Arch says....Rushmore
But i have high hopes for his next film Bad Santa.
Murray plays a bank robber dressed as Santa with an Elf companion. The films going to be Directed by the Fella who did Ghost World and produced by the Coen Brothers. Which is a match made in cinema heaven for me.
Ghostbusters.

Rushmore or Ghostbusters
Dear Mr Echo

Rushmore, Quick Change, Mad Dog & Glory, Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, Kingpin... take your pick!
Bad Santa sounds good in an 'on paper' kind of way... but very, very good paper :)

I'd say Scrooged or Groundhog Day. In Ghostbusters he was a little too smarmy IMHO. In the other two films he was just a git (well, until the Hollywood ending, of course!)
I prefer Bill Murry as a smartarse and not a git. He plays a brilliant smartarse.

So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one---big hitter, the Lama---long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consiousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.
:D
I haven't seen a movie when Bill Murray wasn't the best thing in it - if I had to choose one then it would probably be Groundhog Day (by the way, I thought he was funnier in Ghostbuster 2 than the first!)
I'd have to say Groundhog Day.

I'd forgotten he was in that. Maybe if we had it on DVD (hint, hint) we'd all be able to appreciate his performance !
I also want to mention his performance in Little Shop of Horrors - a great film IHMO - makes me laugh every time I see it.

Isn't there an SE out later this year too? I'm sure I've seen it a couple of times on various rumour sites. Reitman/Ramis commentary maybe?

OK, Rushmore, Ghostbusters, Wild Things, Stripes, (With the late great John Candy ;) )
He has made some stinkers as well :D
I think his most completely achieved film is "Groundhog Day" which is one of the most perfect romantic comedies ever made. But some of his earlier, messy films, notably "Stripes" have crazy highs that a well made movie like GD doesn't achieve. Some of the early stuff in "Scrooged" has that madness though, as does his wonderful cameo in "Little Shop of Horrors".
As a performer, I thought he was marvellously sleazy in "Wild Things" - now there's an undervalued film !

Got to be Ghostbusters.
Closely followed by Stripes, Groundhog day and Caddyshack.
Rushmore, all the way, haven't like much else he's been in.
Talking of Wes Andersons films, anyone seen the Royal Tenenbaums or know anything of a DVD release, this is probably the film I'm most looking forward to this year.

i guess my vote has to go with Ghostbusters (classic movie as well!). Even though i can see where people are coming from with the "smartarse" thing, i still believe it's a loveable and compassionate smartarse type of role. I love the scenes with Dana (particulary the one by the fountain :) "sorry i haven't met you sir!" )
GroundHog day and Scrooged are also great.
Will soon see Rushmore, and personally, i can't wait! :D
generally speaking, Murray is just a joy to watch. Saturday Night live produced some gooduns didn't it?? !!

i just like the guy full stop.. if i know he's in a film for only a few moments it's a good incentive for me... chist, can't choose , so many good ones... :(
I'm going to steer away from the masses and say...
Groundhog Day, Ghostbusters, Rushmore. Three great films, three great performances. I can't think of another Murray film that hits both spots.

One of my all time favourite comedy scenes from a movie is right at the start of Ghostbusters where Bill is conducting that electroshock test.
He always zaps the poor guy (even when he's right), and never zaps the attractive girl even though she's wrong every time.:D
Ray: Everything was fine with our system until the power grid was shut off by dickless here.
Walter Peck: They caused an explosion!
Mayor: Is this true?
Peter Venkman: Yes, it's true. This man has no dick.

What a choice! I'd have to say Ghostbusters is the best film he stars in, with Groundhog Day close behind.
Best supporting roles: Tootsie ("That is one nutty hospital!"), Little Shop Of Horrors, Caddyshack, Wild Things, Rushmore, Ed Wood
PS - Will someone please release his best Saturday Night Live stuff on DVD? Thanks.
Joe Pasquale, are we the only one's who have seen What About Bob or just the only ones that appreciate it :(

Yeah what about Bob is a brilliant film.
A classic scene, is when the family are upset. "What about Bob, hes never gone, see he's still here." Opens the door to reveal Bob
But Rushmore is a much better film. Bill Murray is superb in it

I think his best role has got to be as 'Arthur Denton' in 'Little Shop of Horrors' ....
I always crack up when I see him in the dentist chair with those things in his mouth, then he says that great line -
"It's your professionalism that I respect!"
Man Who Knew Too Little? Anyone see this. Don't know whether it counts as his best but it has more than it's fair share of Murray classic moments. The only problem is seeing it. Am I right in saying it only exists on Region 1?
It's a fine line between Ghostbusters And Groundhog Day, the Ghostbusters DVD is fantastic but the SE of GHD is lacking features for the title of Special Edition.

1.STRIPES
2.Groundhog Day
3.Ghostbusters
Its a close call between Groundhog Day and Ghostbusters, but Groundhog day just tips it for me.

Much like when Murray visits Dana's house for the first time..
