View Full Version : The Official Photo-a-Day for July 2010
Welcome one and all. This will be the sixth year the challenge will have run and the first under the thedigitalfix name.
The idea is simple, to take and post a single photo-a-day, every day for the whole month of July, no exceptions*. That's 31 posted photos. If you have two great photos, choose only one. Don't try and agonise over the small details, try and have some fun again with your camera, whether it's film, digital, point & shoot or DSLR. All are welcome. Try out some stuff you haven't done before, like street photography, shooting from the hip, macro, wildlife, night shots, architecture, flash, infrared, it's all allowed.
*though if you miss a day, don't worry, just carry on the next day.
Shooting digital will obviously give you an instant result for posting online, whereas with film you have to finish the whole roll, get the film processed, printed or scanned... This could take days or a couple of weeks before you get to put something online, unless you process your own film, then the timescale will be much shorter. Again, don't agonise over post processing, that's not what this event is for. Try and get the composition and exposure right in the camera, this is a learning experience.
It is well advisable to be prepared and to map out some idea for photographs in advance as inspiration <s>may</s> will not present itself every day, or time / work / family constraints may prevent you from long days of shooting. Practically everyone has a few days towards the end of the month that were short on ideas. July is a long month, you'll probably realise this by the 21st (or well before!).
To keep a chronological log of photos I have an account with flickr.com (http://www.flickr.com) (the basic account is free), if you keep the uploaded photos to 800 pixels on the largest side then you'll easily get all 31 photos in with the free account. Create a new set and call it "Photo-a-Day July 2010", "PAD2010" or "PAD2k10" or something and I'll link it to your name below. Other people use an online blog like www.photoblogs.org (http://www.photoblogs.org) to host their photos with accompanying comments. Otherwise you can set up a free account with photobucket (http://www.photobucket.com) or even just post individual photos here using imageshack (http://imageshack.us)
The first year we had eight people up for the challenge and it's been steadily rising ever since. Each year has produced some stunning photography (and hopefully giving you guys & gals a better insight into your camera gear & photography in general). So, anyone else up for this... once more? Just sign up below. :D

Now we have the Official Thread running, I'll answer this white glove across the face  :
You have a digital camera Chris!
Shoot that alongside the film. Or are you too chicken? Are you? Cluck cluck /does chicken wing thing
Actually mate, I sold the D-Lux months ago - I've just been uploading old images. I suppose I have the iPhone :|
I might still do it though - it might be a cunning way of getting Mrs B to model for me this year :n0rty:
I will commit or not asap
Might do an instant film one to get the fridge a bit emptier!

Might do an instant film one to get the fridge a bit emptier!
I would do it on FF600 but that would be nearly 80 quid's worth and most of them would be crap!
I might reconsider and give this a go though - instant could work if I can fix my instax mini to give me more choice of film types...
...or iphone maybe?
I need a "twist" - can't be arsed just to take 31 DSLR shots.

I did 2 weeks of daily pics this month pretty effortlessly. But then work, the kids and other matters took over and my photography has become a lot more sporadic. Still, if I don't try, I won't make it. :)

Same here. This'll be good incentive to start shooting again especially now that I'm based in Switzerland - should be fun!

Hi there,
I'm gonna be up for this. Did it a couple of years ago and found it great fun, if bloody tough by the end of the month!
Haven't got round to making a Flickr set for it yet but will post the link when I do.
Roll on July!
Just bought a Canon 50mm prime lens, so will give it a work out next month. Count me in.

Instax Mini 10
The light leak is because this film pack was in my old, sadly deceased, mini 10 - and has been taken out in daylight multiple times trying to work out why it wasn't working. Luckily ebay got me a new mini 10 yesterday.
I'm just trying to work out if I can use a different camera for every day of the month - but it will involve a lot a film fiddling and swapping and I wouldn't be able to post every day.
I was going to iphone, but I think I'll leave it to others
(PS - Apologies for the lack of a Day 1 Robot, they will feature at some point though)

OK, guys, here's my opening shot...
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/moving-pictures/4753234180/" title="PAD2010 Day 1 - I see you baby... by (Moving Pictures), on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4074/4753234180_e25e00a573_b.jpg" width="768" height="1024" alt="PAD2010 Day 1 - I see you baby..." /></a>
I've got a feeling many of my photos are going to come from my cycle to and from work - as that'll be about the only free time I'll get! So look forward to many shots of grey Glasgow. Anyway, thought I'd start with a pic of a bird I saw walking down the street.
Right, I've updated the first post list with all the flickr accounts available so far.
We have 29 people taking part this year.

Better late than never. Had over 400 pictures to go through from Canada Day on Trafalgar Square. This probably won't end up being my favourite. But it's too late to look at more pictures. ;)

OK, so I had planned to take another photo this evening, but I've failed in this so my placeholder stays. Is it bad that I'm already thinking I don't want to use any ideas up when I already have a (not very good but at least there's one) photo in? :D

Just woken up after a night shift and look at the time!!!
Forgot my camera again today, and am now heading out door for some beers. Quick crap ubiquitous self portrait on really old Polaroid 669. It's all a bit of a gunky mess (will need to clean scanner tomorrow!). Keep meaning to do watercolour transfers with this stuff as i can see why it would work perfectly.

Neighbours who have been living in what can only be described as a very large shed (in front of the new looking building and to the right of Schindler's Crane), this week have had a new prefab house delivered. In about three days its gone from concrete slab to two storey frame.
To celebrate getting to roof level a branch and ribbons were attached to the apex.

After yesterday's rather mediocre attempt I was determined to do better today.
Unfortunately, I arrived at the local city farm too late (seems that all the animals go inside for tea, a bath and a bed-time story at 7pm), and having failed at enticing a rebellious lone duck to get close enough to photograph. I was on my way home to take a picture of the contents of my fridge or something else really exciting, when I spied this turtle/tortoise lurking in the bushes. I don't think the yellow colouring is go-faster stripes.

Cracking shots today everyone! Really like Parklife.
So today my youngest got stuck up a tree in our back garden.
True to the spirit of the month, I grabbed the camera before I rescued him!
He actually shouted:

OK, a couple of efforts from me where I've managed not to use my phone! (I - like many others it seems - do like the Hipstermatic app though, and have a feeling it'll be making a showing or two before the month is out...)
Still not particularly chuffed with these though, particularly the one for today.

Finally got the local city farm before the curfew. It was still close to bedtime (6:45pm), the sheep were hiding in a corner hoping to stay up late. When the man came out to shoo the geese and ducks into their hut, the ducks waddled in unison one following the other into their quarters. I wasn't quick enough to capture that, but I did get this rabbit. Next time synchronised duck bedtime!

Downloaded Hipstamatic yesterday and had to use it as my get out shot straight away. Quite pleased with it, though.
Haven't missed a day yet, but have ones from today and the 1st to post process. I was playing cricket today next to the disused power station at Richborough. Perfect opportunity to get the Holga out for some shots of the old towers. I had the camera, film and even some tape to hold the back on and control the light leaks. Then I went to grab the camera from the car and it did not have a take up spool in it :(. I must have nicked it from there to use in another camera. So had to resort to a DSLR shot at home instead which I will PP later.

This was taken looking approximately SSE, using a 60s exposure. The fine white line running diagonally in the centre of the frame is the International Space Station, flying from the west to approximately the SE at 2323hr tonight. You can just see it disappearing behind a bank of cloud and zooming off into the distance.
I also had a good view of an Iridium flare at the same time (different direction though which made life difficult). Sadly my technical skills failed me and I couldn't get a good picture of that. (another time maybe)

"Early Bloomers"
I haven't given up early but have been away since Friday at Wimbledon and then a family wedding up in York so I've only just got around to sorting out the first few photos.
Day one was an iPhone job and I can't for the life of me work out how to get it off the phone. It's probably quite simple really but until I work it out we'll have to start with day 2:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/rustmonster/4764378544/" title="Day 2: Berdych v Djokovic by rustmonster, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4121/4764378544_e2f696f068.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="Day 2: Berdych v Djokovic"></a>
Got last minute tickets I was in the very last row on Centre, right behind the seat was a section for photographers which meant I had to deal with the sound of cameras clicking every five seconds. Made me feel slightly better about having brought me own Camera but also made me ashamed of my pathetic lens!
Day 3 was wedding day:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/rustmonster/4764342948/" title="Day 3: Dr. &amp; Mrs. Honeywell by rustmonster, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4115/4764342948_60854bd8f9.jpg" width="333" height="500" alt="Day 3: Dr. &amp; Mrs. Honeywell"></a>
Standard.
Day 4 will go up soon when I work out which photo of York to go with and I've yet to do anything about today.

I will post up the 4th, its on another camera left at my parents house!
Huge effort for a moderate return for me today.
Not quite happy with it, but I know where I'm headed!

Edit: Might as well say where the effort went! The hearts are from a home-made aperture that went into my Lensbaby composer, the point light source was actually crumpled tinfoil lit from the camera with direct flash. The champers is actually tonic water (tried cider too, but that didn't work either). Tonic water was too flat to give the bubbles I wanted!
Will get it right one day!

Pretty slim pickings for me today. Although the rain broke conveniently as I was cycling home, I didn't really get any shots that I was particularly happy with. Anyway, enough of my insignificant woes. Gonna go with this one for today:

Hey - there's me too!!!
I've seen this done before but never tried it myself. Good idea.
The Bokeh thing is VERY hard to get right. The apperture has to be cut very cleanly - every flaw is magnified for some reason. It works best with tiny point light sources - think fairy lights at the most.
I've played with it quite a bit, but this is the first time on the Lensbaby - I normally use my 50mm f/1.4 with a filter holder on the front.

I thought that today was going to be a washout, but with just half and hour between leaving work and my evening class, I managed to squeeze in some shots in at Glasgow's Necropolis.
Although I've seen the Necropolis from afar many times, I've never actually been in until today - it's a fascinating place, a massive graveyard on a hill in the east end of the city, overlooking the Royal Infirmary and Glasgow Cathedral - so all stages of life catered for (for good measure, these three sites also border a brewery and an ex-cigarette factory, so Glaswegians truly could see to all their lifes' needs within about half a square mile). It harks back the time when Glasgow was the second city of the British Empire so many of the ornate graves and statues are for rich merchants, businessmen, architects and the like from the 1800s.
Conditions were rubbish for photography with the overcast sky giving flat lighting and a blown-out sky in almost every shot. Might return later in the month for more shots, maybe at dawn/dusk, but in the meantime, here's what I got today:

Little box, innit? I like ornate things and this trounces the gold disc (which, as far as gold discs go, is very nice, I'm sure). I like its off centreness also. Its wonderfully lit, too.
Another winner with today's too - I love clocks. Old fashioned clocks, of which Newgate do some very nice replicas.

^ I think its a generic term suggesting that Newgate, as a company, are noted for retro style clocks, so, essentially, they are replica's of clocks from a certain era, rather then a specific design (though they may be that, too).

A bit rushed - trying out the Lensflare app, which I like and may use again before the months up. If a better opportunity presents itself before the witching hour, expect this to be kicked into touch.

A curious one for me today.
While browsing flickr I came accross a group called "what's in your bag?" that just shows the contents of people's bags.
It's strangely voyeuristic to view, and I've discovered it feels somehow exhibitionist to add to the group too!
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/dvf-woz/4772201359/" title="PaD10 Day 7 by Woz!, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4118/4772201359_14bf84fb63.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="PaD10 Day 7"></a>
Click through to see the tags identifying what's what, as is the trend in that group.
Edit: and yes, this is the crap that I carry with me almost every day (although many days I carry the DSLR instead of the G10 and there's often a harmonica in there too!).

It's something I felt daunted by for a very long time. But I followed most of the free 3 days Zack Arias workshop on Creative Live and it really made me want to play with it more.
So I'm learning. For moving subjects, it's E-TTL and no manual settings though. :help:

Not much time to take photos today and I was really tired. So just snapped this on the way in to work. First contribution from my HTC Desire to the PAD!

Only the best greaseproof paper is good enough for this. Sadly we didn't have any of that, so I used brown baking paper. Just look at all that chrome! I mean duct tape.
And heeere's the result:
PaD10 Day 9 : CBC First Image!

Oh, it's a bit crap!
How it works - you point the CBC at your subject...you totally guess the focus because this is an enlarger lens and in any case, the paper is too thick to allow an image to form in normal daylight. You then point your digital camera at the paper and peep your flash over the top of the box. Set the flash to max powa! Set the flash to zoom as far as it will. Focus on the paper and away you go!
Good eh? Anyone think it'll take off?
Edit: I've been wanting to try something like this for a long time. At some point I will actually get some real ground glass and make a wooden box. I intend to be able to recreate the olde worlde film look, but with digital.
Nice one Woz, just switch the digi cam for some darkroom paper and you'll have a sweet setup;)
