Finally persuaded my neighbour to get a dvd player and he's got £100 burning a hole in his pocket. He wants an all singing and dancing (hackable) player and would prefer to get the cheapest one available. Could anyone point me in the right directions?

He mentioned his mother worked at Asda and that the manager told her that there was a player due to be stocked soon priced £69.99. Does anyone know about this.

Don't know about that but it sounds WAY too cheap and, obviously you don't know that its hackable (yet).

A safe bet ? The DANSAI 852 from Tesco. Hackable,MP3, good picture, goodish sound, as solid as £99 gets you. And silver.

Hearing VERY VERY good reports about the new model LECSON 1000 from debenhams. Not sure about price but is hackable and top notch picture.

Not a great fan of the CYBER ones from WH Smiths, they vary a bit and can develop faults rather too quickly.

What else? The Alba from Argos is ok but not good reports on sound.

Shop around!!!

You get what you pay for and i would recomened anything from the LG range. They are easily hackable and give supurb performance.

lou,
not sure about the quality of the asda player if your lookin for a decent player easy to hack no known problems then take a look at the proline 2000 sound & picture quality are great

I bought a Dansai 852 from Tesco, have had no problems with and happy with the picture and sound quality, a bargain at 99.99.

I did initially buy a Cyberhome from WH Smith as recommended by a prominant magazine, it wouldn't play any DVD's when I got it home, NOT recommended.

Cheers

I have read good reviews too! I think What HiFi have a review of cheaper machines and their 'hackability' etc
The LG gets a glowing review - but it is the most expensive! Might be worth saving the extra!

Good Luck BTW - get your mate to sign a disclaimer so he cannot blame you, in my experience cheap players are a risk. (My Samsung blew up! Got a Sony 525 now - very happy with it, had it over 18months)

Don't forget the dreaded RCE!
