View Full Version : Friday Night Lights S5
Not off to a great start with this news (possible spoilers just in case) (http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2010/03/06/friday-night-lights-jesse-plemons-leaving)
No I can sort of see why, last season he was extremely under used for the better or worse I don't know, but he ultimately makes me feel sad for him so perhaps it's best he's not returning :D

At least he got a semi-happy ending, kicking the field goal and making up with Saracen.
Its a damn sight better than most characters end up with on the show.
I'm surprised it coming back for a fifth season tbh. It used to be the best shown on TV imo but dropped off terribly in the last season.
Matt, Tyra, Tim & Jason all back for S5 (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/ustv/news/a227383/friday-night-lights-stars-to-return.html)

Fingers crossed for a happy ending for Riggins.
The final season starts in the US on October 27th....

I'd hate to be a writer on that show.
If the series was continuing you'd introduce a bunch of Fresh characters and storylines, but as it's the last season you're basically stuck following kids who don't even play for the team anymore.
New series now available

Solid first episode of the new season. It's always the little details that stand out for me, like Coach slipping Julie the cash envelope for "emergencies". Though there are tons of family shows out there, the Taylors feel like a real family.
Great start to the season if a little :(, hard to see all the regular characters drop by the wayside but it's a testament to the makers that the new characters have just as much charisma and interest as those they replace.
The Taylor's are the backbone of the community though, without them I think the show would suffer hugely. Gonna be a sad day when this show ends this season - definitely in my top 5 tv shows of all time.

After last seasons semi-success, lets play Friday Nights Bingo!
# Coach Taylor to take in the girl who's name I can't remember that just moved in with the Riggins' as a pseudo-replacement for College bound Julie
# Coach's wife to suffer depression at being unable to help the kids at the new school
# Coach's wife to recover from said depression by finding Tyra II
# Buddy Garrity to die from a heart attack live on air talking about 'dem Lions!'
# Riggins to come out of jail right before the championship game to be able to see his brother make a decisive defensive decision to win the game
# Smash to pop in and say 'Hi!' at some point before the season end
Don't foget that East Dillion will win the state finals this season too ;)
Dammit I didn't even know this had started. How many eps have aired?

Absolutely loved this weeks episode to bits. One of my favourite episodes out of all the series, I think.

Anyone still keeping up with this? Last couple have been good, certainly starting to wrap things up.
Yeah, still loving it although the last episode in particular, it felt like I was watching it on fast-forward as they whizzed through the play-offs.
Sad knowing we now only have TWO episodes left before it's finally all over. :|

Bringing Riggins back seems pointless, and Tammy's storylines this season have been poor.
How 'templated' was that 'bad girl in school' story line...

Is there two left? I thought there was only one more.

I think Riggins coming back will have a pay-off next week[or whenever the last episode is]. I like how we've seen Billy play happy families whilst Tim's in jail, and now that Tim's out rather than the saccharine soaked forgive and forget story you'd get in most TV shows they've got Tim showing resentment to Billy for what he's done. Billy won't get the chance to do anything for Tim to repay him.
13 episodes total
So only 2 left :(

Yeah, I don't think there's any chance at all of me getting through next weeks episode without getting something in my eye.
So ... series finale this week :(
I can't praise S5 highly enough, aside from stories feeling rushed due to the amount of episodes they were granted it's still proven to be one of the best dramatic shows on television. To think we were unsure if there would be a second season let alone end up with five.
I've really enjoyed having some of the older characters come back throughout this last season. I do remember making a comment regarding the end of season three/ beginning of season 4 that it was strange introducing new characters and parts of the town but its a real testament to the writers, actors and directors that I feel the new guys hold their own even against some of the older characters.
After watching the Superbowl this week I couldn't help but picture Coach Taylor on the sidelines. How great it would be to see a second film with Coach Taylor taking a team to the Superbowl.
There's no way they can drop the ball on the final episode, this series is up there as one of my all time favourite TV shows.
Double-length finale apparently? if true.
It's over
A heartfelt and fitting last episode. I'm definitely going to get all five seasons on DVD. I'm genuinely going to miss the characters, especially the Taylors. What a terrific show it has been.
Miss it already :(
The number one thing I looked forward to every week. Good ending although it did feel a bit rushed near the beginning of the episode.

A really fitting finale. Couldn't really have asked for more.
Sorry to see it go. :(
Sad to see it finish but a pitch-perfect finale with everyone (well, apart from the poor dude heading off to the army ) finding themself in a good place in their lives. Loved the final football scene with everyone following the flight of the ball.
Overall, a superb, down-to-earth, incredibly well-acted, beautifully crafted piece of US TV. :notworthy
Sort of show that needed a happy finale, even if it was a tad predictable. It's a shame to lose it now, as these last two seasons, where they've actually embraced the reality of needed to have a revolving door cast have been brilliant. Felt seasons 2/3 really suffered from a desire not to write out characters and failing to develop the newer kids.
Fantastic end to a great series, I had grit in my eye a few times! :) Still not sure about Luke going off to join the army but otherwise I don't think it could have ended any better personally.
I have the whole season to watch as its the sort of show I can't wait a whole week to see. Sounds like I'm in for a treat.
For only the 2nd time, the other being The Wire, a thank you to DVD Forums members for pointing me in the direction of FNL 5 years ago. It's been mine and the missus favourite show over that time and the finale was a very nice happy ending for all.
The most underrated show of all time IMHO
Just seen the finale. How this ends up cancelled when so much other dross keeps going season after season is beyond me.
As Deano says, they definitely drifted a little in S2 and 3, but these past 2 seasons and the first are amongst the best TV I've seen. I always look forward to each new episode and find myself halfway through wishing it has another hour to run as it's usually that good.
This season only suffered for me from being way too short. They had to cram too much in that would have been so much better over another 13 episodes giving each character some decent time to develop their story arcs. That finale did suffer in the middle from way to much schmaltzy relationship resolving happy (ish) ending writing - as it had to given it was the end of the series.
Loved the nod back to previous characters throughout the final few episodes and how I was invested in all of the new characters too.
For a second, I thought it was going to end on the hail mary pass into the endzone at State and I was going "aaaargggghhhh" and then the switch in mid-air to the pass dropping into the Phillly practice, acknowledging the win in the rings and then visiting all of the main characters was fantastic
Clear eyes. Full hearts. Can't lose!

Yeah, feeling the same as others on here - was a cracking end to an awesome series.
Shame there will be no more. . Coach Taylor is a king! :)
I watched the final season over the past week after having it for ages. What a truely brilliant program it is/was. I'm defiantly going to give it a watch from the start again in a couple of weeks.
I haven't bought any full priced DVD boxsets for yonks but i really hope they do something special for the complete series boxset. That's a day one purchase for me.
I'm so glad they knew from the outset that S5 was going to be the last and they were able to write it accordingly and give it a good wrap up.
Complete series dvd set announced for October 4th! Unfortunately it does appear that it's just the 19 discs from the individual season sets in new packaging - "a beautiful book filled with striking photography from the series" Taken from: http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Friday-Night-Lights-The-Complete-Series/15652#ixzz1SDW5ddva.
There's nothing in the press release to indicate any new material either in the form of the DirecTV extended episodes or extras and nothing to indicate an HD release either. I'm guessing the new packaging will be like TheOC and Dawson's Creek complete series "books" in the US? There are no pictures of it yet.

There's a great oral history of Friday Night Lights (http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6766070/clear-eyes-full-hearts-lose) over on Grantland.
Peter Berg has stated that he hopes to do a FNL movie (http://twitter.com/sportsguy33/status/91541071733071872).
Package art for the complete series set is up:

Nice cover.
I hated that girl beside Smash though. Cant even remember her name. Should have put Billy Riggins on there too.
It seems the rumours are true that they plan to continue the story with a MOVIE!
Peter Berg confirmed at the weekend that a script is being worked on, Katims is involved, it will focus on Coach & Tami & feature new & old characters. Shooting beginning sometime next year.

I hope they don't tbh. The ending was perfect and could a film really do all the characters justice?
I really do hope it happens. With FNL the philosophy is more is good.

I though that at the end of S3 when they radically changed characters and settings but for me they pulled it off and I think a movie will be a nice way to bookend everything. I have every faith they'll pull this off.
Sky Atlantic have just picked this up - will start from S1 in 'late February'.
They have the rights to S1 and S2 so far.
Looking forward to this - never had chance to catch it before.

Excellent. Rewatch time :D
Gotten up to the end of S3 on dvd and find it utterly compelling. My fave show currently.
Great news. Sky Atlantic is the perfect channel for this.
