View Full Version : A magazine wants to use one of my images: Going rates?
I've had an email from an American Outdoor magazine asking if they can use one of my images.
They'll use it at ~2x3" size, and say the going rate for that is $200.. Does that sound about right?
This is a first for me, so I've no idea what to expect. :)

Congratulations!
I am no expert, and have no personal experience, but have recently been gauging the market for prices. If you check out stock photography sites, they often have usage rights calculators, e.g. http://www.fotosearch.com/STK010/jwk1319 . $200 I would say is in the right sort of area according to those (may be smidge low, but 2x3" is fairly small), but I would hang on for someone with personal experience.

Great pic Dno
Also worth thinking about if this is a one off or something you want to start doing more often.
If it is a one-off, and you don't currently fill in a tax return, you will have to start doing one, which is a PITA for just $200. Fair enough if you want to do more stuff like that in future though, but just something to consider. Although the chances of the taxman finding out about a $200 transfer from the US is slim.
Might be worth trading for a few years subscription to the mag instead if the mag is decent :D

Which would also technically require a tax return wouldn't it
Just don't bother declaring it.
:D
what if it was payment in amazon gift vouchers. would also save the bank fees for a cheque or transfer (if mag were willing)
just a thought
On top of the initial magazine, they've now said they'd also like to use it online, and in their two international magazines which go out in Sweden and Brazil..
How does that work with regards to payment? Would the one payment cover any use they like, or would the above case be 4 seperate uses, therefore 4 payments?
I'd ask them, but I'd rather not come across as clueless until I really have to.. :)
Having asked how to proceed, they've said to upload/email the image, and then invoice them for the usage with my details etc. I presume this is the norm?
