Okay, I'm really new to this, so bear with me. I've just got a new Philips 28" widescreen TV, and very nice it is too. Anyway I was checking out how different aspect ratios looked on it and played The Mask (1.85:1) and Shrek (1.78:1). When I play The Mask I have no black lines on the screen, when I play Shrek I have black lines on the screen (a few inches actually). I was wondering why this would be as an aspect ratio of 16:9 is approximately 1.78:1 isn't it?
Any help would be gratefully received.

Yup, 16:9 is 1.78:1 (well, 1.7 recurring)

Oddly, all reviews I've seen (I own neither film) detail both titles as 1.85:1 (Shrek at rewind (http://www.dvdcompare.org.uk/comparisons/film_results_page.php?fid=1118) and mask at rewind (http://www.dvdcompare.org.uk/comparisons/film_results_page.php?fid=400)

Hmmmm...

Well both are anamorphic, Mask R2 1.85:1 , Shrek R1 1.78:1 (or so it says on the box and in most reviews I've read). This is driving me nuts - there must be a reason for it, I would have though The Mask would have had black lines, and Shrek none if the indicated aspect ratios are correct.

probably not relevant, but I've a feeling Mask was shot open matte. Oooh. Got all MB on you there. Sorry.

What TV model is it?

1.85:1 will fill your whole widescreen. 2.35:1 will leave you with black bars. Shrek left me with black bars. Go figure.

So I'm not alone then - something weird with Shrek's aspect ratio ?

Well, it wouldn't be the first time a DVD had been mis-labelled or poorly labelled.
Unless the image looks squashed in any way, from what you are saying it sounds like Shrek may actually be 2.35:1.
Some labels use 16:9 to mean the content is anamorphically enhanced for 16:9 TVs, not what the final aspect ratio of the movie is.

Just checked mine ( I have the region 1 copy if that makes any dif' ) def' fills the screen - ratio is given as 1:78:1. I suppose you've reset your dvd player so that it plays for a 16:9 tv and not 4:3? ;)

Yep, dvd player set to 16:9 not 4:3 anymore - will look into this a little further I think.

Do you have the two disc set, because one is widescreen and the other is full screen? I watched most of the film before I realised it was the full screen disc.

Definately using the widescreen disk. I think I'll check out some other disks to see if this is just me being stupid. I thnk I might re-check all my settings as well.
