View Full Version : Joyride - amazing extra!
Do u get annoyed when a DVD boasts alternate endings/ deleted scenes and they are no more than 30 second pointless snippets? Well Joyride turned up on my doorstep this morning (Well done *********) and I had a quick look at the back coverf, before work, and it boasts an alternate ending of an incredible 29 minutes! (almost a third of the film) This is what we want to see more of, film-makers!
Sounds like a good extra.
I was a little disappointed with the Swordfish Alternate endings. Very brief. :(
I read an early review of this which said its like a completely different film in the direction the alternate ending takes. I can't wait to see it once Amazon get around to shipping my copy.

According to all the DVD sites I've looked up, it comes with FOUR alternative endings so maybe that accounts for the 29 minutes. Five endings must be some sort of a record!

Personally I think that the existence of alternate endings suggests that the script / story werent up to scratch in the first place - hence its very difficult to take the writer and director seriously and smacks of amatuerism. These are generally films to be avoided.
Yeah sounds like a good extra. I'm waiting for Joy Ride coming through my door, was posted yesterday from Play. Really looking forward to it.

Well, I don't agree. The fact there are 4 or 5 ending, with one at 29 nins, says to me they had plenty of ideas. Ideas seem to be lacking in many of todays films.

What it actually means, nine times out of ten, is that test audiences or studio head honchos gave the thumbs down to the original ending and a more obviously crowd-pleasing one was shot and substituted in its place. The classic example of this is <I>Fatal Attraction</I>, where the original, far more poignant conclusion was substituted for a crude rip-off of the end of <I>Les Diaboliques</I>.
As for the "amateurism" jibe, the rationale for this could easily be applied to such undoubted cinema masters as Stanley Kubrick and Wong Kar-Wai, both of whom made sweeping changes to their films right up to their release date, and sometimes beyond (<I>The Shining</I> and <I>2001</I>, for instance). You can call Kubrick many things, but "amateurish" isn't one of them - and Wong's <I>In the Mood for Love</I> is my personal favourite film of the last few years, despite its final ending being shot less than a fortnight before its world premiere!

I'd heard about Fatal Attraction's original ending being much better but when I saw it on a VHS release 10 years ago, I thought it was awful!
I was under the impression it ended in a downbeat way, with Glenn Close committing suicide with the knife Michael Douglas has handled (heavily telegraphed in the film). However, after this happens and Douglas has been led away by the cops to be charged with her murder, Anne Archer discovers the tape Glenn Close sent Douglas, the one he listens to in his car with her ranting and sounding like a psycho and she's able to use it to get him off.
It's an incredible anticlimax and destroys all the tension the film has built up. OK, the ending they used is crude but it is effective. Made me jump 10 feet out of my seat when I saw it aged 16!
Not watching it til Sat night, but just checked out specs;
3 feature length commentaries
3 featurettes
Trailer
2 commentaries on deleted scene/endings
Deleted scene 2 and a half mins
Original ending 29 mins
Alt end 1 - 3 and a half mins
End 2 - 5 and a half mins
End 3 - over 8 mins
Well I watced this yesterday, and must say it was one of the best thrillers to co me out of Hollywood in recent years. I thought it was well scripted and it had many twists. The alternate endings were very interesting, but I think they picked the right one. The original ending changes the whole film, and I can see why it was changed.
On the strength of this thread, I've just ordered it!
The crackin trailer was the corkin' trailer was the first hook...
