I brought my nephew a 20gig Xbox 360 hard drive from company via Amazon (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=8) and he told me today that when he plugged it in it only showed as being 14gig. I know drives usually show up a little less than full capacity but surely over 25% less isn't right?

It was advertised as a genuine 360 drive although apparently it only came wrapped in plastic in a brown box.

Sounds to me like maybe the company might have put a smaller drive in?

I would have thought not, depends on the formatting and anything else MS pur on there that you cannot see.

14GB sounds about right to me.

That sounds right - about 6gb is used as space for updates, dashboard, system cache & that sort of stuff.

The (horrible) packacing that MS use for their drives is useless once opened, so if it's a used drive it won't be properly packaged.

14 gig is about right once formatted, yes.

I never understood that, where has the 6gb gone, you still have all your normal day to day stuff if you just use a memory card, also how do they justify calling it 20gb. Not sure why i'm worring so much as i've got a 250gb!!

Most of the 6gig is used for the xbox1 emulations - remember all xbox1 games had a HDD and so they all used it for quick data access.

Hate to break it to you, but that's how all hard drives are formatted. There's one separate partition used for cache, system data, drivers, etc.
