About a month ago I was looking for one more disc to fill my DHL box at Dv-Depot. I eventually decided to get Rushmore CC i've never seen it and and have read rave reviews about the Criterion disc. Unfortunately it was out of stock so I ordered Wes Anderson's first film Bottle Rocket instead.I just watched it a few days ago and both the wife and I didn't like it. She hated it in fact!

So my question is would I actually enjoy Rushmore if I didn't like Bottle Rocket?

I've read a few comparsions between the Coen Brothers and Wes Anderson and I like the Coen's films alot but found Bottle Rocket to be boring, hard to follow and filled with annoying dim witted characters that I couldn't care less about.

I have now seen Rushmore, scroll down for my opinion

I love BR so it's hard for me to say whether you'll like RM, RM has the same very subtle form of humour but the story and characters are very different.

If you can't borrow it from a mate, buy the R2 one from Virgin, watch it then take it back for a refund ;) then if you like it get the CC. Cheeky, yes! But once in a while it's OK!

I think you could well like Rushmore Nathan, it's definitely a better film than BR imo. I really like Bottle Rocket, but thought that the 1st half of the film was slow paced & a lot of the scenes felt improvised, as if Anderson et al new how they were going to finish & end the film, but hadn't written much for the middling scenes?? Maybe it's just me??

Rushmore is just wonderful. Bottle Rocket was quite a small budget film, and although Rushmore was by no means a blockbuster I don't think there is anyone on these forums who didn't like it :D

Treat yourself to the criterion version.

Just remember next time you make a sweeping statement... there's always one :D

Personally, I think watching paint dry would be more enjoyable than watching Rushmore, one of just two films in the last 25 years or so that I gave up on before the end.

Unlike the other film - Terminator 2 if anyone's interested - which I have since seen on a couple of occasions, despite three attempts at watching Rushmore from the start I have never been able to get through it.

Thanks there some interesting comments there. I agree with your comments shingster about the improvised feel to it.

Jroadley your comments convinced me to buy it..........

until Edge popped up. I've traded with Lee a few times and reckon our tastes are very roughly the same and I too gave up on Terminator 2 before the end.

So i'm still undecided but keep those comments coming and i'll let you know what I think of Rushmore and which version I rent/borrow/buy.

I'm a big fan of Rushmore, but I have to say I was disappointed by Bottle Rocket. Rushmore is the superior film in all respects (IMHO of course).

Well I for one can't wait to hear what you think of it as I seem to be the only person on the planet who can't get into this film.

Even the faint hope that there may be another dissenting voice means I may soon be able to start answering those accusations that it must be due to "deep-rooted psychological problems" :D

Though I love Bottle Rocket and positively adore Rushmore - one of the dozen or so greatest movies ever made in my opinion - I can confirm that you're not alone in your puzzlement. 13th Aunt and I showed it to discerning friends and they pooh-poohed it. They didn't like Wings of Desire either. :D

I've said it before and I'll say it again: dance while the records spin. By which I mean - not everyone will connect with art in the same way. No one piece is all pervasive. And while I can think of other films that - especially on these boards - have been almost unanimously praised (Ring, Shaolin Soccer, Suspiria) there is always a dissenting voice. Hurrah for free thought!

I didn't like Suspiria or Shaolin Soccer either. I thought they were both utter pants.

I'm going to order the CC version of Rushmore, the extras look good and i'll have no problem moving it on if I don't like it. I'll post back here next week after i've watched it.

i have the CC of rushmore. I'd give the movie a solid 7 out of 10. Small budget independent style movie. Certainly not the greatest, but the humour is very subtle and i think for some it's a little hard to cope with when they expect a no holds barred comedy. It can be accused of being slow in places, but then that's part and parcel of the pace of the movie.

not seen bottle rocket.

I'm a big fan of both - I loved the intimate feel of Bottle Rocket (probably compounded by the microscopic budget) & the genuine seeming heart of the characters.

Rushmore is top too - not least for Bill Murray's performance. The Criterion is a good disc with some worthwile extras - the funniest being the Max Fischer players take on the big films of 1998.

A little bump for this:
for anyone interested, and no doubt coinciding with the theatrical release of The Royal Tenenbaums, Filmfour are showing Bottle Rocket at 8pm on Sunday 17th.

Just thought i would add my twopennerth

Rushmore had me asleep within 20 minutes which is a record for a film.

On the second viewing i got to 30 minutes before loosing interest.

Steer clear.

Thanks Ed - it's nice to know I'm not alone in finding it a cure for insomnia :)

I implore anybody who likes Wes Anderson's work to go and watch the Royal Tenenbaums as soon as possible.

The writing is great and the acting is sublime.
Why this only got nominated for best original screenplay at the academy awards is beyond me.
Especially criminal is the omission of a nomination for Gene Hackman as Royal. The whole film had me grinning all the way through, right up until the end where, I'm not afaraid to say, I got a little choked up.

Simply one of the most satisfying cinema experiences I've had in a long time.

I haven't forgotten about this thread, my order from DV-Depot is delayed because one of the disc boxes was damaged so i'm waiting for it to come back into stock. I will update as soon as I see it.

Well I've now seen Rushmore and i'd say I straddle the opinions given so far. I thought it was a lot better than Bottle Rocket and am now looking forward to The Royal Tennabaums sp? Hopefully that will be an equal improvement on Rushmore as Rushmore was for Bottle Rocket.

I thought the first 20 minutes were hilarious and very engrossing. There was such great characters. But then it went south for a bit and became incredibly slow moving. It the longest 90 minute film i've ever seen I would've estimated its length at approximately 2.5 hours if I hadn't known. So I still think Bottle Rocket is rubbish but Rushmore is good and I did enjoy it but its not great or the masterpiece some people would have you believe it is.
