View Full Version : Manual credit card payment - what happens if the details are wrong?

I have an MBNA credit card and recently made a payment to it from my First Direct Current Account. Unfortunately the reference number was wrong. MBNA have said they will have no way of tracing it if the reference is wrong so advised me to cancel it. Unfortunately it has already left my account.
I am about to contact First Direct but was wondering what the procedure is for this? Am I likely to get the money back?
Thanks.

I once made a bank transfer to incorrect account details that someone had given me and it just came back about a week later because the account details I'd transferred to didn't make sense to the receiving bank.
Don't know about credit card payments for sure though. Would have thought it depends whether the reference you gave made any sense to MBNA though. If not then they would not know whose account to apply it to so would expect them to just return it to FD in a week or so. If it did match someone else's account then presumably you can give them the reference you gave and they'll know exactly where to find the money.

Thanks. I thought it was about a week normally.
The reference was just the last 5 digits of my credit card as opposed to the full 16. Don't know why MBNA are unable to trace that!
