Valve have announced that Portal 2 will be released for Christmas this year, and it will be a standalone product. Awesome!

Was just about to post about the Ars article about the same thing.
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/03/portal-2-is-official-first-image-inside.ars
That story is a follow up to the strange goings on (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/03/valve-mystifies-gamers-with-portal-update.ars) in the original Portal game recently.
Haven't played Portal in ages, but it was a great game.
/wonders if Portal is out for the PS3...?
Portal ispart of the orange box on PS3 and eminently playable, despite the issues with the whole package porting.
Pity Portal 2 is only 360 and PC.

Bah what about EP3 of HL2!, thats what Im waiting on Valve to announce.
Orange Box is worth buying for Portal alone on PS3 :) I am sure I read that Valve were a little sorry with their stance on PS3 and are looking at future game dev on it?
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSS! :)
That's a game that I was happy to buy the extended version of on the 360, despite not long finishing the Orange Box version on the PS3.
One of the things that swung me to picking up a Rock Band game was that Still Alive was available as free DLC for it :D :D

Its the only game I've played on the orange box yet :)
Valve have said they will be looking at PS3 more in the future, but Eurogamer asked Valve what Portal 2 would be on and they said 360 & PC only. Could change, of course - would love it to. Portal was awesome!

Me neither, completely passed me by!
The new ending is here (http://kotaku.com/5485075/valve-updates-portal-again-now-with-new-ending), if you just want to watch it.

Is it a big spoiler?
I LOVED Portal, so am super-excited about Portal2 in theory.

No, it's just a tiny little adjustment to the very end.
Your character gets dragged away by something robotic-sounding that you can't see..
yay, but where the hell is ep3. I really hate it when game developers plan these massive trilogies and then cant be arsed to finish them in a timely fashion.

Never really got into Portal, found it quite frustrating (could be me being thick though). Will have to give it another go someday.
I echo the desire for all Valve resources to be put into Half Life 3 and L4D3 though.
Valve introduced episodic gaming and killed it before Ep2 was even out, just get back to releasing a full game every 3 or 4 years.

My bro gave me HL:The Orange Box for PS3 as a present. He came round to see how it played on the 50" plasma, so I put on Portal cos at the time I had not heard of it. Hence to say, he left when we completed it. We each did a level at a time with a few beers. I would say Portal (1) was the best F(irst) P(erson) S(hooter/But I would say Game) I have ever played. Normally I hate with a passion anything in FPS but this held my interest because the puzzles+story were soo gripping.
I will (probably) find it hard for P2 to compete with that experience.

Whoo, thanks for that, will d/l it when I get in!
If I didn't own Orange Box twice already I'd be logging into steam right now, and Portal being free just makes me want to go home and fire it up again.
Although one of the original Portal team has left Valve I'm pretty sure they can put out a worthy sequel.
Now, I wonder if I've got the Jonathan Coulton end music on my iPod to get me through the day.....

Miracle confirmed? At least Valve are now on board with the PS3. Video does look really good as well. Would love to see them integrate even just a little of the Half-Life story into Portal since it is set in the same time period, if only to see what Glados makes of the Combine.
Only watched the first minute of that E3 gameplay footage but I'm totally sold, sad to say that this is probably the most exciting announcement at E3 for me. I can't wait until this Wii/Kenetic/Move fad is over.

Maybe - the voice is supposed to be one of the staff at Valve and only temporary. However, the people who wrote this article (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/06/portal-2-given-story-british-friend-deeper-game-play.ars) seemed to like it, so who knows whether it'll be replaced.

Some of those moves look so complex - especially the ones where you're flying through the air, portaling as you go multiple times. Hope this isn't too frustrating (read: HARD!)
You had to do that on one of the levels in the first one. As someone who general plays slow paced strategy games I did find that level quite frustrating compared to the rest of the game so I also hope there's not too much of that!

This is out in just one month! I'm very excited, and may break my usual rule of buying everything when it's cheap after some time by ordering advance of the release. The best I've seen for the PS3 is £32.91 at Amazon.co.uk (http://forums.thedigitalfix.co.uk/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=8&url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B004IEA4Q4/thedvdforums-21). Has anyone seen it cheaper?
My most anticipated game of all time...
If you buy it today you can get it from The Hut (http://forums.thedigitalfix.co.uk/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=81&url=http://www.thehut.com/games/platforms/ps3/portal-2/10215566.html?affil=BUYAT) for £30.85 using the code SPRING2. Code expires today though
Or a touch under £30 if you have any Walkers 10% vouchers left.

Somebody from Valve recently said that they found a lot of people got stuck on those later levels because they needed ninja execution skills as well as figuring out the solutions to the puzzles. This being Valve, who learn so well from actual playtesting, I understand that they've designed Portal 2 with avoidance of this problem in mind.

For me, it came down to a choice between the 360 and the PC version because I don't like using the PS3 controller for first person games.
I opted for the 360 version because I enjoyed playing the first game on that system more. I also like 360 achievements more than trophies/whatever Steam offers.
How good are The Hut for release day delivery?
Good question! One of my friends pre-ordered a 360 game and it arrived on release day last week. I had a PC game delivered on release day last month but beyond that I don't really know. I don't tend to worry about release days so I've not paid much attention beyond knowing from my warcraft days that Amazon suck at that. :D

I thought both consoles did. :( I didn't realise it was PS3 only but I see now it is. How about cross platform play? Is that PS3 to Steam only too?
:( I'm told the Hut voucher codes have expired despite various voucher code sites saying they expire at the end of today. Well, it's still worth keeping an eye on them - they have vouchers so often, there's bound to be another before release!
Getting the PS3 version as the code to download the PC version is free with it too. :)So any PS3 owners who don't have a PC want to go halves?

Nah, the games will be tied somehow.
I thought the PS3 version gives you Portal 1 on Steam?
It gives you a free version of Portal 2 for the PC, not Portal 1.
I'm wondering how it'll work. Obviously the PS3 version also uses Steam so will it be a kind of cd key thing like DC Universe where you can't use the disk again after registering it or will it just be a voucher for the PC version (which I don't see happening). Valve aren't exactly stupid so I am sure that they've got it covered. They also have to make the PS3 version playable offline without registering for Steam. Maybe it'll create a local account or something like that.
Part 1 of the tie-in comic is up at IGN:

I think its the pc version that gives you portal1 either for self use or a gift via steam...
The PS3 version gives you the PC version for free, but they are both linked to the same steam account.
If I don't want to play on my PC, is there any benefit in linking my PS3 version to my Steam account? I won't bother if not, and then the one-time code (which is how I presume it's implemented) will be unused if I want to sell up when I'm finished.

You will be able to play with PC & MAC players online from your PS3.

Looks like you will be able to buy the PS3 version, link it to your PC steam account, sell it and get the PC version for free.
GZ: Does that leave the system open to abuse? Let's say I want to pick up the PC version. Are there any measures stopping me from buying the PS3 version, linking the code to my Steam account, immediately selling back the PS3 game to a store and effectively getting a PC copy for next to nothing?
JB: No, I don't think there's anything that would prevent that. We're willing to take the risk that someone might jump through all those hoops to create what we think is a really compelling feature that people are going to like.

Interesting, thanks.
Looks like Portal 2 might be arriving four days early, probably for Steam purchasers:

Reading the interview, if you did that then the code in the box would be spent and so the buyer of your PS3 version wouldn't get it. If the market works (and the buyers are savvy), that would lower the resell value.
Also from that interview: online co-op on the PS3 requires a Steam account but doesn't require linking to your own Steam account with the included code. You can create a "quick" account through the PS3 just for playing online co-op with other PS3 users. That's reassuring.
Portal 3 PS3 to be the most traded-in game in history?

Considering how Valve have snubbed the PS3 in the past, it seems strange that Steam has somehow been integrated into the PS3 version...

Really? I'm not so sure, Valve/Portal/Half-Life have a far more established fanbase on the PC and 360. Seems really weird that the PS3 version is getting extra attention.

I thought it was all done as a bit of leverage against MS to get them to make Live a bit less of a closed garden for devs. At least that's the impression I got when they announced it all.
I believe there are two factors to the seeming change of attitude to the PS3 between Orange Box and Portal 2.
1. When Orange Box came out, Valve didn't have the resources to port it so they outsourced it. That's why PS3 Orange Box has some minor technical problems and no Trophies; Valve added achievements to their own 360 version but didn't want to spend time or money on doing so for the third-party port.
2. Now Valve are big enough to do so they want to support PC, PS3 and 360 (and Mac!). So ideally they want to integrate Steam with all versions. There was talk a while ago of Microsoft not being amenable to that integration on the 360, but Sony being more accommodating (perhaps because they wanted to lure Valve back to the platform). I don't know how much truth there is in the MS story though.
http://www.gamesradar.com/pc/portal-2/news/rumor-portal-2-may-arrive-early-after-glados-hacks-steam/a-20110413155544169033/g-20100308124447849051
One popular theory is that Portal’s GLaDOS has hacked Steam, infecting the Potato Sack titles and forcing an early release of Portal 2. So will Portal 2 release ahead of schedule on April 15? If it does, will the early release be exclusive to Steam users? We expect more clues to surface from the ongoing Potato Sack ARG investigation in the coming days, but we’ll know for sure at 9:00 am on Friday, April 15.
Gutted to find I won't be able to swap between playing on my PS3 downstairs on the TV and upstairs on my PC using the same save game.
Really, what is the point of having a PS3 copy with free PC version if you can't do this.
You can't use the PS3 and Pc simultaneously for co-op in the house either.
It just seems strange to me that your progress can't be shared....

Replying to myself...
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5477-WPJM-9388#ps3codeforpc
The Steam Support site says that linking to your own Steam account is also fine without the one-time code. Having the PS3 game linked with your Steam account is not what enables the PC download: the one-time code does that. That's a subtlety I hadn't previously grasped.
So you can create a new Steam account from the PS3 or link your PSN ID to an existing Steam account, all without using up the code. The code is only used if you want to be able to play Portal 2 on the PC/Mac. So if (like me) you don't own a PC capable of playing modern games, you can still link PSN & Steam without wasting the code.

Well Valve aren't stupid and I am sure they know there's a lot of untapped potential there in bringing the games to PS3. I bet you Gabe still thinks that the PS3 is naff to develop for  They just now have the team to do it. If anything I hope them bringing some Steam functionality to the PS3 puts pressure on MS as that means they can deliver free content to PS3 owners whilst 360 owners will probably have to pay for it.
Doesn't matter to me though as I preordered the PC version on Steam and will be able to play with any PS3 folk from here or on my friends list :)

Valve work on the now legendary Valve time, this is a well known fact. :D Plus perfection takes time ;) I guess we'll find out eventually about the DLC, I hope you're right though.
I doubt Microsoft will allow DLC to be free. In the past, there have been games on Steam that have received free DLC yet were still paid-for on 360. I guess since it's PC, it's not the same thing, but now Steam is on PS3 you never know...PSN doesn't have anywhere near the same restrictions as Xbox Live and we don't know what sort of deal Sony have made with Valve now and for future updates/titles.

I don't think MS honour the "if it's free on PS3 it's free on 360" thing anymore. The Mirror's Edge DLC was free on PSN for ages, not so on 360. Don't know if that freeness was sponsored by someone.

I'm sure that will help continue the relationship between Valve and Microsoft!
Leaked as in I-won't-touch-it online pirate business, or as in street date broken, will be in the post earlier than expected? ('Cause I don't want to have to cancel my weekend away if Portal 2 will be arriving early.)
It's the typical situation where the pirate version hits the internet the weekend before it comes out. I'm sure it was entirely expected by Valve/Microsoft. It usually results from people getting it a few days early in the US from mom and pop shops in various areas.
Just be careful for spoilers and avoid youtube videos for Portal 2 etc.

you just know that the inernet is going to be full of THE CAKE IS A LIE AGAIN for weeks to come. and since Im an old ludite who wants a physical copy I have to wait till next Friday before I can get to play....

Yes but you can install off the disc again without needing to download it. Will help out in the distant future if you want to fire up an old PC, install HL2 on it, crack it and play it.
However, in this case I caved and just Portal 2 on Steam. Was only 23.99 and will be getting it earlier than the physical release.

I'm the opposite way around. I have to have a physical product for my money where possible. Besides which, online retail games sellers are so competitive in the UK that Steam can rarely compete. I paid £22.37 for Portal 2.

Mind you I didn't know at the time that the retail release was after Steams and obviously didn't know the steam release might even be early! But meh, I'm away this weekend anyway!

To be fair this time round you could get Portal 2 for £23.99 if you were buying with a friend, which beats all current retailers. But yep if you were buying just yourself it's more.

I can't help but think that this 'keep games running on your PC continually in order to unlock Portal 2 slightly earlier' isn't exactly the most environmentally friendly of promotions.
I kinda expect a bit of criticism for saying that, but it's still true, no matter how relatively small it is - there's probably going to be tens of thousands of people, if not considerably more, leaving PCs on continually, some overnight etc.

Hopefully any cake is a lie is not in this. was not even funny, at first it was portal reference and turned into a unfunny joke. the people who made the recent castlevania game who just put through it in the game when you picked up scroll telling the last moments of a soldeir. it was like, "my wounds are mortal blah, blah" and at the end it just has the " the cake is a lie" :cuckoo: ******* idiots, was not even in context

it looks a bit better than the 1st game, the source engine is old and a bit ropey looking now compared to the cryengine 3
Looking forward to this as its change from the brain dead military shooters pumped out. Looks like there is some new ideas and also co-op which can more than said for the CoD single player experience. (not aimed at anyone here)

Most FPS manshoots all look the same as each other too. Yet you seem to have played all of the Call of Duty games. I feel comfortable guarenteeing that Portal 2 will introduce more new gameplay mechanics than any new version of CoD has.
The first Portal had a fairly unique look and it'd be silly to change it. But there are lots of new toys and gameplay elements. Plus the first one was ridiculously well written and funny.
Yes, "the cake is a lie" is horribly over-used and it annoys the crap out of me now. But I'd been waiting for the first game since Narbacular Drop. Played it on the day The Orange Box came out while everyone was still getting obsessed over the 'main event' of Episode 2. And that line about the cake being a lie was funny. It made me laugh. The ending song practically had me in stitches with a huge grin on my face.
Of course, I played it and discovered all this stuff before having it shoved down my throat in every other game and internet forum first. If you came at it in the other direction, I imagine it'd be annoying.
It's like when I finally get around to watching Downfall, I'm not going to be able to take *that* scene seriously.
I'm not spending £25 to get it early. Hopefully there are enough nutters out there that will :p
No need to - if you don't already own any of the games just buy one. It's a couple of quid. Cogs is a nice puzzler, The Ball is a bit Portal-esque, Defense Grid is like the ultimate tower defense game

I'm obviously not making my point very well. Portal was a high concept game and totally fresh-feeling, Valve were right to make only a short game out of it. If it were any longer, it would've gotten stale. There's very little variation in the gameplay, it's essentially just room after room with a portal gun. Call of Duty is different (although I'm finally sick to death of it after nearly 8 years), in that it has the freedom to mix things up a bit with new weapons, characters and exotic locations. Portal is a great game just based on sheer cleverness born out of simplicity. As it's a short game, it's elementary style doesn't outstay its welcome.
I really would like to get sucked into the hype for this as I've loved Valve since playing Half-Life back in 1998. There's just nothing I've seen or read about this that has me convinced. There's a good chance I'll be eating my words when I do finally get to play it (hopefully).
You actually finished Portal without being desperate for more GladOS voiced levels? :o

I've not been following the videos etc released in the run-up to the game to avoid spoilers so I'm not sure what about Portal 2 is common knowledge and what isn't, but if you've got any notion that it's the same thing just 2-3 times longer, get rid of it because you're wrong. The basis is the same, yes, but the elements used in the puzzles, plus the scope of the world you're playing in, is massively expanded. And there's co-op too, which from what I've played is superb.
Low expectations are always a good thing, but don't write it off without playing it.

I've mostly been avoiding the hype, but I do know there's at least one new weapon (the gels). And don't forget that half of Portal wasn't actually set in the challenge rooms, there's no reason it couldn't take place anywhere. Frankly I'd be well up for Portal: Vietnam but then that's just me.
Plus there are new characters. There's at least one new AI, even if it is Stephen Merchant.

Looks like it's not going to amount to much, going to bring it forward by about 6-7 hours I reckon. Given that it was going to be originally be released at 4pm, I'll be at work anyway so I couldn't give much of a monkey's!
Well they can't have its release date shifted earlier than Tuesday because otherwise it won't coincide with the bringing online of Skynet. :p

Generally they post so it arrives on the day. Which is slightly annoying as this is the first ever steam game you could actually play early due to the Steam release being earlier than retail!

Well thehut posted mine early this afternoon and they are the same group so would have thought they would all start moving today?
Looks like the Steam release will be sometime early morning 19th in the UK.
Not particularly impressed by the Valve scheme to get it released early - hundreds of thousands of CPU hours, tens of thousands of people spending time on it, probably thousands of 'potato sack' games packs sold on the back of it, and it looks like it'll be only about 9 - 10 hours 'early' (may have been the intention all along).

The DLC is expensive but you in no way need it. If someone wants to pay £5 to wear some robot glasses that's up to them. Personally I wouldn't buy it if it was 5p, but each to their own.
I don't know why they're whinging about it being too short. It took me 6-7 hours and it seemed well paced. Then you've got the co-op on top of that.

its matter of opinion how good the game is, so the reviews can't be wrong - unless you get a cheque for the homefront review ;)
Perhaps the problem is that it is being compared to Portal, and that came as a bonus with episode 2 and tf2 so you can forgive it for being short. As Portal 2 is a full priced game, I was hoping it would be considerably longer. The coop is fun but I won't want to play through it more than once and it very short as well. The single player campaign is 19 levels which is the same as Portal.
Amazing game so far, Valve really hit the ball out of the park with this one. Just oozes class. Of course it's been wrecking my head a good few times as well  Definitely more difficult than the first game. Can't say I've found it that short either but I'm taking my time and just enjoying it.
I am loving this. Plays really well on the PS3 (not installed the Mac copy yet that comes with it). I am sure it will be fairly short, but it is very good fun, and seriously funny. Cannot remember the last time I laughed out loud to a computer game (other than Portal 1).
How the hell did they (developers) miss that?
Well I've been playing for 4 hours now and didn't see that message once, so that's probably why (can only guess fast enough hard drive = don't see message).
Didn't realise we had Day 1 DLC.

It's costumes for co-op. Utterly pointless tat, but I like to see it as selling that to the obsessive/rich fan was why the game was only 23.99 on Steam to start with (as a double pack).

It's a lot longer than Portal. I am really taking my time, but 3.5 hours in and I've only just finished the first of 3 acts. I don't know where you get 19 levels from, fairly sure there were 19 rooms in the first act alone (plus a whole bunch of other bits).
It's at least twice as long as the first game. It stands up well to the Orange Box actually - Portal wasn't a 'bonus', it was a full third of the box with Ep2 and TF2 being the other two thirds - they're about equal in length, except for TF2 which is as long as you want it to be (10 minutes for me). But you get a single player campaign the length of Portal and Ep2 combined, and a multiplayer component. Early reports say that's about twice as long as Portal 1 as well...
Only thing that seems to be missing are the challenge levels that the original Portal had.
My mistake, I finished act one but I was looking at the level cards and it went up to 19 so I assumed that was all the levels like in Portal (excluding the escape part).

Still loving this. I can imagine some people getting annoyed by the humour though, Stephen Merchant must have had a hand in writing his part or at least improv'd a good deal of it because it the humour is definitely his style. I quite like it but can imagine it might drive people a bit mental!
It's a good deal longer but can't say it's going to be too long, I've played about 3.5 hours and I'm on chapter 7 now. Will have the co-op to play after that though :)

It’s the better version out of the consoles, but obviously the PC version is best overall. Depends if you’re interested in ever playing it on PS3 as you get the PC version with it free anyway.

I don't think the article goes into what is actually contained in the DLC that has enraged so many. It's hats. It has absolutely no effect on the game, it's not extra maps, or something that makes the game better in any way. They're just vanity items pure and simple. Just bought this from Tesco Entertainment.... Could not resist any longer. Did any current owners see the SUPER 8 teaser embedded in the game?

Friend told me it was hidden in there but I didn't want to find out about it just yet, will look at it after I've finished the SP campaign.
How much were Tesco selling it for?

£32.70 including next day delivery for the PS3 version. Fingers crossed that I ordered not too late today.....

Tesco Entertainment usually dispatch items from Jersey so 2/3 days for delivery is the norm.
Where did you see it promise next day delivery?

It’s the better version out of the consoles,
technically there isn't much in it but "funny" how value get into bed with the sony and the 360 gets slightly unpolished graphics :suspect:
Only midway through Chapter two so far but loving it already. Merchant does a fantastic job with his character, plenty of chuckles from me. Already missing him though & hope he pops back ASAP.

Just finished it. Still undecided on what I think of the plot, but will say:
Enjoyed the new song, though not a patch on Still Alive. The turret bit just before it was a bit too strange though.
Felt a bit odd having a CGI ending like that in a Valve game.
Have to say though it was overall a very funny game, though I think Wheatley is going to prove really divisive with some people.

Why? I have HDNL deliveries arrive next day from Amazon. You might be lucky.

And I have HDNL deliveries "left in a secure location at the front of the flat". Which in the case of my Wii was the bin cupboard out front. On the day they get emptied. In the run up to Christmas when they were incredibly rare. So that's on a landfill somewhere.
It has happened again on a different delivery but luckily not on bin day, so I managed to dig it out.
Absolute chumps.

So the PS3 version is better than the 360?

My experience is that they're hopeless. Amazon order left in a puddle behind the house, no note. Thankfully it wasn't an easily damaged item. At least this will fit through the door!

I think it's fair to say that all delivery companies have their bad moments, even the mighty Royal Mail! :D
You are not missing anything anyway. It's rubbish.
The above statement is a lie
I overheard our stores department moaning that there are no courier services running either tomorrow or Monday.
Finally, it's here! Although PSN is down so I can't hook it up with Steam -- does anybody know what happens with Steam Achievements if you haven't linked up with an account yet? Will they show up retroactively when I get in to Steam later?
(Plus I'm working, and busy most of the evening. But it's here! That's the main thing.)
Yeah I should think that would happen. Steam achievements also unlock Trophies and vica versa apparently...
Any supermarkets selling it cheap? :o
Game seems the best when trading in motorstorm apoc (£19.99 from morissons) + £5.

Isn't that next working day despatch, rather than delivery?
Alot of people not happy that HMV have shipped it via HDNL. Myself included as I've now got to get time off work so I can be at home to sign for the thing!

Do HMV do this with every game now?
Great game. It's one of those where you get stuck for a while and then it all happens and slots into place.
GLaDOS is one mean biatch

That states next day dispatch though which isn't the same thing, they might send it the next day but delivery could still take 2/3 days.

I was a bit worried too when I saw that but had my copy arrive at lunchtime

God bless Valve because this truly is a brilliantly fun game.
