I remember playing a PC game around about 1994/1995.
It featured photo/FMV characters along with little FMV dialogue/cutscene sequences in a small box that would appear on the screen. I think it had hand-painted backgrounds and the plot involved you controlling a normal guy who gets sucked in to some sort of superhero story. I think ultimately it turns out that a Superhero who has gone missing and everybody loved had turned bad and was behind some sort of plot to get more powerful.
There was a point where you had to get in to some sort of sleep chamber and maybe there was a dark pool of oil/ooze which somehow healed you.
Sorry it's all a bit vague. I looked through most of the titles here and couldn't see it:

Doesn't sound familiar, but at a guess is it Toonstruck?

No, it wasn't really cartoony in that sense. It was more like realistic noir-ish backdrops...Almost Blade runner esque.
I think it was rated 15 in this country because of some brief nudity. Could have possibly been 1996 at the latest.

The Tex Murphy games were noir-ish and Blade Runner-esque with lots of FMV, but I'm not sure if the plot you described would match up with any of them.

No, no and no.
I guess it had a similar look to Prisoner of Ice. It wasn't controlled in the same manner as the Tex Murphy Games.

No, that had cartoon characters and came out earlier, this was definately 'Digitised' actors in the same vein as Toonstruck.
It was that Eurogamer restrospective that got me wondering what it was.

You might do better to use the game browsing functions on MobyGames, and continually refining your search, eg: DOS games>adventures>1994. I'm having a browse because the game your describing is certainly not one I've played, so let us know if you figure it out!
Another World, perhaps? (But its not point-n-click)

Actually, ignore me. Just read that you had digitised characters.
Damn you, something about this seems really familiar :D
I was thinking Amiga though. Some part of it in a type of carnival setting, lots of black and white?
Is it Noctropolis?

I'm pretty sure it's not Realms Of The Haunting but I'll mention it anyway as I loved that game! Yep, I'm useful... :dork:

It's actually a very detailed premonition of what is going to happen with the Large Hadron Collider :D

I grabbed a stack of old point and click games way back for my GP2X, pretty amazing really how well all the stuff from that period of 90-95 holds up against todays games they look awesome on a handheld as well. Another World on handheld is spectacular, they should really bring both that and Flashback to Live and PSN as they haven't aged one bit.
There were a fair few games which had been made freeware if I recollect, gems like Beneath a Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress, Flight of the Amazon Queen, It Came from the Desert (although thats obviously not P&C). I grabbed a bunch of other stuff from abandonware sites...Darkseed, Dreamweb, Cruise for a Corpse, Curse of Enchantia, Legend of Kyrandia, Crime City etc stuff thats not been on sale for a good 10-15 years and is pretty much impossible to buy now.
I really only use my PSP (:suspect:) for playing 90's point and click games
Yeah I never really fealt comfortable doing anything like that with my PSP. Some of the browser hacks for streaming and low memory messages interested me but out of the box to me the PSP is the most full featured commercial handheld console that I've owned plus with the GP2X all that stuff is opensource so getting it onto the console is as easy as dragging and dropping a file onto your SD card.
