I am a great fan of international cinema and arthouse films, particularly south american and middle eastern films. Are there any of you out there who also enjoy international films?

I would be interested in finding any other forum members who have a like for these genres.

I remember some excellent foreign films shown by Channel Four and BBC 2 in the past. Do any of you remember these films?

I especially like films from:

South America
France
Spain
Italy
Africa
Middle East
China
Korea

Please add your comments on any international films which you may have seen.

You have a fine collection of international films ali.

Are there any other forum mebers who have international and arthouse films.

I want to start a thread which discusses the sheer brilliance and imagination of international cinema.

I would be grateful if other forum members could offer recommendations of films they have seen from countries around the world.

France:
Hard to really pinpoint specific films as there's a tremendous output from there - still I'd recommend anything
by Louis Malle (Lacombe Lucien, Au revoir les enfants etc), Tavernier (Ca commence aujourd'hui and others), Clouzot (Diaboliques, Le corbeau), Rohmer (contes des qautre saisons) and Jeunet (delicatessen, City of lost children, Amélie).
Other great films worth picking up are L'appartement, the three colours trilogy (OK - franco-polish!) and La Haine.

Thing is loads of the big-budget ones are pretty rubbish - Crimson rivers was average but Dobermann, Taxi and the Brotherhood of the Wolf were dreadful(IMHO) so it can give a false impression of the whole... Lots of the best French films get very limited cinema release here (let alone DVD release!) - I'm really hoping that the surprise success film "Se souvenir des belles choses" makes it over here - but I wouldn't be holding my breath. :(

Spain:
All of Almodovar's output is well worth the effort. Bunuel is also worth looking at but really is an acquired taste as is Raul Ruiz (but I think he may be Chilean come to think of it) - there's loads more but can't think of any right now!

Italy:
Nanni Moretti is a favourite of mine - watch for the new release "the Son's room".Also the classics are pretty fascinating to watch (fellini - La Strada, Dolce Vita- and zefferelli are usually sure values)

Anyway, here's my DVD collection (http://www.dvdprofiler.com/mycollection.asp?alias=perfecta) but bear in mind lots of the DVDs I own either don't have english subtitles or aren't even in the DVD profiler database (and I haven't got round to scanning them in)...
