!!! ha ha
soap - i've never seen an episode but the theme as stuck with me all this time. i used to think that it must've been quite a rude programme, going by the speed in which i was ushered to bed when it started.

tales of the unexpected - i was glad to be sent to bed for this one. infact, if i could, i would have avoided the opening like the plague, as the opening to this used to scare the crap out of me lol

Yeah, me too, but the invention of video meant I could finally see the awesomeness that was Soap. Best show of its era, like Arrested Development if theyd done it in the 70's as a soap opera spoof.
Both of the ones you mentioned signaled the wooden hill for me.
Also Hill Street Blues and the first couple of seasons of LA Law.
I was never allowed to watch The Sweeney as a kid, so this meant immediate bed time.
Great theme tune, and cool opening titles.

The Professionals was a special 'stay up late' treat though !
It's a punchy, dynamic theme, but just take a look at that 80's datacentre !

Same here, although i was usually allowed to watch it before being ushered off to bed at the end. I would kick off big time if I missed my fix of Roach, Burnside and Cryer.:notworthy

Sapphire & Steel - I sometimes got to watch it though (presumably when I got a little older) and can definitely remember being freaked out by it a couple of times. The Young Ones was another that was on a bit too late for me :(

London's Burning on a Sunday night as well.

God, I loved that show. Wonder if i watched an episode now it would ruin my memory of it?....

I'm scared of looking at it now as well. I think Jessica Tate was my first full on telly crush :( I daren't look now...
soap was ace, especially the theme music :-)
and as for TotU - i'm with the OP on the scary opening titles. however i did get round to watching some as an older kid and it wasn't too bad. a bit like twilight zone.

The Moomins.
It wasn't on late, but the theme tune put you to sleep (and then you had nightmares after watching the show):(

I was never allowed to watch
The Professionals was a special 'stay up late' treat though !
Exactly what I was going to post!
I remember having a major strop when I wasn't allowed to watch it one week. Must have spent the entire episode in bed crying/sulking. Now I have kid of my own I can sfely say they wont be doing the same. Sorry mum!

For some reason Tales of the Unexpected has a resonance in the context of bedtime, but it's from when I was really little (And if I read the first post...). The Equaliser as well.

South bank show = bed.
 Yeah especially a sunday night which meant you had to get to bed for school in the morning
I used to love watching that's life when I was a nipper, I think I was allowed to stay up late too for it :)
Only ever remember week nights Mon - Thur and was years until I could tell the time and found out they had been fooling me on Tue & Thurs. It was always the end of Coro and Emmerdale but Emmerdale was on 30 mins earlier

Never wanted to stay up for this as a kid but it was a cut off for me...
When I was six is was the BBC news at six. In other words watch Thundercats, Neighbours then go to bed.
The most memerable was Twin Peaks. Was aload to watch the theme at the start then I had to get out of the room faster than the French.
I can't remember any theme tunes that meant bed but I do remember once being allowed to stay up and watch Cagney & Lacey which my mum watched. My dad must have been on a work trip so my mum kept me up for company. I only every seen one episode.

Howard's Way for me. Not bedtime, but it signalled the end of the weekend and the realisation that I hadn't done my homework. That theme still gives me the chills even now.
From the youtube poster: :D
Crappy nighttime soap from when I was a kid, the music used to haunt me as we always had to go to bed for school the next day and you knew the weekend was over.

First thing that came into my mind when seeing the thread title!

I only really remember Sunday evenings on ITV (LWT?) when I was really young. Football late afternoon into the early evening, then SuperGran & Knight Rider. I had to be in bed before Minder started :(

I can't watch Open All Hours for the very same reason. Depressing.
Haha first thing I saw when I saw the thread title was Tales of the Unexpected, glad to see it in the first post. Also Spitting Image, although if I could push it, South Bank Show was the one!

Do you not think it might be time to change your tag? Or did you miss our sparkling performance in the World Cup?
(Perhaps you were being ironic?)

Poirot on a Sunday night meant it was my last hour of weekend before going to bed. I'd be tucking into a salad sandwich and dreading that bloody music.

The Onedin Line and When The Boat Comes In.
We were glad to go up as well because both programmes looked utter dog****..

I forgot about that tag, it was a direct quote from a post on the official fifa.com messageboards, which I found highly amusing. I would hope that my general standard of English is better than that!

Well I remember going to sleep at night with the distinctive opening saxophone solo of Cagney & Lacey filtering up through from the living room below.
Of course there was the opposite effect as well, the first hearing of the LWT jingle at about six thirty on a Friday evening meant the weekend was here and in those days that meant entertaining telly on ITV, oh how I long for those old days!!!
