Never seen the film, and am wondering which is the best version to buy. I'm not sure I want to see the Redux version first (or at all, for the time being), so it's the original movie I'm after. Not too fussed about extras, just the best quality picture and sound. R1/R2/R4?

The original version was discontinued after the release of the Redux version.
I only managed to get a copy from a recent sale where old stock was sold off.
There's plenty of rumours flying around which suggest that an Apoc Now SE is coming in the 3rd courter of this year.
I'd wait if you can, or try to pick up a copy of the normal version 2nd hand (maybe ebay or a market).
I dont care what Coppola says, the original cinema release is the real version of Apoc Now.
(Its much better too)

I'd Agree - Apocalypse has been my number 1 for 10 years, and I LOVED REDUX, But the definaitive version would be the origional -

Like the man said, a possible special ed on its way - wait for that!

You never know Hearts of Darkness may be included! - probably wishful thinking...

I debated about selling my original DVD after buying Redux, and came to the conclusion I may as well. I've only ever watched the movie twice, and Redux was the second time. Personally Redux was a good expansion of all already great movie, with the new scenes broadening the themes slightly, e.g. French colonialism.

Really hope if an SE does appear that Coppola makes it worth buying. Don't want just any old 2-disc edition. If the likes of LOTR and Pearl Harbor (Vista) can warrant 4-discs, then so can Apocalypse Now. I'd imagine there's plenty of source material to work with, and Coppola isn't exactly overburdened with productions at present to not devote plenty of time to such a project.

I think the SE isn't coming out anytime soon. I prefer the original, but got both for completeness sake :D

Sorry but it wasn't

AN Original was only released back in November UK R2 so it is hardly going to be discontinued now is it.

Personally I'm waiting for the SE.

Actually it was! I believe the rights ran out or something similar?
I'm sure people here will know the full reason
Trustme you'll be lucky to get the *normal* version on R1/R2 DVD now

I see what you are saying RichB, BlackStar reckon all originals have been deleted -

Which seems crazy to me as it was only released a few months ago BUT I seem to be able to get it still on R1.

Released November 2000 on R2 DVD.

Deletetd 31st December 2000.

Paramount rushed to get this out before their rights expired. The rights now belong to (American) Zeotrope, which is the production company founded by Francis Ford Coppola. This may mean that "Hearts of Darkness" gets on there.

Any chance of getting hold of "Hearts of Darkness" has to be worth it - the best film about a film ever and shows 99% of "Making of" fillers on DVDs how it should be - i.e. genuine behind the scenes footage.

Favourite bit: When FFC stands looks on helplessly as all the helicopters he'd borrowed from the Phillipine armed forces take off and leave to fight a real war!!!!!!!!!!!!
