Was just remembering an old DOS game that I used to play, it was most likely a shareware game or freeware, and we're talking pretty damn old here.
It was a level based game that came with a set of 20 or so levels, but also allowed you to create your own. It was a side-on platform view and I think you controlled a mole or worm, as the setting was underground. I think the first level was set on the surface as you went underground and continued to do so from that point on (though I could be getting this confused with Monty Mole, I don't think so though).
I think when creating levels you could place all the enemies and things like conveyor belts etc.
I'm fairly sure it was drawn just using ASCII graphics, much like ZZT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZZT).
Any ideas? Pretty vague I know.
