Photoshop convert to black and white guide

Before you shoot me down in flames, can anyone recomend me a tried and tested convert to black and white tutorial in photoshop?

I know I could use google, but theirs hundreds.....

Quick, dirty and permanent is just to use desaturate. For something with a bit more control you use layers and hue&saturate. So something like this (http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-editing/black-and-white/desaturate/)

Convert to grayscale and then tweak each channel in the mixer until you are happy. Maybe try an orange or red filter and see how you like the effect.

Loads of methods, doing Image - Calculations and messing with the channels and blend methods can give good results as well.
