View Full Version : The Game Lending thread...
Just wanted to test the water on forum members thoughts on having a 'game lending' thread.
Basically it would be a thread where people can list games that they don't want to sell, but have no intention of playing for quite a while....and give others the chance to play it.
EG: I have GTA4 that I'll never sell, but know I won't play it for a long time yet. Other forum members could request the game and play it for a while and then post it back to me.
My thoughts so far:
1) Games lent out at periods of 1 month at a time...people can request to keep longer if they still haven't completed it within that month.
2) Forum members with less than 1000 posts must have sent out at least 1 game before they can request one.
3) The 1st post in the thread to be used for all activity of games.
Obviously this is an idea that is potentially ripe for abuse and also still in the planning stage (and may well fall flat on its arse at this stage too!) but I'd appreciate any feedback on whether it could be taken any further.

Nice idea, but I guess there's the obvious issue that you lend Andy Smith your GTA4 and when it comes back it's covered in scratches (the problem with games these days)
Apart from postage costs (£1 each time I guess)

A very good point that would indeed have to be thought through first.
Nothing jumps to mind immediately though on how this could be rectified...hence why this thread should be used as a discussion first on the viability of this idea working.

This is the first thing that crossed my mind. Different people have different ideas about the condition of a product. I know in the past (going back a few years) when I last bought anything from the gen.classifieds I had a couple of games arrive with scratches on the discs and when I queried the seller's "excellent/mint condition" claims the response was "well I thought it was the appearance of the case/label that matters, not the condition of the side you never look at" to which I was pretty much stunned tbh, but I'm sure that person isn't alone (happened to me more than once).
I think you'd probably have to go into this expecting the disc to pick up some fingerprints and light scratches along the way for that reason alone.

How about taking a photo of the data side of the discs with your name & date on a piece of paper with the game title also in the photo? You link it in this thread as proof of the condition prior to sending.

I was going to suggest something similar to this. I suppose you could also have a black list for people who treated stuff shoddily.
I think you should limit how many games people can borrow at any one time as well.

I borrow Batman from Statto. I use up my credit and Statto gets a credit. He can then use it to borrow my original MW2 or request Batman back or one from someone else?
You can only have one or two credits at a time (to stop it getting silly).
Is that genius or stupid?

I'd advise that all games are sent in standard cd jewel cases so the packs can't get damaged. I recently got a scratched fame back off a friend but had it fixed by a repair service by post. Looks brand new now.
You could just do the lovefilm thing, and bung the disc in an envelope. You can buy a pack of those plastic disc covers for pennies, from poundland or something, and does anyone really need the box/instructions these days? Then it's only a cost of a first class stamp too.

probably about that complex.
why not sign up for goozex? I've used them for a while, i've swapped about 17 games off (lots of them old pc games or xbox ones) and got about 10 back in return (quite good Wii games and DS games). cost has been about 5euros for 5 trade credits.
you can recommend other people to the site and get free trade credits, so we could all do that to each other. Best of all, you have a much wider range of people to swap with, a feedback system, and a guarantee that you will get your points back if thegame is faulty/doesn't arrive.
Oh and you could swap old stuff (100 points) for new stuff - Batman 800 points.

Hey, I always look after discs! I speak the truth anyway.. The disc will less likely get scratched if sent in a plastic CD/DVD cover! It was just a thought, is all, and would save everyone pennies on P&P.
I do think if anyone is that concerned over a few minor marks to something they shouldn't lend in the first place, as natural wear and tear will likely happen - although of course everyone should be respectful of other people's property. You hear of discs getting slightly marked if someone doesn't even install the game (which again, I always do!).

So you will down on the money front,
Have a badly scratched disc that I don't want back,
And a black mark for ruining my immaculate disc and I can prove it with my photo.

Goozex is great and I've used it for a while now :thumbs:
The difference with this is that you would still get to keep all the games you own, plus get to play others too for just a minimal postage cost. It's just the logistics of it all that would need to be sorted.
I guess slowly building up a 'trust rating' would be a way...I know a few forum members that I'd have no hesitation in sending games to, and have already done in the past.

Funnily enough I was thinking about this the other day as I'll often send discs to my mates to borrow and vice versa. Saves a lot of money and also allows us to play games we may not have otherwise.
Trust is going to be the main hurdle and that likely means excluding some people and therefore becoming an 'exclusive' group. That's perhaps not a good thing. You'd probably be better off doing this with a group of 4-6 people you trust already and keeping it seperate from the forums. Obviously that reduces the choice of games you can borrow but unless you're constantly looking for brand new titles I'm sure most people would have 1 or 2 games you'd play at any one time?
It would more than likely start with a very small group of people, but would grow over time.
Who here is definitely interested in the idea and would participate?

you all agree on 6 games to buy over the next 2-3 months, all ones that will just take a few weeks to complete. So you all pass around the game you bought to the next person after a month.
so the risk is shared. everyone has a similar newish game.

I was just about to suggest a similar thing - need an independent to assess the quality of discs before/after loan. Unfortunately this idea would be a right royal pain in the backside so would become quickly onerous (spl?).
Not that this amounts to wholesale fraudulent activity, but is this sort of thing legal? What stops it escalating into a scheme whereby just one copy of a game is bought by a group and then rotated around? And what then stops the recipients making their own copy before returning the disc? Just thought I'd ask some dumb questions! :dork:

An idea that is a bit more work, but do-able.I certainly wouldn't mind putting the work in...hopefully enough people here have seen from past threads/compos that I'm trustworthy.

You could say the same thing about a disc rented from Blockbuster and passed around a few mates to be played and/or copied.
It's true that publishers wouldn't get any £££ from this, but then they don't from the 2nd hand sales from shops.
Playing a title that you enjoy may even spurr you on to buy the original because you like it so much, or at the very least perk your interest in titles that have passed you by.
Even gamerscore chasers can use it to grab a few more points :D

I'm pretty sure copying a disc from Blockbuster's is illegal though! :lol: I don't know what the rules and regulations are for video shops but I'd have hazarded a guess that they must have special dispensation for renting titles, and not just anyone can set up their own film service without paying the distributors/studios.
However I know what you're getting at. I wasn't trying to stir things up (as I think it's a great idea if it works out!), I was just making sure that it's okay to do this sort of thing without setting ourselves up for a ticking off!

Perfectly legal, where they get into what I consider morally dodgy ground is pushing used copies over new copies thus making themselves a larger chunk of profit and denying the publishers any (yet making good use of their advertising/promotion).

I've never really known this for sure.
I thought it had been mentioned that you never actually OWNED the software, you only paid for the rights to USE it.
Or is that just Applications, or have I just read some fantasy rules bandied around by big software houses ?
With the cost of games second hand (and even some brand new releases) nowadays I prefer to buy, sell and trade.
I know you need some form of gauge, but 1000 posts seems a little steep - prob combine that with length of membership (i.e. see mine).
Following your GTA4 example MrSpeed, if you REALLY want to play the game in the future then sods law says that X would still have it for another 3 weeks so you'd buy another copy anyway!

I assume you'd have to have the thread in the trading forums and check it was okay with the mods (and followed the forum rules). would you expect the mods to ban someone who didn't swap their game on?
I'd be up for this too. Have quite a good stock of old & new 360 games that I don't really want to part with, but wouldn't mind loaning out. :thumbs:

You can't just copy a game and play it on your xbox, first you need a cracked game and second you need a cracked xbox! There is nothing illegal in sharing a game, if you were charging people to borrow it then that would be different.
I checked with Colin before even starting this thread and he said it's ok as long as everyone goes into it knowing the potential risks involved.
There are of course people out there that would probably try and take advantage of something like this, but having said that, there are forum members that would use it as intended too.
The idea might not even get off the ground, but it's worth us finding out a way if it could :thumbs:

I'd give it a go, the only thing with goozex is that you can be waiting a long time for something, so maybe just keeping it in here will be pretty good, particulary with how short a lot of games are these days.
I've started a list in the 1st post of people who have expressed an interest. All that needs adding is what format of games you'd be willing to lend, and also the titles.
This doesn't mean that the idea will go ahead, as we are still testing the water.

Quite fancy the idea. I look after all of my stuff, and I expect people to respect other's items. I always install my games as soon as I get them to reduce scratching etc, so I'd do just the same with anyone else's. I suppose the other question would be how long are people expected to hold on to the games for. RPGs for example would take some time to get through.

I think it should also be for established members or the likes. Unless they can be vouched for in some way.
I wouldn't fancy sending a game to a person with 1 forum post who only just joined the forums, for example.
Moldiver makes a good point about the amount of time - maybe worth trying to swap like for like type of games - for example, I lend Mass Effect to Moldiver, in return he sends me Fallout 3. I know that is never going to be an exact science though.
It's going to have to be very trusting, and the worry is some dispute about the state of a disk will lead to this be short lived. Some of my disks have marks and scratches - mainly ones I've bought used. I do take great care of them and, like Moldover, install games I'm playing.

Aye, you have to be very trusting but that's all part of the gamble here. I will say that if any game I lend out comes back with marks that weren't there prior (they'd have to be serious enough I suppose), I will cease trading with that particular member. As long as they're reasonably well packaged it shouldn't be a problem.
In terms of time limits, I don't think I'll be overly fussed. I'd like a person to enjoy the game to its fullest: some of us like achievement hunting for example, which naturally prolongs its lifespan. I'd trust most regular posters here, and I suppose at the very least you could just stay in private communication to check up on how someone is getting along with the game. Also how about adding the person you've lent the game to to your friends list?
Installing games to reduce wear and tear is a good idea.
Time limit: maybe no specific amount of time, but definitely keeping in touch with whoevers game you have via PM here.
Stating in advance of posting if the disc has any scratches or marks. Though inevitably somebodys definition of 'mint condition' will be different from anothers.

I suppose you have to be reasonable. Most of my discs are in excellent condition I feel, scratch-free, with few having very minor marks. It's understandable that not all discs will look perfect, but you'd certainly notice if any major scratches or marks suddenly appear. It's a good idea to post the condition before lending.
Also I'm happy to send them in the cases they come in, perhaps adding a slip of bubble wrap on top of the disc, in the event that it does rattle. But those cases tend to hold discs very well.
I'm happy to post in original cases too, unless anyone specifically asks otherwise.

I think running something like this will be a nightmare, hence why people run these things as a business, rather than being nice.
Surely its easier for folk who have these games they have gathering dust to just flog them and visit blockbusters or similar? No hassle, and no issues with real people if it goes wrong. Buying one game at £30 will get you six rentals, or 3 months rental online?
I tend to agree with sirp, seems like a lot of hassle involved. It's very easy to get any game you want either by selling one you already have or renting.

thats what i thought, seeing all the issues you have with even something profressionally run like goozex.
I buy games often on the day they come out, and with most of them, you can finish them in a week and then sell them on for what you paid for. Most of them have zero replay value.
So i'd go for more of a "i have all these old games i no longer want but aren't worth the hassle of selling" swap type thread. so its the normal trades you have in the trading forum, but amongst a smaller set? and don';t get them back in the end.
Lets face it, we all have too many games we never play anyway!! i've kept a few games i loved and still i never replay them, too many new things come out to distract me!!

Somethingawful runs that exact same service and it seems fine.
Basically they just make a post saying

And go from there. At the end of the day I think we're all somewhat trustworthy, and obviously you have to be weary of who you allow to participate. As much as I don't like excluding others I wouldn't want to trade with someone who has only 1 post on the forum.
If there is a limit to only borrowing 1 game at a time, and then have to send it back before you can request another, there shouldn't be too much to keep track of...though I could be horribly wrong!
Maybe start it with a maximum of 6 people here and see how it goes?
No worries if it doesn't, was just a thought I had and wanted peoples views on it.

I just see this as a little outlet for well established members who are happy to swap games now and then, who can save a few bob and not sign up to a service they might not use a great deal. It's not doing any great harm being here and people may change their minds later on. The games I'm offering out I don't wish to sell, most are perfectly entertaining ones that I revisit at times.

Actually I really fancy Borderlands, but given it's another RPG style game I shouldn't take on too many at once, and I intended to go for Mass Effect next. Borderlands is a big game - think I'm about 40 or so hours in and I can see the ending coming up soonish, but then I have been doing every side quest I could find.

A 1:1 lend is how it's working out at the moment, but can work other ways too.
Game movement is tracked in the 1st post.
As soon as game is done with, you post it back to its owner.
Doing a 1:1 lend means postage is the same for both parties...£1.65 each way for 1st class recorded.
All the above is how it's started for now, but early days still.

Took my time on it tbh. Didn't play a great deal of it over the past couple of days, plus it's a very short game. That oil refinery level though did my head in. Lost count of how many times I had to restart :D Can't be bothered with MP or the terrorist missions. Cheers

I think it is a fantastic idea, and it would be a shame to lose. I think I've seen a couple of people lending games within the 1000/200 gamerpoint thread, soit does go on.
