New user - looking to upgrade

Hi

I'm looking to make the step up from 'point & click' cameras to a more advanced setup. I've started looking into DSLRs, but am a bit flummoxed by the sheer number of choices available, let alone the interchangable lenses...

Fairly limited budget (certainly no more than £300-400), but absolutely no preference to brand/manufacturer.... Will mainly be taking sport photos, as well as family ones, but am intending to move into amateur portraits in the near future....

Any advice much appreciated.

Well, before the flurry of Canon/Nikon suggestions start, might I propose you look at Olympus' E series of cameras? Really good bang per buck and often over looked.

If you can find a good deal, the E620 is amazing for its size!
