Basic Sky to Sky+HD

I have basic sky and the cabling cannot be changed.

I am thinking about what functionaly I will have if I get Sky+HD;
1. Can I just plug in the new box using the one existing cable and get HD (pacakage permitting)?
2. Without a 2nd cable will I be able to use Sky+ at all?
3. What entertainment packages can be gotten rid of due to the HD coverage being good?

you should be able to get HD on one feed no reason why not.

Without the 2nd cable no full Sky+ its possible you may be able to record, but definitely not watch live & record.

I find I cant get rid of any, as the listings & times often differ between standard & HD. But it may work for you. Take a look at your most watched channels & compare the HD channels for listings.

The HD box has a 'single feed' install option.

However there were a lot of issues with the way it was implemented. It may be worth having a look at the digitalspy forums to see if you can find what they were.

edit: Here is one. Not read through it, nor have I searched around to see if Sky resolved it with a software update.

Thanks guys. I had a huge read of things and was all ready to go for it. Spoke to one Sky guy who sai it was a simple box switch out after I mentioned I could not do a 2nd feed. Then I called back to sort it out and someone else states the wiring needs to be changed as the old sky feed cable won't work at all with the box?!? When I said I have a communal dish he said the cable replacement would just be internal from the wall socket. Things is, the socket is behind kitchen units and not accessible. Is this bs or for real?

I cancelled anyway.

Sounds odd. Not up on communal distribution so it may be right but I wouldn't take the person at the end of the phones word as gospel.

No, he was talking total pap as 'was installed' this weekend and they just switched out the boxes and set the new box to single feed.
