I don't think I could manage a top 5 - let alone a top 40.

My most anticipated albums - the Fall's new one and the Rick Rubin produced Gogol Bordello - both dissapointed.

I thought The Fall one was a gem, they seemed to pull out the stops for Domino.

Bloomin' 'eck, Adge - you really are a serious music-consumer ! :notworthy Are you in the biz ?

I do get most things sent to me to write about (but before I did that I used to buy that much too :-/).

I was writing for the amazing music part of this site (my nonsense here -> http://music.thedigitalfix.co.uk/author/Adrian_Mules/100161 ) until last month. Now I'm doing stuff at TLOBF (new nonsense -> http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/author/amules/ ) and a bit of freelance stuff here and there for the NME etc.

I'm always keen to see what everyone else has got into though, as there always seem to be gems that pass me by.

I've got a heap of 2010 stuff unlistened to but so far this year I've really enjoyed the albums by:

Gil Scott-Heron
Walls
Local Natives
Surfer Blood
Four Tet
Flying Lotus (surprising as I didn't get on with his previous album at all, I really liked this)
Fang Island
Joanna Newsom
Midlake

My most notable albums of the year so far, in no particular order as I find lists pretty tedious as the bet of times, are:

Race Horses
Corinne Bailey Rae
Airbourne
Kids in Glass Houses
James
The School
Nedry
MGMT
Ozzy

Live music is much more visceral and real though. What are your top ten gigs of the year?

SIMON ADEBISI

I likethat Airbourne album too. When i first heard of them i was laughing at how blatantly they seemed to be channeling AC/DC but i really like them now.

You know me, I rarely get out of the iron lung now :help: !

Airbourne have been on my "to investigate" since your coverage.. I've not had much great rock this year so I think I'll pick that one up.

Fav albums of the year so far are:

Marina and the Diamonds
General Fiasco
Plan B

I've struggled to find anything that has really pushed my buttons as yet though, overall I am a bit non plussed by the music industry atm...

Janelle Monáe - The ArchAndroid
Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me
Sleigh Bells - Treats (awesome awesome awesome!)
Beach House - Teen Dream
Charlotte Gainsbourg - IRM
She & Him - Volume II
Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles (II)
Thirteen Senses - Crystal Sounds
LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening
The National - High Violet
Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
Owen Pallett - Heartland

All good albums, out of that, Janelle Monáe and Sleigh Bells are the 2 biggest surprises of the year, but still waiting for the album where I just say "that's it" (a la Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavillion from last year).

Few disappointments, JJ - JJ No 3 (after the excellent No 2) and MGMT - Congratulations (while good album, nothing amazing).

Rather enjoyed Avi Buffalo. Prog rock and Dylan make an interesting combination.

New Wolf Parade is about to be unleashed on Sub Pop too and the good news is they've ditched the proggy sounds of the 2nd record.

LouBarlow
05-06-2010, 17:57
I was the only one in the world who liked the 2nd record. Is Isaac Brock back producing? Spencer Krug is on a roll at the moment, and if the last Sunset Rubdown record is anything to go by, this should be a cracker.

EDIT - seems a bit meh on first run-through.

Right, that probably explains it. I remember buying my copy early this year, but when I went to my CD racks to check on it the date was 2009, but mine is a French copy.

Alkaline Trio's "This Addiction" has by far been the new album I've played the most this year... of other things, the new Karkwa album is very good, as are the 2 Hawksley Workman albums "Meat" & "Milk". Over the past week I've liked what I've heard of the new Hot Hot Heat & Against Me! albums, although it's early days with those two yet.

My top 10 of the year so far would be something like this (in no particular order)

Lone Wolf - The Devil & I
Roky Erickson with Okkervil River - True Love Cast Out All Evil
Jonsi - Go
Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
The Divine Comedy - Bang Goes The Knighthood
Otis Gibbs - Joe Hills Ashes
Tom McRae - Alphabet of Hurricanes
Tunng - And There We Saw Land
fun. - Aim & Ignite
65daysofstatic - We Were Exploding Anyway

For reissues the latest tranch of the Nick Cave ones are stunning. The Dio-era Sabbath are brilliant and little did I know that Dio would sadly pass soon after they were released

I fully expect this to change on numerous occasions

I have absolutely no shame and this makes me "bubble over with musical joy"! :p Even if it does sound like every other autotuned pop record, it's still better than the likes of Kate Nash's total gash! ;)

You're not imagining it, Lou. Kate Nash has one of the most irritating voices ever. She talks/sings like some dowdy Eastenders character. Shame, as she's quite fit. ;)

Such a great great album, was so close to seeing them live, they were playing at the Koko after Owen Pallett, unfortunately their stage time was 1:50am, and Owen Pallett finished at 10:20... which gave me 3 hours 30 minutes to sit on my own getting drunk waiting for them.......

Didn't happen, there's a few really good HD videos of them live on youtube though !

don't get the Delphic love. Their not bad but they are basicly just doing New Order b-sides.

a little unfair. Album grew on me after a few listens and really enjoyed them live at the start of the year

Wavves - King Of The Beach

Not that struck on the first, bit too lo-fi for me. This is a bit more mor in indie hits for me.

MOR meaning it's not so awful sounding.

Looking forward to the new Grinderman album though.

Lovin the riffs, grooves and frantic sounds of Pulled Apart By Horses - first LP. 11 totally killer heavy rockin tracks. This could be rock album of the year for me

Also Janelle Moane - Arch android (sp?)

Not too pleased with MIA's new effort on first few listens, but have a sneaky feeling it might grow on me

Thanks for posting this Adge...

The first track was Bowie/Iggy lite...the second is a somewhat dodgily Cure-esque!

I will stick with it though!

I think part of the licensing is that's it's streaming only with no skipping to tracks, so if you want to hear the end you'll have to play it right through... which is quite annoying but something I have no control over.

Adge

I've worked out how you skip back and forward now... on the player in the bottom grey bar it shows the download progress and you can click within that to jump to wherever you want (as long as it's downloaded that bit).

Finally got into the Chem's Further album, which is surprisingly good.

Their last album that I actually liked from start to finish was Dig Your Own Hole, with every subsequent effort featuring a dwindling number of decent tracks. There's genuinely only one decent track on We Are The Night.

So this is much more consistent, deeper sound, without the cute attempts at pop magic - Do It Again and Salmon Dance are the amongst their most embarrassing misfires. Shame about the "higher higher" lyrics, but it's strong, atmospheric stuff.

Cheers for posting those podcasts. I'll certainly be listening. I used to download a monthly torrent around 2008 with 100ish tracks in it called something like "Various Indie/Pop Playlist" a few years ago. I think the guy was someone who worked in radio and was German. He got banged up for something unrelated and obviously stopped doing them.

P.S. I always pronounced your name as in "badge" not "age". How odd.

You can call me what you want though, most people do!!

I've been a bit off the musical radar of late and haven't really kept up with what's going on but two albums I've been listening to a lot recently are:

John Grant - The Queen of Denmark
Superb solo debut from the ex-Czars frontman. One of the most beautiful male voices I've heard.

Rose Elinor Dougall - Without Why
I quite liked her previous group The Pipettes when they were around but wasn't expecting this. Her debut manages to pull off that rare trick of sounding fresh but nostalgic. It really reminds me of the music I was listening to as a 16 year old in the late 80's. Great stuff!

After a pretty poor start to the year, when I was thinking the outlook for 2010 was grim, things have picked up a bit for me. Barely a handful of truly special albums, but those few are very special.

Crippled Black Phoenix - I, Vigilante. A new one to me, and my favourite album of the year so far. Utterly, utterly gorgeous. Am catching up with their back catalogue to make amends for not having discovered them until now.

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs. Not much gives me greater pleasure than seeing possibly the best band in the world right now actually succeeding by becoming one of the biggest bands in the world right now. How often does that happen?

The National - High Violet

Kristin Hersh - Crooked - This is Kristin at the absolute zenith of her career, solo or otherwise.

Leonard Cohen - Songs From The Road Some of the greatest songs ever written, performed live on his recent tour. Not much new if you bought last year's Live in London CD though.

Johnny Cash - American VI: Ain't No Grave

Kris Kristofferson - Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends: The Demos 1968-72. Already knew and loved all these songs, but many of these he wrote for others, and they sound so much better in his own voice. Especially when stripped down to the raw basics. One of the most underrated singer-songwriters, in my opinion.

Smoke Fairies - Through Low Light And Trees.

Perfume Genius - Learning

Grinderman 2

Tunng - And When We Saw The Land

Shearwater - The Golden Archipelago. their poorest album for a while, but still better than most bands can manage.

And that's my 2010 so far.

Just to second a couple mentioned above - the Kristin album is the best thing she's done in an age and the Rose Elinor Dougall is just a beautiful surprise. Who'd have thought she had that in her ?

Over the past couple of weeks I've been blown away by :

Chief - Modern Rituals

The Sad Death of Liberal England - Drown Your Heart Again

Soars - Soars (For all fans of, ooh, MBV, Slowdive, EITS, Cocteaus)

Heidi Talbot - The Last Star

Superchunk - Shredding Majesty (Back after ten years and their best album by some distance)

Not heard much mention of the new Interpol. Loved 'Lights' so need to catch up with this one.

Nah, Darkness were awful. Foxy Shazam's last LP was way less glam rock.

From what I've heard, they've made dubstep a bit too poppy. Although some might say the same of Burial, who I love.

Theres definately a poppy element to it especially with Katy B and Ms Dynamite appearing on tracks (love the Ms Dynamite track) but there's also some heavier stuff on there.

Well "bubble over with joy" does not sound quite right for this kind of music but I thought that Iron Maiden's latest album The Final Frontier was brilliant, right from the imaginative cover art by Melvyn Grant.

I quite liked Ellie Goulding's album Lights although I would concede it's patchy and doesn't always do justice to her quite different voice. But her cover of Elton John's Your Song for that John Lewis advert is brilliant, really suits her vocals.

This is a superb lineup - one of your best.

Thanks man. It was a bit darker than my normal offering, it seemed to go down really well though - I got a lot of good feedback on that show.

Here's this week's offering, featuring: Pulp, Y Niwl, Lightspeed Champion, Trophy Wife, Girls, Seapony, Daft Punk, Greatest Hits, Slackk. Diamond Rings, D'eon, Cloud Control, Gauntlet Hair, Doug Paisley, The Magnetic Fields, Wooden Wand & Suede.
