View Full Version : The Pledge
Anybody seen this?
It's out on R2 DVD in April and looks like it could be interesting. Stars Jack Nicholson and is directed by Sean Penn. Read plenty of reviews and it seems to have split opinion into the usual "wonderfully enigmatic" and "boring" camps.
Just wondered what the DVD Times members thought.
Saw it about 6 months ago. I enjoyed this immensely, and the ending makes u think. Very different from the average thriller, and I just wish more films were this clever.

I thought it was a great film. Nicholson is superb, he seems to work so well with Sean Penn. Definitely one of my top five of last year.
I think The Crossing Guard is out around the same time but unfortunately both are bare-bones releases.
Buy it you won't be disappointed.
I was going to say that it depends on it getting voted through the DVD club I run at work as one of April's films, but at £11.99 on Play247, I might just buy it anyway!

Great film - a sublime performance from Nicholson & a steal for 12 quid.
I enjoyed it but the jury's still out...
I thought it was great, & Nicholson deserved an oscar nod, but it's more of a rental than a keeper IMHO.
Well in our club, buying it means you get to watch it free (OK so you pay £65 fees for 6 months) and one of you (total = 8 members) gets to keep it!
There's enough comments here to make me want to see it though. It's not that I'm a JN fan, it just looks a really interesting film. Thanks for the comments.
Another thumbs up from me , though perhaps the end scene was a little bit melodramatic & overcooked in relation to the subtlety/restraint of the rest of the film.
I picked up the VCD in a bulk order from Coolashop - I was gonna watch it tonight... I WILL NOW!

Not everyones cup of tea but I really enjoyed it. Jack is great and I love films where the plot smoulders and builds.
I picked up a copy last year with a view to watching it and trading it on but after watching it I decided to keep it because it's a great film.
A great film, one of the best of last year. If Jack Nicholson can still produce work this good for Sean Penn, why is he such a hammy embarrassment in everything else these days ?

Superb film! No doubt one of the best of 2001.

A good film. Not a great film.
Penn picks great stories for his films, but they tend to lack a large screen vision, his films often come across as good, made for TV films.
Perhaps he needs to co-direct to help bring out his true vision.
