I just got hold of a Kenwood KRF-V5050D amp today to hook up to my Aiwa DV370 Dvd player.
When I connect them up using a optical Tos-link cable I get no sound or indicator light (for DTS/DD). Using a Co-ax connection works fine. Is there something else I need between the two boxes for optical to work or it just not worth the hassle?

If the DVD player has both type of output then you will need to select which one is being used I would have thought.

The amp will have certain sources set to the optical and coax ins. So I am guessing that the DVD source is set to coax at the minute and thus why that is fine. The manual should tell you how to change the DVD input to Optical 1, Optical 2, Coax 1 etc, etc.

I used to have a 5030 but I never used an optical device until I got the Sony, but that is certainly how that one works. I can set each source (DVD, Tape, Video 1) to any of the analogue or digital ins. It may also have an auto setting where it will poll all the digital ins until it gets a signal.

It appears to be working (I can see the red light shining through the cable at the amp end) but there is no way that I can find in the dvd setup menu to configure the optical out/coax other than DD 5.1/PCM/Stream. Is the red glow always on from the output or could I be missing a vital setting to get it to send the data to the receiver?

I think Just was saying you need to look at the receiver end and not the player.

The player should be outputting a bit stream, it you want DD & DTS, or just DD if thats all the receiver can do.

As receiver's normally have mutiple digital connections on the back, and they 'should' know that people wont all use them for the same devices, they allow you (via the setup menus) to change what input links to what device.

so you could have the 1st optical for DVD, the 2nd for minidisk etc

ie the dvd is sending data, the receiver just aint listening:)

Spot on.

In the setup menu somewhere on the amp, it should allow you to make the link between pressing the DVD button on the amp (or remote) and it 'listening' to the optical 1, optical 2, coax 1 etc physical inputs. The red glow down the optical is a good sign and means that the amp is the likely culprit.

Cool. Will try that. Time to RTFM! :)
